Surface water in the North Equatorial Current (NEC) is composed of southern low‐salinity water diluted by precipitation to less than 34.2 psu and northern, high‐salinity tropical water greater than 34.8 psu. Analyses of 27‐year historical data, observed in winter and summer along the longitude 137°E by the Japan Meteorological Agency, shows that an obvious salinity front (34.5 psu) generated by the two water masses was usually located around 15°N. However, the salinity front has been moving northward during the past three decades. El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) affected salinity in the surface layer, while temperature changed in the middle layer. The salinity front sometimes moved southward, mainly south of 5°N, and the movement was well correlated with the southern oscillation index (SOI). Because precipitation at Yap (9.5°N, 138.1°E) fluctuated with SOI, this spike‐like southward movement of the salinity front was probably affected by reduction of low‐salinity water during El Niño in the north‐western Pacific Ocean. However, ENSO only induced such large southward movements of the salinity front when the time lag between the low precipitation and low SOI was short (within four months). This salinity front is quite important for long‐distance migrating fish such as the Japanese eel because the eels spawn just south of the salinity front in the NEC. This behaviour suggests that the movement of the salinity front associated with ENSO may control the success of larval transport from the spawning ground in the NEC to the nursery ground in East Asia. In fact, catch of the Japanese eel larvae in Japan was well correlated with fluctuation of SOI and the location of the salinity front, and lower catch occurred during El Niño. The salinity front has moved from 13°N to 17°N during the past three decades. Considering that conditions of larval transport are worse north of 15°N, we suggest that decadal‐scale linear decrease of glass eel catch during the past three decades also can be explained by the displacement of the salinity front.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to clarify the effects of astaxanthin‐enriched yeast on the concentration of immunoglobulin A (IgA), the numbers of IgA antibody‐secreting cells (ASC) and the messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of IgA C‐region in the jejunum and ileum of weanling mice. Weanling mice were fed rodent feed or astaxanthin‐enriched yeast‐supplemented rodent feed for 7, 14 or 21 days. Supplemental astaxanthin‐enriched yeast increased the numbers of IgA ASC in the jejunum and ileum after 7, 14 and 21 days of treatment. Supplemental astaxanthin‐enriched yeast increased IgA concentrations in the jejunum after 21 days of treatment, but IgA concentrations in the ileum were not affected by the treatment. The mRNA expressions of IgA C‐region in the jejunum after 14 and 21 days of treatment and the ileum after 14 days of treatment were enhanced by supplementation of astaxanthin‐enriched yeast. These results indicate that supplementation of astaxanthin‐enriched yeast is effective to enhance the numbers of IgA ASC in the jejunum and ileum and IgA concentrations in the ileum of weanling mice.  相似文献

Thirty‐one ICR pregnant mice were assigned to a control or a potassium chloride (KCl) diet group to clarify the effects of KCl supplementation on water intake, bodyweight gains and serum components in pregnant and lactating mice, and 5% KCl was supplemented in KCl diets from 6.5 days post coitus to 1 or 14 days after parturition. Feed intake was not affected by treatment, but supplemental KCl decreased bodyweight gains of lactating mice and their neonatal mice. Water intake and urine volume of KCl supplemented mice were significantly higher than those of control mice during pregnancy and supplemental KCl decreased serum urea N in pregnant mice. Supplemental KCl increased water intake drastically in lactating mice immediately after parturition and increased serum K at 14 days after parturition. Histological alteration using hematoxylin–eosin was not found in the kidney of each mouse at 1 or 14 days after parturition. These results indicate that high KCl supplementation accelerates water intake in lactating mice and prevents bodyweight gains of maternal and neonatal mice during lactation.  相似文献

To generate drought-tolerant sugarcane, we obtained hybrid lines by the intergeneric hybridization of a Saccharum spp. hybrid with Erianthus arundinaceus. A test using 5S rDNA as a marker identified five intergeneric hybrid lines with a production efficiency of approximately 3 %. There was difficulty in maintaining these hybrid lines because they were weak, and one line only survived. We examined the amount of roots and polyphenol content of the roots, which are related to drought tolerance, in the surviving line. Although the shoot–root ratio, an indicator of the amount of roots, was high in sugarcane and low in E. arundinaceus, the shoot–root ratio of the hybrid line was intermediate between those of the parents. Regarding the polyphenol content of the roots, only the surface of a root sample was stained by NaNO3 in sugarcane, whereas the entire cross section of a root sample was stained in E. arundinaceus. For the hybrid line, the entire cross section of the root was faintly stained. From these results, we concluded that the roots characteristics were introduced by the intergeneric hybridization between a Saccharum spp. hybrid and E. arundinaceus.  相似文献

Friction that arises during processing for the deformation of wood under relatively high pressure levels (ca. >1 MPa) is an important factor to be taken into account when wood is processed. However, few studies on such friction have been published. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the influence of surface finishing conditions on the nominal friction coefficient (μ) of the wood and metal tool surfaces. Sticking friction was likely to arise on a relatively coarse metal surface, and the type of metal tool surface finishing was found to have large impact on the friction mechanism. The friction characteristics during exposure to high pressure seem to be affected not only by the interface contact characteristics, but also by the deformation characteristics of wood during compressive load or measurement. The value of μ on water-saturated wood was equal or higher than that on dry wood, which suggests that the contact characteristics between these two types of wood are significantly different. The water content in wood was shown to affect both the interface contact and deformation characteristics of wood. The value of μ was not significantly affected by the wood surface finishing conditions; however, changes in μ during sliding differed slightly, depending on the finishing conditions.  相似文献

Nitric oxide reductase (NOR) is an iron-containing enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of nitric oxide (NO) to generate a major greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide (N(2)O). Here, we report the crystal structure of NOR from Pseudomonas aeruginosa at 2.7 angstrom resolution. The structure reveals details of the catalytic binuclear center. The non-heme iron (Fe(B)) is coordinated by three His and one Glu ligands, but a His-Tyr covalent linkage common in cytochrome oxidases (COX) is absent. This structural characteristic is crucial for NOR reaction. Although the overall structure of NOR is closely related to COX, neither the D- nor K-proton pathway, which connect the COX active center to the intracellular space, was observed. Protons required for the NOR reaction are probably provided from the extracellular side.  相似文献

In this study the thermoplastic flow behavior of steamed wood flour was investigated. First it was demonstrated that steamed Japanese beech flour flowed out of the nozzle under compression at high temperature in a thermal flow test with a capillary rheometer. The effects of the steaming temperature, steaming time, compressive pressure, and moisture content of wood flour on the thermal flow temperature were examined. It was shown that the higher the steaming temperature and compressive pressure, the lower the thermal flow temperature. Also, the thermal flow temperature of the sample steamed at 200°C for 20 min became lowest and increasingly higher over time. Furthermore, the thermal flow temperature became linearly low with increasing moisture content of the sample under 15%, whereas it became essentially constant over 15%. It is clarified that compressive pressure and moisture content as well as the steaming conditions profoundly affect the thermoplastic flow behavior of steamed wood flour.  相似文献

The inverse solution procedure that enables the identification of the defect position in a beam from the resonance frequency was exploited. Resonance frequency shifts of a power spectrum due to defects in a longitudinally vibrating beam when both ends are free were investigated by both numerical and experimental analysis. Calculation by a transfer matrix method showed that the frequency shift was large when the defect position coincides with a node of vibration and that no shift occurs when it coincides with a loop of vibration. The frequency shift could be approximated by a sinusoidal curve. Calculation results agreed well with those of the experiment in which artificial round holes were drilled as the defect model. Experimental equations predicting the amount of the frequency shift in function of the defect position were obtained. In the inverse procedure, the defect position was determined by comparing the resonance frequencies between the experimental and estimated power spectra so that the coincidence factor S(x) became a minimum. The results showed the validity of the proposed method to identify the defect positions of fewer than two predominant defects.  相似文献
