Utilisation of food resources in migrant and resident birds living sympatrically often leads to differences in feeding strategy. For sit-and-wait hunters such as shrikes, it is connected with competition for food and hunting places. In this study, foraging behaviour of three shrike species was studied in savanna-like habitat in southern Africa. The fieldwork was carried out in December 2017 during wintering season of Lesser Grey Shrike Lanius minor and Red-backed Shrike Lanius collurio and breeding season of Common Fiscal Lanius collaris. Details of the bird's behaviour were recorded during 30 min observations of each bird. A general linear mixed model with logit link function and binomial error variance was used to compare the species’ behaviour. Although the type of perch-site and perching time did not differ between species, Red-backed Shrike used places situated significantly lower than other shrikes. This species also more often used bushes and attacked from lower perch-sites than Lesser Grey Shrike. This may possibly be due to interspecific competition and antipredator behaviour of Red-backed Shrike. No differences in foraging behaviour between Common Fiscal and Lesser Grey Shrike were observed. All three species utilised the same category of prey. Hunting success (the ratio of successful to all attacks) was low and similar in all three species (47%–57%). The lack of statistically significant differences in behaviour, hunting success and size of prey items among shrike species may be a consequence of the relatively short observation time and small sample sizes.  相似文献

Conventional spice powders are often characterized by low sensory quality and high microbial loads. Furthermore, genuine enzymes are only inhibited but not entirely inactivated upon drying, so that they may regain their activity upon rehydration of dried foods. To overcome these problems, initial heating was applied in the present study as the first process step for the production of innovative pastelike parsley products. For this purpose, fresh parsley was blanched (80, 90, and 100 °C for 1-10 min) and subsequently comminuted to form a paste. Alternatively, mincing was carried out prior to heat treatment. Regardless of temperature, the color of the latter product did not show any change after heating for 1 min. With progressing exposure time the green color turned to olive hues due to marked pheophytin formation. Inactivation of genuine peroxidase (POD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) was achieved at all temperature-time regimes applied. In contrast, the parsley products obtained after immediate water-blanching were characterized by brighter green colors and enhanced pigment retention. With the exception of the variants water-blanched at 80 °C, POD and PPO were completely inactivated at any of the thermal treatments. Furthermore, in water-blanched samples, antioxidant capacities as determined by the TEAC and FRAP assays were even enhanced compared to unheated parsley, whereas a decrease of phenolic contents could not be prevented. Consequently, the innovative process presented in this study allows the production of novel herb and spice products characterized by improved sensory quality as compared to conventional spice products.  相似文献

The family Botryosphaeriaceae is one of the most widespread and cosmopolitan endophytic group of fungi. Every year, species of this family cause severe damages on table and wine grape production, worldwide. However, this threat is still poorly known in Algeria. In this study, a large number of Botryosphaeriaceae-like isolates were obtained from symptomatic grapevines collected from eight regions with different ecological conditions, namely: Boumerdès, Médéa, Algiers, Tipaza, El Taref, Sidi Bel Abbes, Biskra and Adrar. The isolates were identified using DNA sequences of the translation elongation factor (tef1-α) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. Eleven species belonging to six genera, including Neofusicoccum parvum, N. algeriense, N. vitifusiforme, N. stellenboschiana, N. luteum, Diplodia seriata, D. olivarum, Lasiodiplodia theobromae, Dothiorella sarmentorum, Botryosphaeria dothidea and Neoscytalidium dimidiatum were identified. The spatial distribution of the Botryosphaeriaceae showed that D. seriata and N. stellenboschiana were the most widespread in the Algerian vineyards, while L. theobromae was recorded in the desert region of Biskra. Pathogenicity trials showed that all species were pathogenic on detached green shoots of grapevine, with N. parvum and L. theobromae being the most aggressive.

Classical swine fever (CSF) is a highly contagious and often fatal disease of pigs characterised by fever, severe leukopenia and haemorrhages. With vaccines having an importance in disease control, studies are seeking improved protein-based subunit vaccine against the virus (CSFV). In this respect, recombinant viral NS3 protein was analysed for its immunopotentiating capacity, particularly in terms of cytotoxic immune responses. NS3 was effective at inducing in vitro responses, quantified by lymphoproliferation, IFN-gamma ELISPOT, flow cytometric detection of activated T cell subsets, and cytotoxic T cell assays. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from CSFV-immune pigs could be stimulated, but not cells from na?ve animals. In addition to the IFN-gamma responses, induction of both CD4+ T helper cell and CD8+ cytotoxic T cells (CTL) were discernible--activation of the latter was confirmed in a virus-specific cytolytic assay. Attempts were made to translate this to the in vivo situation, by vaccinating pigs with an E2/NS3-based vaccine compared with an E2 subunit vaccine. Both vaccines were similar in their abilities to stimulate specific immune responses and protect pigs against lethal CSFV infection. Although the E2/NS3 vaccine appeared to have an advantage in terms of antibody induction, this was not statistically significant when group studies were performed. It was also difficult to visualise the NS3 capacity to promote T-cell responses in vivo. These results show that NS3 has potential for promoting cytotoxic defences, but the formulation of the vaccine requires optimisation for ensuring that NS3 is correctly delivered to antigen presenting cells for efficient activation of CTL.  相似文献

Dietary supplements are among the most rapidly growing products in the food and personal care market with an estimated worldwide volume exceeding $60 billion. The main problem associated with dietary supplements is their legal classification. Being neither food nor medicine, they often inhabit a gray area between the two, which makes legal regulatory extremely difficult. Thus, a coexistence of products processed from the same botanical source on the same market as dietary supplement or pharmaceutical is possible. In the present study, various artichoke-based dietary supplements were investigated for their phenolic profile and compared to artichoke phytopharmaceuticals. Quantification of individual hydroxycinnamic acids and flavonoids was carried out by external calibration. For the first time, determination of several apigenin derivatives was included. Chlorogenic acid represented the major constituent in all samples investigated with the exception of juice derived from fresh flower heads, which exhibited a higher cynarin content. Furthermore, a distinction between products made from artichoke leaves or flower heads was possible. The results obtained revealed great diversity of pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements, highlighting the need of standardized quality requirements.  相似文献

Industrial activities result in increasing amounts of technical substrates being deposited in landfills. These substrates are subject to weathering and pedogenic processes. We studied the chemical and mineralogical transformations on naturally weathered waste deposits of soda industry. Four sites differing in age (15, 19, 57, and 70 years) and derived from carbonatic slurry (mainly CaO.H2O, CaCO3, NaCl) were selected. The formed soils, calcareous spolic Regosols, are weakly to strongly alkaline with pH values ranging from 8 to 12. Within 15 years, the substrate's initial pH of 12 drops rapidly in the topsoil due to the reaction of dissolved Ca either with CO2 from the atmosphere or evolved by microbial respiration and finally stabilizes at around 8.1. All soils show high electrical conductivity, up to 12.3 mS cm− 1 at the youngest site. The electrical conductivity strongly decreases within 70 years of weathering due to leaching processes and the formation of less soluble secondary minerals. The content of organic C in the studied soils ranges from 2.4 to 70.8 g kg− 1 and stocks increase with site age. Soil structure and soil color change distinctly. The binding of CO2 results in large amounts of carbonate, increasing with time. Seventy years after deposition, calcite [CaCO3] dominates the topsoil (0–30 cm depth), comprising about 80% of the soil material. The mineral composition was characterized by X-ray diffraction. Besides calcite, we found different quantities and different distributions of the less common minerals ettringite [Ca6(Al(OH)6)2(SO4)3  26H2O], thaumasite [Ca6(Si(OH)6)2(CO3)2(SO4)2  24H2O], hydrocalumite [Ca2Al(OH)7  2H2O] and hydrotalcite [Mg6Al2(CO3)(OH)16  4H2O]. Formation and alteration of these minerals are basically influenced by changes in the soil pH. With progressing weathering neither thaumasite nor ettringite are stable due to the non-favorable soil reaction (pH  8.1). In contrast, hydrocalumite and hydrotalcite exist in all investigated soils. They are stable also under weakly alkaline conditions and thus may exist in all carbonatic soils. Results indicate a surprisingly rapid soil development driven by the highly dynamic formation and alteration of minerals in carbonatic substrates under alkaline conditions.  相似文献

A new compound maleimide-5-oxime was isolated, together with 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, tetillapyrone, from the ethyl acetate extract of the marine sponge Haliclona baeri while tetillapyrone, nortetillapyrone, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde and phenylacetic acid were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of Haliclona cymaeformis, collected from the Gulf of Thailand. The structures of tetillapyrone and nortetillapyrone were re-examined using HMBC correlations. Maleimide-5-oxime, tetillapyrone and nortetillapyrone were found to be inactive against three human tumor cell lines (the estrogen-dependent ER(+) MCF-7, the estrogen-independent ER(−) MDA-MB-231 and NCI-H460. Maleimide-5-oxime, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, phenylacetic acid, tetillapyrone and nortetillapyrone were evaluated for their growth inhibitory effect against seven yeasts and eight filamentous fungi. Only nortetillapyrone showed antifungal activity, with a preponderance on the dermatophytic filamentous fungi.  相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate the performance of Pyrrhulina larvae, Pyrrhulina brevis, under different photoperiods and feeding frequencies. A completely randomized design was used, with four replicates in a 5 × 2 factorial, with five photoperiods (6L:18D, 12L:12D, 16L:8D, 20L:4D, 24L:0D) and two feeding frequencies (two or four times a day). Four hundred larvae with an initial length of 4.6 ± 0.09 mm were randomly distributed in 40, 1‐L containers at a density of 10 larvae/L. Feeding was performed with Artemia nauplii in the ratio of 150 Artemia nauplii/larva/feeding. After 15 days, all larvae were euthanized for measurements of length (mm), final weight (mg), survival rate (%) and larvae uniformity in weight an length (%). The data were subjected to analysis of variance and subsequently, in case of significance, a Tukey test was performed to compare means. There was no interaction between photoperiod and feeding frequency on studied variables (P > 0.05). Likewise, there was no influence of feed rate on the same variables (P > 0.05). There was only influence of photoperiod, where the larvae subjected to longest photoperiods (24L:0D and 20L:4D) showed improved weight and length (P < 0.05). Therefore, a photoperiod of 20L:4E, with feeding twice a day is recommended.  相似文献

Background  

The sesquiterpene, (E)-β-farnesene (EBF), is the principal component of the alarm pheromone of many aphid species. Released when aphids are attacked by enemies, EBF leads aphids to undertake predator avoidance behaviors and to produce more winged offspring that can leave the plant. Many plants also release EBF as a volatile, and so it has been proposed that this compound could act to defend plants against aphid infestation by 1) deterring aphids from settling, 2) reducing aphid performance due to frequent interruption of feeding and 3) inducing the production of more winged offspring. Here we tested the costs and benefits of EBF as a defense against the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, using transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana lines engineered to continuously emit EBF.  相似文献
