Botrytis cinerea, which causes grey mould, is a major pathogen of many crops. On strawberry, isolates of Trichoderma spp. can effectively control B. cinerea, but frequent application is necessary. Bees can be used to disseminate biological control agents to the target crop. We tested the ability of honey bees to disseminate Trichoderma harzianum T39 to control B. cinerea in strawberry in the field during the winter in Israel over two consecutive seasons. We used the recently developed ‘Triwaks’ dispenser for loading the bees with the T. harzianum inoculum. During both years, grey mould developed in late January in untreated control plots; at low to medium disease levels it was partially controlled by fungicide treatment, and was best controlled in bee-visited plots. At high disease levels neither chemical nor biological control was effective. To assess the spatial distribution of inoculum by bees, we sampled flowers up to 200 m from the hives and found effective levels of T. harzianum even at 200 m. The approach used in this study provides an effective control of grey mould in strawberry in conditions of low to medium grey mould incidence.  相似文献

Drainage-weighing lysimeters allowed monitoring of water balance components of non-bearing olive (Olea europaea cv Barnea) trees over a 3-month period including short-term events of controlled but severe water stress. The objective of the study was to evaluate a variety of soil and plant-based water status and drought stress monitoring methods on the basis of tree-scale evapotranspiration (ET). As the trees entered into and recovered from water stress, meteorological data, actual ET (ETa), soil water content and changes in leaf turgor pressure were continuously monitored. Additionally, midday measurements of stem water potential, stomatal conductance, canopy temperature, and quantum yield of PSII photochemistry were conducted. Diurnal (dawn to dusk) measurements of all the above were made hourly on days of maximum stress. Shoot elongation rate was measured for periods of stress and recovery. Quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, stomatal conductance, and stem water potential all successfully indicated reductions in whole-tree water consumption beginning at moderate stress levels. These measured parameters fully recovered to the levels of non-stressed trees soon after water application was renewed. Shoot elongation was reduced 25-30% for the 10-day period during and following drought and recovered thereafter to levels of non-stressed trees. Whole-tree ETa was reduced by as much as 20% even following full recovery of the leaf level parameters, suggesting reduced canopy size and growth due to the stress period. Non-destructive, continuous (turgor pressure) and remotely sensed (canopy temperature) methods showed promising potential for monitoring effects of water stress, in spite of technological and data interpretation challenges requiring further attention.  相似文献

The management of diabetes mellitus mandates measurement of blood glucose. Saliva offers an alternative to blood sampling, but measurement of the salivary glucose concentration is difficult, and the blood-to-saliva glucose time lag is uncertain. We aimed to determine the serum–saliva glucose time lag in the saliva of healthy dogs. The combined duct of the mandibular and sublingual salivary glands of 6 dogs was cannulated to collect saliva and prevent glucose degradation by oral bacteria. Following a 0.25 g/kg IV bolus of dextrose, paired serum–saliva samples were collected at baseline and in twelve 5-min blocks over 60 min. Serum and salivary glucose levels were analyzed with a linear mixed model for repeated measures with a compound symmetry error structure. Mean (±SD) saliva production was 10.3 ± 2.9 µL/kg/min, and the area under the curve (AUCglucose)saliva/serum ratio was 0.006, which highlights the magnitude of the large difference in glucose concentration between the 2 compartments. We investigated the effect of small-scale overstory gaps on the ecophysiology and growth of Quercus ithaburensis saplings. The study aim was to characterize how changes in daily exposure to direct beam radiation affect photosynthetic performance in the short term and growth and biomass partitioning in the long term. Using individual net-houses, the following treatments were applied: (a) Unshaded (daily irradiance = 100 %), (b) shading net with no gap (Shade-daily irradiance = 6 %), (c) shading net with 1 h gap allowing direct beam radiation (11:00 am–12:00 pm, Shade+1-irradiance = 20 %), (d) shading net with 3 h gap (11:00 am–2:00 pm, Shade+3-irradiance = 44 %). The experiment was performed in an irrigated field. We measured growth, biomass allocation, leaf traits, daily courses of leaf gas exchange and water potential. Oak dry-weight increased while height to dry-weight ratio and specific leaf area decreased with increasing daily exposure to direct beam radiation. Leaf chlorophyll content was less affected. Higher net carbon assimilation rates (A), stomatal conductance (gs) and A/gs were associated with higher instantaneous photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) throughout the entire experimental PPFD range. However, during gap-hours, while exposed to saturating radiation levels of similar level (ca. 1,800 µmol photon m?2 s?1), A in the Shade+1 oaks was about half that of the Shade+3 oaks and nearly one-third that of the Unshaded oaks. Patterns of gs, intercellular CO2 (Ci) and quantum efficiency of photosystem II pointed towards the possibility of a metabolic limitation. In conclusion, oaks benefited significantly from small scale overstory gaps though their capacity to utilize transient saturating radiation levels decreased with decreasing gap duration.  相似文献

Cone and seed characters were observed on top, middle and bottom portions of tree crown in 3 ramets/clone in three Turkish Pinus sylvestris seed orchards. Broad sense heritability (clonal repeatability), and correlations among characters were estimated. Around one quarter of the seed production occurred in the top portion, half in the middle and one quarter in the bottom portion of the crown for all orchards. The percentage of filled seeds varied little with the crown position, indicating more or less similar levels of selfing in the bottom of the crown as in the top. The seed weight was typically 11 mg. Differences were found for studied cone and seed characters among orchards and crown positions. Variation among grafts within clone was higher than among clones for most characters. The heritability was on average below 0.5 (e.g., cone diameter, number of filled seed per cone) and rarely rose above that (e.g., cone form, length/diameter; percentage of filled seed) for any individual characters. The coefficient of variation within clones was often higher than among clones. Thus, non-genetic factors seem often more important for the variation in performance of grafts than their genetic constitution. Cone form (length/diameter) was the character where the clone influence was the strongest. Cone number and cone dry weight showed significant correlations with seed characters (numbers of total and filled seed, percentage and weight of filled seeds).   • ? The annual genetic progress under a budget constraint was compared for a number of scenarios. The factors considered were: genetic parameters, recruitment population size, mating number per grandparent, cost of plants and parents, selection age and time components. Phenotypic selection forward was assumed. Using more parents than grandparents affects the testing population only, thus, gene diversity loss and breeding population size remain constant.
  • ? Using larger number of parents than grandparents was a superior strategy at all scenarios tested. The strategy with 6 parents per grandparent and 1% of the tested plants selected on their phenotype at age 15 for further mating is recommendable. The strategy to choose 6 parents per grandparent was robust over a heritability range 0.05 to 0.2. At a higher heritability, the optimum number of parents per grandparent was 2 to 4.
  • ? Using larger number of parents than grandparents has the potential to improve annual genetic gain in the magnitude of 50% compared to the strategies currently used for Scots pine in Sweden.

    The research facilities at the fish experimental station at Sunndalsöra are described. The design of a selection experiment with salmon and sea trout is presented. The station is also used for other purposes, such as investigations into nutrition, pathology and environmental factors.In this paper analyses of observed differences to vibrio disease (Vibrio anguillarum) are reported. Significant differences in resistance between river strains of salmon parr were found. The difference between localities are supposed to be partly heritable.The data were also used to estimate the heritability on an intra-river basis. The estimates were 0.12 and 0.07 based on the sire and dam component, respectively. It is concluded that selection against vibrio disease will result in genetic change.  相似文献

    1. The administration of the anti‐oestrogen, tamoxifen (TAM) to juvenile chicks results in precocious puberty. In the present study the effects of TAM administration (1 mg/kg body weight on alternate days from 12 d of age) on testicular function, hypothalamic chicken gonadotropin‐re‐leasing hormone (cGn‐RH‐I), plasma luteinising hormone (LH), growth hormone (GH), prolactin (PRL) and testosterone were studied in juvenile White Leghorn cockerels.

    2. The increase in hypothalamic GnRH‐I content which occurs during sexual development was advanced in TAM‐treated birds, in association with precocious testicular development, an early rise of plasma testosterone content and enhanced comb growth.

    3. Plasma LH concentrations behaved similarly and were higher in the TAM‐treated than in control birds, during most of the experimental period. Plasma PRL concentration, which is high at hatching, decreased more quickly in TAM‐treated than in control birds; plasma GH values were not consistently affected by TAM treatment.

    4. Both the growth and the involution of the bursa of Fabricius in the TAM‐treated cockerels preceded that in the control chicks.

    5. It is concluded that TAM treatment induces precocious puberty in the cockerel by blocking the negative feedback action of aromatised testicular androgens on the hypothalamus.  相似文献
