Measurement of total acid deposition into spruce and beech forests in Northrhine-Westfalia During one year the deposition of H+, NH4+, Al3+, Fe3+ and the acidity (BNC8,2) in bulk precipitation and throughfall of spruce and beech stands was measured in Northrhine-Westfalia. It is shown that the calculation of acid deposition as the sum of the H+-equivalents of (H+ + NH4+ + Al3+ + Fe3+ + Mn2+) underestimates total deposition of acidity. A simple and useful alternative is the calculation of H+-equivalents from (BNC8,2 + 0.9 NH4+ + Mn2+).  相似文献

A new method for copper impregnation of wood in structures was suggested and tested in laboratory scale with specimen of new pine sapwood. A copper nail and a steel screw were placed in the wood, and an electric direct current field was applied, so the copper nail was anode and the screw was cathode. At the anode, copper ions were generated. The copper ions were transported into the wood by electromigration (movement of ions in an applied electric field) towards the cathode, and a volume between the two electrodes was thereby impregnated. Copper also moved to a lesser degree in the opposite direction, probably due to capillary effects, and a smaller volume behind the anode was impregnated as well. The impregnation perpendicular to the grain was limited compared to the one along the grain. The highest Cu concentrations were obtained close to the anode.  相似文献

A voltage-dependent chloride current has been found in early ascidian embryos that is a minor conductance in the oocyte and in interphase blastomeres but that increases transiently in amplitude by more than tenfold during each cell division. Repeated cycles in the density of this chloride current could be recorded for up to 6 hours (four cycles) in cleavage-arrested embryos, whether they were activated by sperm or calcium ionophore. These data suggest that there is a direct link between the cell cycle clock and the properties of this channel, a link that results in pronounced cyclical changes in the electrical properties of early blastomeres.  相似文献

Knowledge of the individual lipid species that are associated with ethanol tolerance in Saccharomyces cerevisiae is necessary to understand potential mechanisms of how this organism uses these molecules to mitigate the toxic effects of ethanol. Three industrial yeast strains with varying degrees of ethanol tolerance were examined utilizing normal phase high-performance liquid chromatography and atmospheric pressure ionization-ion-trap mass spectrometry methods to quantitatively determine phospholipid and ergosterol levels at numerous fermentation time points. Both high and low Brix fermentations were performed to assess the sugar utilization capabilities of the strains. The results indicated that the strain with the most robust fermentation characteristics had the highest phosphatidylinositol levels and lowest phosphatidylcholine levels. Examination of the phospholipid structural data from tandem MS experiments indicated that the levels of several phospholipid species were unique to the slowest fermenting strain. The relation of ergosterol and other phospholipids to ethanol tolerance is also discussed.  相似文献

Optical observations, in which a microscope was used with the diamond-anvil pressure cell, were carried out on benzene, naphthalene, and anthracene up to temperatures of about 600 degrees C and pressures of approximately 40 kilobars. New high-pressure phases of benzene (benzene III) and anthracene (anthracene II) were observed, and the existence of the high-pressure polymorph, naphthalene II, was verified. All three materials decompose initially to a reddish-orange liquid, and ultimately to amorphous carbon. The decomposition temperatures decrease with increasing molecular size.  相似文献

The current study examined the effects of inclusion of flaxseed in a red clover silage diet on growth, carcass quality, adipose tissue and muscle fatty acid (FA) profiles of beef steers. Twelve British×Continental crossbred steers (363±26.5 kg) were randomly assigned to two pens and fed diets containing 70% red clover silage, 15% steam rolled barley/vitamin–mineral supplement and either additional 15% steam rolled barley or 15% triple rolled flaxseed (all DM basis) for 215 d. Diet had no effect (P>0.05) on average daily gain or carcass quality atributes. Overall, FA profiles in all tissues followed similar trends when flaxseed was added to the diet but intramuscular fat had the highest proportions of n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) while subcutaneous fat had largest proportions of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) and perirenal fat had the highest proportions of trans-18:1 isomers, particularly vaccenic acid (VA). Feeding flaxseed increased (P<0.05) percentages of α-linolenic acid (ALA; 1.1–1.6% of total FA), total n-3 PUFA, conjugated linolenic acids, non-conjugated linoleic acids (mostly t11,c15-18:2), and led to unprecedented increases in CLA (mainly rumenic acid, RA; 1.1–2.9%), and trans-18:1 isomers (chiefly VA; 5.9–9.5%) in muscle and adipose tissues. Flaxseed also reduced individual and total n-6 PUFA, cis-monounsaturated FA, branched-chain FA and saturated FA (mainly 16:0) in beef lipids. Overall, feeding flaxseed in a red clover silage diet enhanced the levels of FA with a positive health image (ALA, 2-fold; RA, 3 to 4-fold and VA, 4 to 5-fold) and reduced the levels of less desirable FA (n-6 PUFA; 14:0, 16:0) in muscle and adipose tissues without adverse effects on growth and carcass quality. Differences in tissue FA composition were also noted, and high levels of VA in perirenal fat in particular have potential for use in testing for health effects and development of value added beef and other food products.  相似文献

Alterations in the environment of the preimplantation embryo can affect competence to establish pregnancy and phenotype of resultant calves. In this study, the bovine embryo produced in vitro was used to evaluate postnatal programming actions of the embryokine colony-stimulating factor 2 (CSF2) and serum, which is a common additive of culture media. Oocytes were collected by ovum pick up from Brahman donors and fertilized with semen from Brahman bulls. Embryos were randomly assigned to one of the three treatments: vehicle, CSF2 10 ng/mL, or 1% (v/v) serum. Treatments were added to the culture medium from day 5 to 7 after fertilization. Blastocysts were harvested on day 7 and transferred into crossbred recipients. Postnatal body growth and Longissimus dorsi muscle characteristics of the resultant calves were measured. The percent of cleaved embryos becoming blastocysts was increased by serum and, to a lesser extent, CSF2. Treatment did not affect survival after embryo transfer but gestation length was shortest for pregnancies established with serum-treated embryos. Treatment did not significantly affect postnatal body weight or growth. At 3 mo of age, CSF2 calves had lower fat content in the Longissimus dorsi muscle and less subcutaneous fat over the muscle than vehicle calves. There was a tendency for cross-sectional area of the muscle to be smaller for serum calves than vehicle calves. Results confirm the importance of the preimplantation period as a window to modulate postnatal phenotype of resultant calves. In particular, CSF2 exerted actions during the preimplantation period to program characteristics of accumulation of intramuscular and subcutaneous fat of resultant calves. The use of a low serum concentration in culture medium from day 5 to 7 of development can increase the yield of transferrable embryos without causing serious negative consequences for the offspring.  相似文献

Distance sampling is a survey technique for estimating the abundance or density of wild animal populations. Detection probabilities of animals inherently differ by species, age class, habitats, or sex. By incorporating the change in an observer’s ability to detect a particular class of animals as a function of distance, distance sampling leads to density estimates that are comparable across different species, ages, habitats, sexes, and so on. Increasing interest in evaluating the effects of management practices on animal populations in an experimental context has led to a need for suitable methods of analyzing distance sampling data. We outline a two-stage approach for analyzing distance sampling data from designed experiments, in which a two-step bootstrap is used to quantify precision and identify treatment effects. We illustrate this approach using data from a before—after control-impact experiment designed to assess the effects of large-scale prescribed fire treatments on bird densities in ponderosa pine forests of the southwestern United States.  相似文献

The development of electrophysiological properties of isolated, identified ascidian blastomeres was followed from the fertilized egg to the neurula, and the stage at which cells of different lineages first express different functional ion channel populations was determined. Little has been known about such events because of the difficulties of making voltage-clamp recordings from small embryonic cells and of identifying their developmental fates in dissociated preparations. The problem of small cell size was circumvented by using the whole-cell patch clamp, and identification was facilitated by the use of a species of ascidian, Boltenia villosa, in which endogenous pigment marks cells of specific developmental fates. Within approximately 3 hours after gastrulation, muscle-lineage blastomeres in these embryos developed a voltage-dependent calcium current while surrounding blastomeres of other lineages did not. At about the same time, all cells developed delayed outward potassium currents and lost the inwardly rectifying potassium currents present at earlier stages.  相似文献
