The aim of this study was to determine whether the lung side being sampled would significantly influence bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cytological profiles and subsequent diagnosis in Standardbred racehorses. One hundred and thirty-eight French Trotters in active training and racing were included in a prospective observational study. BAL was performed using videoendoscopy in both right and left lungs during summer meetings in 2011 (64 horses) and 2012 (74 horses). Cytological data performed 24 h later from right and left lungs were compared and specifically used to classify horses as affected with exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH), inflammatory airway disease (IAD), or were ‘controls’. For IAD, cytological definition was based on two different cut off values.Neutrophil percentages, haemosiderophage percentages and the haemosiderophage/macrophage (H/M) ratios were significantly higher in the right compared to the left lung. Measures of intra-class correlation coefficients revealed a fair agreement between left and right lungs for percentages of mast cells, eosinophils, and for the H/M ratio, and a moderate agreement for neutrophil percentages. Fair to moderate agreements were observed between left and right lungs for the diagnosis of IAD and/or EIPH based on kappa coefficients. When sampling one lung only, the risk of incorrectly classifying a horse as a ‘control’ increased with the use of the restraint cut-off values for IAD. As BAL from one lung is not representative of the other lung in the same horse, both lungs should be sampled for a better assessment of lung cellularity and for a precise diagnosis of lower airway diseases.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo develop and evaluate a method for ultrasound-guidance in performing the proximal paravertebral block for flank anaesthesia in cattle through a cadaveric study, followed by clinical application.Study designprospective experimental cadaveric study and clinical series.AnimalsPreviously frozen lumbar sections of cows without known spinal abnormalities were used. The clinical case group comprised of ten animals for which a right flank laparotomy was indicated.MethodsTwenty cow cadavers were used to perform ultrasound-guided bilateral injections of 1.0 mL dye (1.0 mL 1% Toluidine Blue in 1% Borax) at the intervertebral foramen at the level of T13, L1 and L2 spinal nerves. Distance and depth of injection, staining of the dorsal and ventral nerve branches, and deviation from the target were evaluated. The investigator’s confidence as to visualisation and expected success at staining the nerve was assessed. Ten clinical cases received the ultrasound-guided proximal paravertebral anaesthesia. Analgesic success was evaluated using a 4-grade scoring system at 10 minutes after the injection and during surgery, respectively. Categorical variables were described using frequencies and proportions.ResultsBoth dorsal and ventral branches of the spinal nerves T13, L1 or L2 were at least partially stained in 41% of injections, while in 77% of injections one of the branches was stained. Five out of ten clinical cases had a satisfactory anaesthesia. There was no significant association between confidence at injection and either staining or analgesic success.ConclusionResults from the cadaveric and clinical study suggest no significant improvement using ultrasound guidance to perform proximal paravertebral block in cows compared to our previous clinical experience and to references in the literature using the blind method.Clinical relevanceFurther research should be conducted to improve the ultrasound-guided technique described in this study.  相似文献

The effects of feeding live or frozen grass shrimp (Palaemonetes varians) to the cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, were determined in two experiments. During Experiment I, two populations of 30 cuttlefish (aged 90 days old) were fed either live or frozen grass shrimp. Cuttlefish fed live shrimp grew larger, matured earlier, had a shorter life cycle (255 days) than the ones fed frozen shrimp (282 days), and had lower mortality. Females from the group fed frozen shrimp matured a month later but were significantly larger, 130.9 ± 38.5 g, compared to 74.2 ± 16.0 g, laid larger eggs, 0.47 ± 0.11 g, compared to 0.28 ± 0.10 g, and had higher individual fecundity (411 eggs female−1, compared to 150 eggs female−1). Newly born hatchlings from both groups had similar weights. During Experiment II, six replicates of 15 cuttlefish (50 days old) were used, three for each of the two diets tested. The exact same amount of live or frozen shrimp was provided to both populations twice a day. No differences in growth and feeding rates or food conversions were found at the end of the experiment. During the first week, cuttlefish fed frozen shrimp grew larger, and had higher conversion rates, compared to the ones fed live shrimp. Mortality was higher for the group fed live shrimp (36.6%) in Experiment II, mainly occurring during the last week. Mortality for cuttlefish fed frozen shrimp in Experiment II was 2.2%. Results obtained here indicate that freezing the grass shrimp only had a negative effect on the survival of S. officinalis in Experiment I. A syndrome of abdominal distension has been described in sea-farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The anomaly was investigated with respect to changes in morphology, osmoregulation and nutritional status in 0.7-2-kg fish. The fish were visually classified according to the degree of abdominal distension as normal, moderately affected or markedly affected. The thickness of the abdominal wall was greatly reduced in the affected compared to the normal fish. The mean stomach contents of the moderately and markedly affected fish were two and six times higher than the normal, respectively. There was an increased amount of water in the stomach contents of both groups of affected fish, while no differences in stomach dry matter content were documented between the three groups. In about half of the normal group and in most of both the affected groups there was a marked accumulation of fat in the stomach, visible as a distinct dark-coloured oil layer. There were no intergroup differences in the water, fat or dry matter contents in the small and large intestine digesta. Both groups of affected fish had less visceral and muscle tissue fat than normal fish. The occurrence of an opaque, whitish blood plasma was greater among the affected than the normal fish. The affected fish had a higher mean blood plasma osmolality and Na+ and Cl concentration than the normal fish. An increased plasma concentration of glucose and insulin, but a decreased cholesterol concentration, were also measured in the affected fish. There were no intergroup differences in the condition factor of the fish.  相似文献

  • 1. Implementation of the E.U. Habitats Directive requires information on the distribution, abundance and area covered by the habitats listed in Annex I of the Directive.
  • 2. In Finland, 21 of these habitats occur in marine and coastal areas. The demand for spatial information of these habitats is increasing, so rapid and relatively inexpensive mapping methods are needed.
  • 3. This study examines the identification of 15 habitats using high altitude black and white aerial photographs. Our goal was to find out how well these habitats could be identified using these types of photographs. We used a test group of 34 persons who were given only brief instructions on how to identify the habitats prior to the test. Their results were compared to a set of field data from an archipelago area at the entrance of the Gulf of Finland, in August 1999 and autumn 2000.
  • 4. The test group identified sandy beaches, lagoons, submerged sandbanks and cliffs with an accuracy of 82%, 71%, 66% and 65%, respectively. The main reasons for these high accuracy percentages were apparently the high contrast and/or easy delineation of the habitat from the surrounding areas.
  • 5. Reefs, wooded dunes and submerged reefs were identified with an accuracy of 39%, 44% and 45%, respectively. The remaining habitats were less precisely identified, apparently due to their small size or poor contrast to the surrounding areas.
  • 6. High altitude aerial photographs are shown to be a useful tool for identifying several of these habitats and can be used as a complement to field mapping methods, GIS methods and other remote sensing techniques. The use of high altitude photographs for monitoring change is discussed.

  • 1. The coralligenous habitat was studied at the large Mediterranean scale, by applying a standardized, non‐destructive photo‐sampling protocol, developed in the framework of the CIGESMED project.
  • 2. The results provided evidence to support the following statements: (a) the assemblage pattern is not homogeneously distributed across the four Mediterranean ecoregions studied (biotic gradients hypothesis); and (b) the assemblage pattern does not change significantly when the information is aggregated to higher taxonomic levels (taxonomic sufficiency hypothesis).
  • 3. Surrogate taxonomic categories higher than species, such as genus and family, can be used to reveal the multivariate pattern of the coralligenous assemblages.
  • 4. Although preliminary at the pan‐Mediterranean scale, these outcomes set the scene for future comparisons as more data sets become available but also for comparisons between taxonomic and functional patterns.
