This study documents the presence of comedones and follicular cysts of palmar and plantar interdigital skin as an underlying cause of recurrent dermatitis, and describes the use of a carbon dioxide laser to surgically remove lesions. The 28 dogs included in the study had: (i) recurrent lameness, pain, and nodules, or draining sinuses in the dorsal interdigital skin, (ii) failed to respond to antibiotic therapy, and (iii) were negative for Demodex mites and dermatophytes. All 28 had laser surgery; nine dogs had two surgical procedures and two dogs had three surgical procedures for lesion recurrence. Fifteen dogs had skin samples collected for histopathology. Clinical features in ventral interdigital skin included alopecia, callus-like thickening, and comedones. Histological features included hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, comedones and follicular cysts, furunculosis, draining sinuses, and scarring. Surface trauma to the ventral interdigital skin appeared to contribute to lesion development. Laser surgery allowed removal of multiple layers of cysts and adjacent hair follicles and the tracking and removal of sinuses. One dog was euthanized for orthopaedic lameness 1 month after laser surgery, but post-surgical follow-up (1.0-8.0 years - mean 3 years) from the remaining 27 dogs revealed that laser therapy of affected skin and adjacent hair follicles resulted in resolution of interdigital lesions in 25. Two dogs continued to develop interdigital cysts.  相似文献

In the spring of 1998, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute received numerous reports of lesioned or ulcerated fish primarily from the St. Lucie Estuary on the southeast coast of Florida, an area known since the late 1970s for lesions of the ulcerative mycosis (UM) type. From these and archived reports, as well as others received from different areas of Florida, we documented that diseased specimens had randomly distributed skin ulcers (usually reddened or hemorrhagic) with raised irregular margins and, in some cases, deeply penetrating hyphae in the surrounding muscle tissue. Since 1998, 256 fish (comprising 18 species) with ulcerative lesions (from 15 different locations) were confirmed with hyphae in fresh squash preparation or by histological evaluation. Squash preparations revealed nonseptate, sparsely branching, thick-walled hyphae; histological sections revealed mycotic granulomas in the dermis that occasionally penetrated into the skeletal muscle. These pathological characteristics were consistent with UM caused by the oomycete Aphanomyces invadans in Southeast Asia, Japan, Australia, and the United States. For specific identification, six isolates from ulcerated fish were cultured and prepared for molecular characterization using established diagnostic methods. Ribosomal RNA gene sequence analysis identified three isolates as Aphanomyces invadans, one as the oomycete Achlya bisexualis, and two as the ascomycete Phialemonium dimorphosporum. A more extensive survey of 67 ulcerated skin samples from fish collected between 1998 and 2003 was performed using a polymerase chain reaction assay specific for Aphanomyces invadans. Of these, 26 (38.8%) samples from seven fish species and nine collection locations were positive. Confirmation of UM associated with Aphanomyces invadans represents new host records in Florida for the sheepshead Archosargus probatocephalus, striped mullet Mugil cephalus, white mullet Mugil curema, silver perch Bairdiella chrysoura, black drum Pogonias cromis, largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides, and American shad Alosa sapidissima.  相似文献

The role of high carbon dioxide (CO2) levels on fish performance, bone structure/composition and as a potential cause of spinal deformities was studied. Two groups of fish were exposed to a low (control) and a high level of CO2 for 135 days during the freshwater period. After smoltification, the fish were transferred to seawater and followed up for 517 days until they reached harvest weight (3.1 kg BW).Differences in body weight between the control and high CO2 groups were observed. At the end of the freshwater period, average weight in the group exposed to high CO2 levels was 20.9% lower than in the control group. Specific growth rates (SGR) from the start of the experiment (10 g BW) to smolt stage were 1.63 ± 0.04 and 1.36 ± 0.01 for the control group and the high CO2 group, respectively. Differences in body weight were maintained during the initial stages of the seawater period, but were not observed at harvest weight.Nephrocalcinosis was not observed in any of the experimental groups at the end of the freshwater period and no external signs of spinal deformities were observed either at smolt stage or at harvest weight. X-rays revealed mild abnormalities in some vertebrae bodies, which could not be related to any experimental group. Despite the lack of signs of pathological bone alterations, the histological examination suggested that the exposure to high CO2levels resulted in an increase in trabeculae volume and a higher rate of bone remodeling at the end of the freshwater period. Furthermore, fish exposed to a high CO2 level presented a higher bone ash content at the end of the freshwater period. These differences could not be observed at the end of the grow-out period.  相似文献

Relativistic quantum calculations at the CASSCF- and CCI-levels were performed on the Hg(SH)2, HgSH and HgS molecules. The relativistic effects were taken into account by a relativistic effective core potential method. Dissociation energies and optimal geometries were calculated for these three molecules, which are plausible atmospheric Hg compounds. The Hg(SH)2 and HgSH molecules (in the gaseous phase) have never been studied before, neither experimentally nor theoretically, i.e. the existence of these molecules are uncertain. The theoretical dissociation energies, De's, of Hg(SH)2 and HgSH (at the CCI-level) were 59 kcal·mol?1 and 3 kcal·mol?1, respectively, indicating that Hg(SH)2 could be stable in the atmosphere but probably not HgSH. The theoretical De of HgS differs very much from the experimental one, but the reason for this is not clear. The Hg-S distances for Hg(SH)2, HgSH and HgS were found to be 2.38, 2.63 and 2.30 Å, respectively. The Hg-S-H angle in Hg(SH)2 was optimized to 93°. The excitation energies of Hg(SH)2, Hg(SH)2(H2O)4 and (HSHg)2S were calculated in order to see whether these species can absorb photons with wavelengths longer than 290 nm (the sunlight limit) and subsequently be photolyzed. The Hg(SH)2(H2O)4 complex is intended as a model for Hg(SH)2(aq). Photoreduction of Hg-sulfide species in sea water, yielding Hg0, could be an important source of Hg in the atmosphere. Excitation energies lower than the sunlight limit (4.3 eV≈290 nm) were found for Hg(SH)2 and Hg(SH)2(H2O)4, although the lowest spin and dipole allowed excitations probably lie slightly (0.2 to 0.3 eV) above this limit. Therefore a photodecomposition of Hg(SH)2(g) and Hg(SH)2(aq) by sunlight seems likely to occur.  相似文献

A multichannel flavor delivery system, Dynataste, was developed. Controlled amounts of isoamyl acetate (100 ppm) and sucrose (0-3%) solution was administered to experienced and na?ve assessors who used time intensity techniques to record perceived 'fruit' flavor intensity. In-nose volatile delivery was monitored using atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-mass spectrometry. Results indicated that sucrose is a key driver of fruit flavor intensity but that the magnitude of the effect varies between individuals. The combined temporal analysis of chemical stimuli in vivo and sensory data indicate evidence of interactions at a perceptual level. Comparison of experienced and na?ve assessors revealed cross-modal interactions in each group, although a subgroup of experienced assessors was unaffected by changes in sucrose concentration. This raises the question of the selected use of experienced panels in cross modal investigations.  相似文献

The gene of the most abundant protease inhibitor in potato cv. Elkana was isolated and sequenced. The deduced amino acid sequence of this gene showed 98% identity with potato serine protease inhibitor (PSPI), a member of the Kunitz family. Therefore, the most abundant protease inhibitor was considered to be one of the isoforms of PSPI. The PSPI group represents approximately 22% of the total amount of proteins in potato cv. Elkana and is composed of seven different isoforms that slightly differ in isoelectric point. Antibodies were raised against the two most abundant isoforms of PSPI. The binding of these antibodies to PSPI isoforms and protease inhibitors from different groups of protease inhibitor in potato showed that approximately 70% of the protease inhibitors present in potato juice belong to the Kunitz family.  相似文献
