The efficacy of a paste formulation of the H+, K+, -ATPase inhibitor omeprazole was evaluated in standardbred racehorses for the treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers. Twenty standardbred racehorses in training, aged 2 to 9 years, were enrolled from 2 training centres in this field trial. Endoscopic examinations confirmed the presence of gastric ulcers in all horses, prior to allocation and treatment and on day 0. Lesions were scored on a scale of 0 to 3 (intact epithelium to extensive ulceration). Replicates were formed, based on training level and location. Within replicates, 1 horse was assigned to group 1 and 3 horses were assigned to group 2, randomly. Horses in group 1 were sham-dosed controls. Horses in group 2 were given omeprazole paste orally at 4 mg/kg bodyweight (BW)/day from day 0 to day 27 and 2 mg/kg BW/day of omeprazole paste orally from day 28 to day 57. Follow-up endoscopies were conducted on post treatment days 28 and 58 or 59. Physical examinations, including BWs, were conducted on all horses prior to treatment and on days 13 or 14, 28, 42 or 43, and 58 or 59. Horses treated with omeprazole had significantly (P < 0.01) more improvement in gastric lesion scores than did controls at day 28 and at study termination on days 58 or 59. All of the omeprazole-treated horses were improved relative to baseline ulcer score at both examinations, and 73.3% were healed (lesion score of 0) at both examinations. None of the controls improved at any point during the study. When the dose was reduced to 2 mg/kg BW, 80% of the horses showed no recurrences or worsening in gastric ulcers. It was concluded that omeprazole paste at 4 mg/kg BW orally, once daily is highly effective in healing gastric ulcers in standardbred racehorses in training and that a dose of 2 mg/kg BW orally, once daily, effectively prevents the recurrence of gastric ulcers in most horses. 相似文献

Soils in central Florida citrus production region are very sandy, hence are vulnerable to leaching of soluble nutrients and chemicals. The objective of this study was to develop nitrogen (N) and irrigation best management practices for citrus in sandy soils to maintain optimal crop yield and quality, and to minimize N leaching below the rootzone. A replicated plot experiment was conducted in a highly productive 20+ year-old ‘Hamlin’ orange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck] trees on ‘Cleopatra mandarin’ [(Citrus reticulata Blanco)] rootstock grove located on a well drained Tavares fine sand (hyperthermic, uncoated, Typic Quartzipsamments) in Highland County, FL. Nitrogen rates (112–280 kg ha−1 year−1) were applied as fertigation (FRT), water soluble granular (WSG), a combination of 50% FRT and 50% WSG, and controlled release fertilizer (CRF). Tensiometers were used to monitor the soil moisture content at various depths in the soil profile as basis to optimize irrigation scheduling. Fruit yield and quality and nutritional status of the trees were reported in a companion paper. Soil solution was sampled at 60, 120, and 240 cm depths under the tree canopy using suction lysimeters. Concentrations of NO3-N in the soil solution at 240 cm deep, which is an indicator of NO3-N leaching below the tree rootzone, generally remained below the maximum contaminant limit (MCL) for drinking water quality (10 mg L−1) in most samples across all N sources and rates, but for few exceptions. Total N in the fruit was strongly correlated with fruit load, thus, at a given N rate N removal by the fruit was lower during years of low fruit yield as compared to that during the years of high fruit yield. Furthermore, there was a strong linear relation between N and K in the fruit. This supports the need to maintain 1:1 ratio between the rates of N and K applications. In a high fruit production condition, the N in the fruit accounted for about 45% of the total N input on an annual basis. Fifteen percent of the total N input at 280 kg N ha−1 year−1 was not accounted for in the citrus N budget, which could be due to leaching loss. This estimate of potential leaching was very close to that predicted by LEACHM simulation model. The improved N and irrigation management practices developed in this study contributed to an improved N uptake efficiency and a reduction in N losses. 相似文献

Caspases play a central role in apoptosis, a well-studied pathway of programmed cell death. Other programs of death potentially involving necrosis and autophagy may exist, but their relation to apoptosis and mechanisms of regulation remains unclear. We define a new molecular pathway in which activation of the receptor-interacting protein (a serine-threonine kinase) and Jun amino-terminal kinase induced cell death with the morphology of autophagy. Autophagic death required the genes ATG7 and beclin 1 and was induced by caspase-8 inhibition. Clinical therapies involving caspase inhibitors may arrest apoptosis but also have the unanticipated effect of promoting autophagic cell death. 相似文献

Abstract Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is extremely sensitive to Al toxicity. Increasing Si concentration in solution has been reported to alleviate AI toxicity. In this investigation the effects of varying Si concentrations (700, 1400, and 2800 μM Si) on reactive Al (defined as Al reactive with aluminon during 10‐s reaction time, without acidification and heating) was studied in solutions containing either 50, 100 or 200 μM Al during 50 d of aging. An increase in Si concentration had negligible effects on the reactive Al in solutions with 50 or 100 μM Al. However, in solutions with 200 μM Al the reactive Al decreased by 6 to 15% with an increase in Si concentration from 0 to 2800 μM. The effects of either 700, 1400 or 2800 μM Si on root growth of Coker 208, Coker 315, DPL 90, McNair 235, Stoneville 506 and Tifcot 56 cotton cultivars were investigated in solutions containing either 0, 10, 20 or 40 μM Al with 500 μM Ca at pH 4.5. In solutions containing no Al, addition of 700 μM Si improved root growth by 69–87% in Coker 315, DPL 90 and McNair 235 cultivars but not in the other cultivars. In solutions containing 10 μM Al, an increase in Si concentration from 0 to 2800 μM improved the root growth by 15–17% in DPL 90 and McNair 235 cultivars only. An increase in Si additions failed to improve root growth of any of the cultivars in solutions with 20 or 40 μM Al. 相似文献

Compost amendment to agricultural soils has been reported to reduce disease incidence, conserve soil moisture, control weeds, or improve soil fertility. Application rate and placement of compost largely depends on the proposed beneficial effects and the rate may vary from 25 to 250 Mg ha?1 (N content up to 4 percent). Application of high rates of compost with high N or P levels may result in excessive leaching of nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate into the groundwater. Leaching could be a serious concern on the east coast of Florida with its inherent high annual rainfall, sandy soils and shallow water table. In this study, five composts (sugarcane filtercake, biosolids, and mixtures of municipal solid wastes and biosolids) were applied on the surface of an Oldsmar sand soil (in 7.5 cm diameter leaching columns) at 100 Mg ha?1 rate and leached with deionized water (300 ml day?1, for five days; equivalent to 34 cm rainfall). The concentrations of NO3-N, NH4-N, and PO4-P in leachate reached as high as 246, 29, and 7 mg L?1, respectively. The amount of N and P leached accounted for 3.3-15.8 percent of total N and 0.2-2.8 percent of total P in the compost. The leaching peaks of NO3-N occurred following the application of only 300-400 ml water (equivalent to 6.8-9.1 cm rainfall). 相似文献

Field evaluation of release and availability of nutrients and potentially toxic elements from composts is necessary to estimate their nutrient contribution to crops, potential effect on soil and environmental quality. A biosolids (BSD), a yard waste (YW), and a West Palm Beach cocompost (WPCC) were incubated under field conditions in a citrus grove on an Oldsmar fine sandy soil (sandy, siliceous, hyperthermic Alfic Arenic Haplaquods). The incubation columns and the soil underneath each column were sampled on 0, 240, and 360 days after incubation and analyzed for KCl extractable NH4-N and NO3-N, 0.5 M NaHCO3 extractable P, and Mehlich 3 extractable K, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, and microbial biomass. The total concentration and extractable proportion of each element greatly varied among the three organic amendments. Approximately 34-73% of K, 1-14% of Fe, 7-68% of Zn, 7-47% of Mn, and 2-34% of Cu in the three organic amendments were extractable by the Mehlich 3 reagent at the beginning of incubation. Incubation of these amendments under field conditions for a period of 1 yr increased the availability of N, P, K, and several micronutrients including Fe, Cu, Zn, and Mn. Microbial biomass-C and -P were markedly increased during the field incubation. However, the BSD, containing high total C and other nutrients, produced less microbial biomass-C than the two composts. The rapid increase in concentrations of available metals including Cu, Zn, and Mn in the BSD during the incubation may have adverse effects on microbial biomass growth and proliferation in this compost. A combination of BSD and YW improved conditions for the microbial biomass growth as evidenced by the increase in microbial biomass C and P of this combination during the course of incubation. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor enalapril would lower systemic arterial and glomerular capillary pressure and reduce the magnitude of renal injury in a canine model of renal insufficiency. ANIMALS: 18 adult dogs that had renal mass reduced by partial nephrectomy. PROCEDURE: After surgical reduction of renal mass and baseline measurements, dogs in 2 equal groups received either placebo (group 1) or enalapril (0.5 mg/kg, PO, q 12 h; group 2) for 6 months. RESULTS: Values for systemic mean arterial blood pressure determined by indirect and direct measurement after 3 and 6 months of treatment, respectively, were significantly lower in group 2 than in group 1. During treatment, monthly urine protein-to-creatinine ratios were consistently lower in group 2 than in group 1, although values were significantly different only at 3 months. At 6 months, significant reduction in glomerular capillary pressure in group 2 was detected, compared with group 1, but glomerular filtration rate in group 2 was not compromised. Glomerular hypertrophy, assessed by measurement of planar surface area of glomeruli, was similar in both groups. Glomerular and tubulointerstitial lesions were significantly less in group 2, compared with group 1. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Data suggest that inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme was effective in modulating progressive renal injury, which was associated with reduction of glomerular and systemic hypertension and proteinuria but not glomerular hypertrophy. Inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme may be effective for modulating progression of renal disease in dogs. 相似文献

Improving the precision in estimating the nitrogen (N) requirement for citrus trees on sandy soils is important for increasing
N efficiency by the trees and minimizing potential losses of N in commercial citrus production areas. In this study, representative
Florida soils were sampled from major citrus production areas and the electro-ultrafiltration (EUF) technique was used to
measure the concentrations of total EUF-extractable nitrogen (EUF-Nt), ammonium-N (EUF-NH4
+–N) and nitrate-N (EUF-NO3
––N). Available organic N (Norg) was calculated as: EUF-Nt–(NH4
+–N+NO3
––N). The N concentrations in the EUF extraction were greater than those by the KCl or CaCl2 method. The Norg fraction, estimated by the EUF method, varied from 4.4 to 40.8 mg kg–1 soil, equivalent to 10 to 91 kg N ha–1 (for the top 15 cm depth soil) and was positively correlated with the total soil N determined by the Kjeldahl method. The
presence of appreciable amounts of Norg in these soils indicates that these soils contain high proportions of the total soil N in easily mineralizable Norg forms. This study demonstrates that the EUF-extractable organic bound N must be considered in developing N fertilizer recommendations
for citrus.

The retention and transport of P by three horizon samples (A, E, and Bh) of a Spososol (Oldsmar sand: sandy, silicious, hyperthermic Alfic Arenic Haplaquods) were evaluated using a batch-equilibration and leaching column techniques with application of P in rates equivalent to 25 and 100 kg P ha-1. Adsorption coefficient (K) values followed the order: Bh > A > E. Adsorption of P by the E horizon soil sample was negligible (M = 4 μg g-1 soil) as compared to that of either A or Bh horizon samples, e.g., 303 and 479 μg g-1, respectively. The leaching column study with application of P equivalent to 100 kg ha-1 showed 39, 68, and 98% of applied P were leached from the Bh, A, and E horizons, respectively, with eight pore volumes of leachate. Elution curves showed the peak P elution at the second pore volume (equivalent to 3.7 cm of water addition). After leaching with eight pore volumes, the residual P in the soil was present primarily in non-occluded Fe and Al-P forms in the A and Bh horizons. 相似文献
