Stability of retrieved memory: inverse correlation with trace dominance

In memory consolidation, the memory trace stabilizes and becomes resistant to certain amnesic agents. The textbook account is that for any memorized item, consolidation starts and ends just once. However, evidence has accumulated that upon activation in retrieval, the trace may reconsolidate. Whereas some authors reported transient renewed susceptibility of retrieved memories to consolidation blockers, others could not detect it. Here, we report that in both conditioned taste aversion in the rat and fear conditioning in the medaka fish, the stability of retrieved memory is inversely correlated with the control of behavior by that memory. This result may explain some conflicting findings on reconsolidation of activated memories.     

Medulloblastoma growth inhibition by hedgehog pathway blockade

Constitutive Hedgehog (Hh) pathway activity is associated with initiation of neoplasia, but its role in the continued growth of established tumors is unclear. Here, we investigate the therapeutic efficacy of the Hh pathway antagonist cyclopamine in preclinical models of medulloblastoma, the most common malignant brain tumor in children. Cyclopamine treatment of murine medulloblastoma cells blocked proliferation in vitro and induced changes in gene expression consistent with initiation of neuronal differentiation and loss of neuronal stem cell-like character. This compound also caused regression of murine tumor allografts in vivo and induced rapid death of cells from freshly resected human medulloblastomas, but not from other brain tumors, thus establishing a specific role for Hh pathway activity in medulloblastoma growth.     

Memory extinction, learning anew, and learning the new: dissociations in the molecular machinery of learning in cortex

The rat insular cortex (IC) subserves the memory of conditioned taste aversion (CTA), in which a taste is associated with malaise. When the conditioned taste is unfamiliar, formation of long-term CTA memory depends on muscarinic and beta-adrenergic receptors, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and protein synthesis. We show that extinction of CTA memory is also dependent on protein synthesis and beta-adrenergic receptors in the IC, but independent of muscarinic receptors and MAPK. This resembles the molecular signature of the formation of long-term memory of CTA to a familiar taste. Thus, memory extinction shares molecular mechanisms with learning, but the mechanisms of learning anew differ from those of learning the new.     

Seasonal acclimatisation in the hen

1. The oxygen consumption and body temperature of White Leghorn x Rhode Island Red laying hens, which were being kept in a semi-natural climate, were periodically measured for short periods at ambient temperatures between 2 and 32 degrees C in a suitable chamber. 2. A seasonal shift was observed in lower critical temperature (Tc) and thermoneutral oxygen consumption. The slope of the relationship between oxygen consumption and air temperature at less than Tc was not discernibly affected by season. 3. The seasonal shifts correlated best with mean daily outside temperature Ta) during the experimental periods; a seasonal decrease of 10 degrees C in Ta was associated with a decrease of 8.5 degrees C in Tc and a 12% increase in thermoneutral oxygen consumption. 4. The capacity to maintain body temperature stability at extremes of environmental temperature was improved by acclimatisation to heat.     

Agents of Psittacosis-Lymphogranuloma Venereum Group Isolated from Muskrats and Snowshoe Hares in Saskatchewan

Agents lethal to chicken embryos and mice were isolated from the blood and spleen of 2 muskrats and 2 snowshoe hares which died during the cataclysmic die-off of 1961 in Central Saskatchewan. The 4 isolates are probably identical. One of them was identified as a member of the psittacosis-lymphogranuloma venereum (PLV) group of organisms on the basis of morphological and tinctorial properties and on the possession of group specific antigens. Application of the method of specificity differences permitted its serotype differentiation.     

江西银杏叶黄酮类化合物含量及变化规律研究(Ⅰ)

用分光光度法测定了从江西各地引种到江西农业大学的银杏其叶不同季节的黄酮类化合物含量,结果表明：不同种源的银杏叶黄酮含量差异较大;不同季节含量也有差异,以１０月份为最高。     

Equine amnionitis and fetal loss: The case definition for an unrecognised cause of abortion in mares

A series of abortions occurred in mares in New South Wales during 2004 that involved similar and unusual findings on post mortem examination of aborted fetuses and fetal membranes. The term Equine Amnionitis and Fetal Loss (EAFL) was developed to describe the condition. This form of abortion had not been previously recognised in Australia. The pathology alone is not specific for EAFL and diagnosis requires demonstration of a combination of certain pathological and bacteriological features. The purpose of this paper is to describe patterns considered consistent with EAFL cases as a working case definition for use by veterinarians and veterinary pathologists in identifying future cases of EAFL. More detailed papers are in preparation to fully describe the epidemiological, histopathological, and microbiological aspects of EAFL.
