Leaf development of shoots exposed to full sunlight and shoots shaded by the canopy was followed in field-grown, mature peach trees (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch, cv. Loring) during the first half of the 1995 growing season. The architecture and size of shaded shoots and sun-exposed shoots differed significantly. Total number of leaves produced on shaded shoots was significantly less than on sun-exposed shoots throughout the season, and differences in leaf number between light conditions increased as the season progressed. The overall patterns of leaf development along sun-exposed and shaded shoots were qualitatively similar. The expression pattern of the type II chlorophyll a/b-binding protein gene, Lhcb2*Pp1, determined by RNA abundance in leaves at different positions along the shoot, was also similar between the two light conditions. The major difference between sun-exposed and shaded leaves was a lower abundance of Lhcb2*Pp1 RNA in mature, shaded leaves compared with sun-exposed leaves. Although the number of fruit per shoot was significantly lower on shaded shoots than on sun-exposed shoots, the rate of fruit drop was not substantially different during the growing season, indicating that quantitative differences in leaf initiation and growth caused by differences in light exposure did not adversely affect fruit retention. However, based on comparison with a previous study of leaf development in non-fruiting trees, reproductive development slowed the rate of vegetative growth without affecting the overall pattern of leaf development along the shoots.  相似文献

Recruitment and retention of specialists to academia appears to be a growing problem in university teaching hospitals. Members of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) believe that the movement of surgery specialists to practice may have an impact on the training of veterinary students and surgery residents. To address these concerns, 1,071 ACVS diplomates and 60 department heads and hospital directors from all veterinary schools in North America were surveyed to determine whether a problem exists, the extent of the problem, and potential reasons for migration of specialists to practice. Responses were obtained from 620 ACVS diplomates (58 per cent) and 38 department heads and hospital directors (63%) from 28 different universities. The responses confirmed a net movement of surgery specialists from academia to practice. Eighty seven percent of department heads and hospital directors believed there was a shortage of small animal surgery specialists in academia; this information was supported by the fact that 47% responded that they had open positions and 68% had difficulty filling positions in the last five years. The demand was slightly less for large animal surgery specialists, and 42 per cent of respondents indicated that they had open positions. Financial considerations were the most common reason for surgery specialists to move from academia to private practice. Seventy-six percent of responding ACVS diplomates in private practice had a total compensation package valued at greater than $125,000 per year, whereas 77.8% of diplomates in academia had total compensation valued at $125,000 or less. Most universities offer starting salaries (not including benefits) for recently certified surgery specialists ranging from $70,000 to $90,000. Reasons for moving from academia to practice besides financial considerations included undesirable location of university hospitals; lack of interest in research; and a belief that university administration was not supportive of surgery specialists. Many academic surgery specialists were frustrated by the requirement for productivity in research, teaching, and service for promotion in tenure-track positions.  相似文献

Genebanks complement other conservation programs because they preserve genetic diversity needed for future breeding and restoration. We evaluated efficiency of capturing genetic diversity, using endangered Zizania texana (Texas wild rice) as a model for plants with recalcitrant seeds. This perennial aquatic grass is restricted to 4 km of the San Marcos River in Texas. An early conservation collection included plants from stands throughout the river, based on the assumption stands would be unique genotypes. Using microsatellite markers, we found that genetic diversity was concentrated in five of 15 large, demographically stable stands; 96 stands smaller than 2 m2 contributed no unique alleles. High heterozygosity and few duplicate genotypes suggested that sexual reproduction occurs more often than presumed. Simulations of stratified sampling of large stands captured all alleles in only 45 individuals, while random sampling along the river captured much less diversity. The early conservation collection captured as much diversity as expected from random sampling. Texas wild rice stands resemble a mainland-island metapopulation; our analyses suggest that stratified sampling maximizes genetic diversity for this population dynamic. Demographic and genetic information is important for validating the design of efficient ex situ collections and guiding in situ conservation.  相似文献

We examined landscape supplementation (sensu [Oikos 65 (1992) 169]) by forest birds along forest/savanna boundaries in central Brazil to: (1) verify the role of savanna vegetation in providing resources to forest bird communities; (2) suggest minimum amounts of savannas to be conserved within corridors, to provide adequate foraging habitat for forest birds outside reserves. Transect counts parallel (n=64) and perpendicular (n=64) to forests were conducted in eight savannas (cerrado sensu stricto) between February 2000 and January 2001. Patterns of species richness and abundance of birds in relation to distances from forests were examined using Generalised Linear Mixed Models. Omnivores were the most abundant birds foraging in savannas, followed by insectivores and frugivores. Landscape supplementation in savannas was proportional to the density of savanna vegetation. Also, it was higher in the breeding season than in the non-breeding period. These two patterns suggest that surrounding savannas play a major role in providing additional foraging areas for forest bird species. We suggest that the environmental policy currently protecting 20 m of gallery forests along each side of rivers be modified to include at least 60 m of savanna along these forests through central Brazil. The study suggests that appropriate conservation efforts should also encompass the surrounding matrix to which the home ranges of target species are expanded, and not only their major habitat.  相似文献

Summary The distribution of a crop rooting system can be defined by root length density (RD), root length (RL) per soil layer of depth z, sum of root length (SRL) in the soil profile (total root length) or rooting depth (z r . The combined influence of these root system parameters on water uptake is not well understood. In the present study, field data are evaluated and an attempt is made to relate a daily maximum water uptake rate (WUmax) per unit soil volume as measured in different soil layers of the profile to relevant parameters of the root system. We hypothesize that local uptake rate is at its maximum when neither soil nor root characteristics limit water flow to, and uptake by, roots. Leaf area index and the potential evapotranspiration rate (ET p ) are also important in determining WUmax, since these quantities influence transpiration and hence total crop water uptake rate. Field studies in Germany and in Western Australia showed that WUmax depends on RD. In general, there was a strong correlation between the maximum water uptake rate of a soil layer (LWUmax) normalized by ET p and RL normalized by SRL. The quantity LWUmax · ET p -1 was linearly related to (RL/SRL)1/2. The data show that the single root model will not predict the influence of RD on WUmax correctly under field conditions when water-extracting neighboring roots may cause non-steady-state conditions within the time span of sequential observations. Since the rooting depth z r was linearly related to (SRL)1/2, the relation: LWUmax · ET p -1 = f (RL1/2/z r ) holds. Furthermore it was found that the maximum specific uptake rate per cm root length URmax was inversely related to RD1/2 and to SRL1/2 or z r of the profile. Observed high specific uptake rates of shallow rooted crops might be explained not only by their lower RD-values but also by the additional effect of a low z r . The relations found in this paper are helpful for realistically describing the sink term of dynamic water uptake models.Growing plants extract water from the soil to meet transpiration needs. Rates of transpiration and of water uptake are set by evaporative demand and by plant and soil factors which influence capacity to meet that demand. These factors include crop canopy size and leaf characteristics, root system characteristics and hydraulic properties of the soil and the soil-root interface. Soil and root system properties vary with depth and all factors vary in time, so that parameters related to them require constant updating over a crop season.Dynamic simulation models describe water uptake by root systems under field conditions as a function of soil depth and time. Many of these simulation approaches are based on Gardner's (1960) single root model (Feddes 1981). These simulation procedures follow the assumption that water uptake is proportional to a difference in water potential between the bulk soil and the root surface or the plant interior, to the hydraulic conductivity of the soil-plant system and to the effectiveness of competing roots in water uptake. The effectiveness factor accounts more or less empirically for the influence of various root system parameters on water uptake such as percentage of active roots absorbing water, root surface permeability, root length density determining the distance between neighbouring roots, or total root length and depth of the root system. Such models however, will not always reflect correctly the influence of root system characteristics on water uptake since these assumptions have rarely been tested under field conditions. In many instances, there is better agreement between simulated and measured total water use of plants than between predicted and observed water depletion by roots within individual layers of the soil profile (Alaerts et al. 1985).Water uptake by an expanding root system as a function of depth and time has been studied under field conditions for several crops (listed in Herkelrath et al. 1977a; Feddes 1981; Hamblin 1985). They show that the dynamics of water uptake depend on root length density and the availability of soil water. However, the combined influence of root length density, total root length and rooting depth on the water uptake pattern has not been assessed. An evaluation of root system parameters with respect to soil water extraction should aid our understanding of how roots perform under field conditions and may assist our efforts to formulate the water uptake function of roots in dynamic simulation studies more realistically.The aim of the present investigation is to develop an approach that relates measured water uptake rates to relevant parameters of the root systems. This approach will be confined to situations where water uptake in a soil layer is not restricted by unfavorable soil conditions, such as in wet soil, by insufficient aeration and, in dry soil, by reduced water flow towards roots or by increased contact resistance (Herkelrath et al. 1977b). We will define a maximum water uptake rate WUmax that is neither soil-limited nor appreciably limited by the decreasing permeability of aging roots. This WUmax will be related to relevant root system parameters as they exist when WUmax is observed. Hence, water uptake by roots in a very wet, as well as in a dry soil, has been excluded from consideration.  相似文献

Objective To compare behavioral characteristics of induction and recovery in horses anesthetized with eight anesthetic drug protocols. Study design Randomized prospective experimental study. Animals Eight horses, 5.5 ± 2.4 years (mean ± SD) of age, and weighing 505 ± 31 kg. Methods After xylazine pre‐medication, each of eight horses was anesthetized on four occasions using one of eight different anesthetic induction protocols which incorporated various combinations of ketamine (KET), propofol (PRO), and thiopental (THIO): THIO 8 mg kg?1; THIO 6 mg kg?1 + PRO 0.5 mg kg?1; THIO 4 mg kg?1 + PRO 1 mg kg?1; THIO 2 mg kg?1 + PRO 1.5 mg kg?1; KET 2 mg kg?1; KET 1.5 mg kg?1 + PRO 0.5 mg kg?1; KET 1 mg kg?1 + PRO 1 mg kg?1; KET 0.5 mg kg?1 + PRO 1.5 mg kg?1. Quality of induction and recovery were scored from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent), and time taken to achieve lateral recumbency, first movement, sternal recumbency, and standing were evaluated. Results Time taken to achieve lateral recumbency after drug administration differed significantly (p < 0.0001) among the various combinations, being shortest in horses receiving THIO‐8 (mean ± SD, 0.5 ± 0.3 minutes) and longest in horses receiving KET‐2 (1.4 ± 0.2 minutes). The best scores for induction quality were associated with KET‐1.5 + PRO‐0.5, and the worst scores for induction quality were associated with KET‐2, although the difference was not significant. Time to first movement varied significantly among drug protocols (p = 0.0133), being shortest in horses receiving KET‐2 (12.7 ± 3.6 minutes) and longest in horses receiving THIO‐8 (29.9 ± 1.5 minutes). Horses receiving THIO‐8 made the greatest number of attempts to attain sternal posture (6.5 ± 4.7) and to stand (1.6 ± 0.8). Horses in the THIO‐8 treatment also received the poorest recovery scores (3.3 ± 1.0 and 3.0 ± 0.7 for sternal and standing postures, respectively). The best recovery scores were associated with combinations comprised mainly of propofol. Conclusions Combining propofol with either ketamine or thiopental modifies behaviors associated with use of the individual drugs. Clinical relevance Quality of early anesthesia recovery in horses may be improved by some combinations of propofol with either thiopental or ketamine.  相似文献

Legumes have been shown to increase P uptake of the following cereal, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of legume pre-crops and their residues on the growth, P uptake and size of soil P pools in the rhizosphere of the following wheat. Three grain legumes (faba bean, chickpea and white lupin) were grown until maturity in loamy sand soil with low P availability to which 80?mg P kg?1 was supplied. This pre-crop soil was then amended with legume residues or left un-amended and planted with wheat. The growth, P uptake and concentrations of P pools in the rhizosphere of the following wheat were measured 6?weeks after sowing. In a separate experiment, residue decomposition was measured over 42?days by determining soil CO2 release as well as available N and P. Decomposition rates were highest for chickpea residues and lowest for wheat residues. P release was greatest from white lupin residues and N release was greatest from faba bean residues, while wheat residues resulted in net N and P immobilisation. The growth of the following wheat was greater in legume pre-crop soil without residue than in soils with residue addition, while the reverse was true for plant P concentration. Among the legumes, faba bean had the strongest effect on growth, P uptake and concentrations of the rhizosphere P pools of the following wheat. Regardless of the pre-crop and residue treatment, wheat depleted the less labile pools residual P as well as NaOH-Pi and Po, with a stronger depletion of the organic pool. We conclude that although P in the added residues may become available during decomposition, the presence of the residues in the soil had a negative effect on the growth of the following wheat. Further, pre-crops or their residues had little effect on the size of P pools in the rhizosphere of wheat.  相似文献

ULTRASONOGRAPHIC ANATOMY OF THE NORMAL CANINE STIFLE   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Ultrasonographic examination of the normal canine stifle joint was performed to characterize its normal anatomy. Stifles of four normal adult dogs were imaged in sagittal and transverse planes and each anatomic structure visualized was recorded. Normal anatomic structures consistently seen included the patellar tendon, medial and lateral menisci, the cranial cruciate ligament and femoral condyle cartilage. The caudal cruciate ligament was visualized in two dogs. Collateral ligaments and meniscal ligaments were not visualized. The dogs were then euthanized and each stifle was isolated. Following removal of superficial muscles and skin, each stifle was imaged in a water bath to definitively identify the structures that had previously been visualized on the live dogs. The ultrasonographic appearance of the isolated stifle specimens was similar to that found in live dogs. The results of this study indicate that ultrasound can be used to image the normal anatomy of the canine stifle. The echogenicity of the patellar ligament, cruciate ligaments, menisci and articular cartilage was similar to that previously reported in equine stifles and human knees.  相似文献
