Monitoring and assessment of agricultural land degradation is of vital importance for better land and water management planning and reclamation. It requires setting baseline information and basic analysis at specific time and space. About 33 geo-referenced soil sampling spots were selected in two agricultural production locations in the Kingdom of Bahrain to assess the status and preliminary causes of land degradation. Soil samples were taken from 13 sites in Diraz location while 19 samples were taken from Budayyi location. The samples were taken to 90 cm depth at 30 cm intervals. Standard procedures were followed to determine soil physiochemical properties. In addition, field observations on farm condition, distance from the sea, method of irrigation and irrigation water source were taken. Some of the soil samples were deliberately taken from outside the irrigated basins among trees compared with samples taken from inside the actively growing area for comparison. The results indicated that the salinity level was significantly (P 〈 0.001) higher at the 0-30 cm soil depth compared with 30-60 cm or 60-90 cm depths in both locations. The distance from the sea did not show clear correlation with surface soil salinity in Budayyi area compared with Diraz. Both locations showed significantly higher salinity levels on samples taken outside the actively growing areas compared with those taken from within. The effect is more prominent at the 0-30 cm depth. The observed variability on salinity levels may be attributed to farm management practices and deteriorating quality of ground water. Thus, agricultural land degradation in Bahrain cannot be attributed to ground water deterioration alone. The use of tertiary treated sewage water (TSE) may ease the pressure on ground water, but the pH of the TSE should be carefully monitored and managed with proper studies on leaching requirements to avoid further salinity complications. 相似文献

Twelve algal strains representing the classes Cyanophyceae, Prymnesiophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Rhodophyceae, Cryptophyceae,
Chlorophyceae, Xantophyceae and Eustigmatophyceae were selected mainly from the culture collection of the Norwegian Institute
for Water Research (NIVA). The algae were grown as continuous cultures in a 1.8 l. reactor, internally illuminated with an
11 W fluorescent tube. The retention time was adjusted in the range 2–4 days to fit the growth rate of the algae. The growth
responses and fatty acid composition were analysed. The maximum production rate was obtained with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (0.63 g 1−1 day−1) and the lowest with Porphyridium cruentum 0.13 g 1−1 day−1. Arachidonic acid (AA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) were the dominating polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in P. cruentum, while only EPA accumulated in Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was the major PUFA in Isochrysis galbana, while Pavlova sp. had both EPA and DHA. Although the pineapple leaf fibers (PALF) are long known as domestic threading material in Malaysia, they are currently of little use despite being mechanically and environmentally sound. This study evaluated some selected properties of Josapine PALF and PALF-vinyl ester composites as well as the effects of simple abrasive combing and pretreatments on fiber and composite properties. Using PALF vascular bundles extracted from different parts of the leaves did not significantly affect PALF-vinyl ester composite mechanical properties. At low weight fraction and consolidating pressure, PALF fibers regardless of diameters and locations performed equally well in enhancing composite flexural properties under static loading. Finer bundles enhanced PALF-vinyl ester composite toughness indicated by tests at higher speeds. Abrasive combing produces cleaner and finer bundles suitable for reinforcing composites for applications not requiring high toughness. 相似文献

Bacterial black spot disease of mango is caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. mangiferaeindicae (Xcm), which consists of two genotypically and phenotypically distinct groups of strains. Monoclonal antibodies (MABs) were produced – 15 against CFBP 1717, a group I strain, and 9 against CFBP 2919 (yellow-pigmented), a group II strain – and were analyzed for their characteristics. On the avidin-biotin peroxidase complex enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, the dilution limit of the MABs was between 100 and 200000 and was 10 times higher when measured on the corresponding ascitic fluid. All kinds of isotypes were represented among the MABs. All the Japanese Xcm strains, designated group I by hrp-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis, reacted equally with MAB 1A7H12G3, which is the most specific for all but one worldwide group I strains, and to only one strain among group II. Also, to various extents, serological heterogeneity inside the two groups was consistently differentiated based on isozyme and RFLP analyses. MAB 1E2E1 against CFBP2919, because of its narrow specificity, and MAB 1A7H12G3 against CFBP1717, because of its broad specificity, will be useful for epidemiological studies or general control of the pathogen. 相似文献

The use of soil fumigants and fungicides to control soilborne pathogens is reduced due to awareness of their negative drawbacks. Long-term application of such agrochemicals negatively affects soil microbiota and reduces natural soil suppressiveness. We investigated long-term impacts of biochar and not-pyrogenic organic amendment (OAs: manure, alfalfa straw and glucose), on disease suppression compared with conventional management in three pathosystems: Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lactucae (FOL)–lettuce, Rhizoctonia solani–tomato and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum–lettuce, by conditioning soil for 2 years. Soil analyses included pH, electrical conductivity, organic carbon, total nitrogen, C:N ratio, N-NO3−, N-NH4+, cation exchange capacity, available phosphorus, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+, fluorescein diacetate (FDA), and total and active limestone. Soil microbiota was characterized by combining BIOLOG EcoPlates with next-generation sequencing of 16S and 18S rRNA genes. Soil amended with OAs generally suppressed disease by S. sclerotiorum and FOL compared to fumigants and synthetic fertilizers. However, the incidence of R. solani infection was lower in soil treated with synthetic fertilizers than soil amended with OAs. EC, pH, C:N, N-NO3−, N-NH4+, FDA and BIOLOG were significantly correlated with disease, depending on pathosystem. Bacterial richness and diversity, presence of some genera like Acidobacteria, Chloracidobacteria, Solibacteres, Anaerolineae, Nitrospira and Deltaproteobacteria were negatively related to disease incidence of FOL and S. sclerotiorum, whereas damping-off caused by R. solani was negatively affected by the presence of Flavobacterium and Chitinofagha. Therefore, we concluded that long-term application of OAs can effectively improve soil suppressiveness and reduce disease incidence against root pathogens, although the effects vary considerably depending upon pathosystem. 相似文献

Corynespora leaf disease poses a serious threat to rubber cultivation because infected leaves develop necrotic lesions and
abscise, leaving the tree unproductive. The destructiveness of Corynespora cassiicola has been largely attributed to cassiicolin, a protein toxin secreted by the fungus. Recombinant antibody technology offers
hope to curtail the disease whereby single-chain variable fragments (scFv) specific to cassiicolin could bind and deactivate
the toxin in genetically modified rubber trees that harbour the antibody gene. A scFv phage library was constructed from heavy
and light variable chains of IgG from cassiicolin immunized Balb/C mice spleen. Biopanning of the phage library yielded a
scFv clone with high specificity to cassiicolin. The nucleotide sequence and deduced amino acid sequence information of the
scFv were obtained. Hemagglutinin (HA)-tagged scFv expressed in Escherichia coli is discerned as a band at ca. 30 kDa on SDS-PAGE, and the corresponding band was detected by anti-HA IgG on a Western immunoblot.
Deactivation of cassiicolin by the affinity-purified scFv was demonstrated in a detached-leaf bio-assay on selected susceptible
Hevea clones (PB 260, RRIM 2020, RRIM 901 and RRIM 929). The assay was also performed on clones that are relatively more resistant
to the fungus (RRIM 600 and GT-1), and the results were as expected. Thus, we have successfully demonstrated that the cassicolin-specific

Polypyrrole (PPy) film was prepared via in-situ chemical polymerization of pyrrole monomer on the surface of red-clay-brick (RCB) substrate. The deposited PPy film was characterized and used as an adsorbent for removal of benzene polycarboxylic acids from aqueous solutions. The effects of solution pH, contact time, initial concentration, and temperature on the adsorption process were systematically investigated to find the optimum operating conditions. Adsorption kinetic data were best fitted by pseudo-second order kinetic model. The adsorption equilibrium data were most represented by the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption amounts of Trimellitic, Hemimellitic, and Pyromellitic acids were 189.27, 177.26, and 203.31 mg/g, respectively. The thermodynamic studies indicate that the adsorption was an endothermic and spontaneous process. Also, the PPy-RCB film was successfully regenerated using sodium hydroxide solution. The regenerated PPy-RCB can be reused for more than four successive cycles with a low reduction in adsorption efficiency. 相似文献
