This study was conducted to evaluate the Salvia officinalis hydroalcoholic extract on fertility capacity and behavioral features in rats exposed to immobilization stress. Male rats were randomly divided into five groups; Control; Stressed rats; and Stressed rats received 50, 100 and/or 200 mg/kg bw S. officinalis hydroalcoholic extract. To induce stress, rats were immobilized for 49 days and received S. officinalis extract orally. On day 56, we analyzed behavioral tests and evaluated reproduction capacity by measuring LH, FSH, and testosterone. Sperm parameters such as motility, viability, and total count were also determined. Bodyweight changes were also calculated on day 56. Male rats from different groups were mated with healthy female rats. Data showed that the use of 100 and 200 mg/kg bw S. officinalis extract in stressed rats increased bodyweight gain and improved behavioral disorders compared to control‐matched groups (p < .05). Besides, administration of 100 and 200 mg/kg bw S. officinalis extract had the potential to improve sperm parameters and fertility capacity in stressed rats (p < .05). Decreased testosterone levels were blunted in the stressed rats that received plant extract coincided with the reduction of LH and FSH compared to control‐matched stressed rats (p < .05). We found neutral effects in stressed rats that received 50 mg/kg bw plant extract. Collectively, the hydroalcoholic extract of S. officinalis could improve the fertility capacity and behavioral features under stressful conditions in a dose‐dependent manner.  相似文献

Firmness is a primary measure of apple fruit texture, the key determinant of eating quality of apples. Despite the well developed understanding of the process of firmness loss in storage, there is very limited information concerning pre-harvest and at-harvest causes of the variation in fruit quality in the marketplace. The objective of the present study was to investigate the respective roles that the factors of time and intensity of crop thinning, fruit size and fruit dry matter concentration (DMC) each may have in determining fruit firmness of ‘Royal Gala’ apple at harvest and during storage. Loss of firmness during storage of all thinning treatments and of fruit size and DMC categories was described by a bilinear equation. Time of thinning did not influence any aspect of fruit softening during air storage at 0.5 °C. Comparing the crop loads, a lower crop load (100 fruit per tree) resulted in firmer fruit at harvest. The loss of firmness during storage associated with crop load occurred because fruit from the lowest crop load softened more rapidly during the second slow phase of softening. Fruit firmness was positively correlated with fruit size where larger fruit were slightly firmer than smaller fruit at harvest but not after storage. The softening profiles of different sized fruit were similar except for a class of extremely small fruit, which appeared to soften more rapidly during the second slow softening phase of storage. Both at-harvest and post-harvest fruit firmness were influenced by fruit DMC. Fruit firmness at harvest increased significantly as fruit DMC increased from 13% to above 16%. Despite having significantly different initial firmness, all fruit classes with DMC higher than 13% softened at a similar rate during both the initial rapid and second slow softening phases and the transition between the two phases occurred after the same time in storage. In contrast, fruit with very low DMC, less than 13%, had a greater rate of softening in the second phase. These results indicate that variation in fruit firmness at harvest and after storage is influenced by processes that affect and alter fruit DMC during fruit development. In this respect crop load control, which is used to improve fruit size, was also an important factor in altering fruit DMC, thereby affecting firmness at harvest and after storage. Furthermore, the effects of DMC on fruit firmness were independent of fruit size.  相似文献

Choosing appropriate plants for urban landscapes is vital to avoid potential financial and environmental losses that may occur if all selection parameters are not taken into account. A methodology has been developed to assist landscape architects, planting designers, and urban horticulturists in the plant selection process. Tehran has been picked as a case study due to its arid and semi-arid climate which poses more challenges in front of an expert. After grouping plants, selection parameters have been defined for each plant group. Plant species were comparatively graded for each parameter by a group of eight specialists. Analytical hierarchy process (AHP) technique and hierarchical cluster analysis have been utilized to find the most adaptable plant species for the area according to the main selection parameters of zone tolerance, urban conditions, esthetics, maintenance, growth characteristics, and specific features. Several new plants were ranked high in the final tables suggesting that the urban landscape of Tehran has a great potential to become more attractive, less allergic, and less costly, as well as consuming less water. Before introducing new plants to the urban environment, they should be experimented on in small numbers for several years to confirm that they will not change the ecology of the whole region through invasion or posing a threat to any local plant species.  相似文献

Breeding spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) specifically for organic production has been suggested by producers and researchers alike. To investigate the effects of management systems on selected spring wheat breeding line performance in multi-location tests in the northern Great Plains, we used a randomly derived population of 79 F6-derived recombinant inbred lines (RILs) from a cross between the Canadian hard red spring wheat cultivar AC Barrie and the CIMMYT derived cultivar Attila. The population, including the parents, was grown on conventionally and organically managed land in 12 environments over 3 years. Direct selection in each management system (10% selection intensity based on grain yield) resulted in three lines being retained in each management system, over the multi-location testing. Gains from 10% selection for grain yield in a ‘selection’ year were 3.4 times greater in conventional multi-site yield trials than in organically managed trials. Two lines (BA 05 and BA 36) ranked in the top 10% of both the conventional and organic selection trial of 2005, remained ranked 2nd and 1st, respectively, under conventional management in multi-site yield trials. However, these lines ranked 53rd and 21st, respectively, for grain yield in the multi-site organic yield trials. Selected lines were each yield stable within the management system in which they were selected. Following replicated multi-location yield trials, three lines from the population (BA 02, 29 and 58) ranked within the highest 10% yielding lines in both conventional and organic systems. The results of this study suggest that selection differences occur across multi-location tests, and that selection for grain yield in organic systems should be conducted within organic systems. It is evident, however, that data obtained from conventional yield trials also has some relevance towards breeding for organic environments.  相似文献

Chromium (Cr)-contaminated soils pose a great environmental risk, with high solubility and persistent leaching of Cr(VI). In this study, hydroxysulfate green rust (GRSO4), with the general formula Fe(II)4Fe(III)2(OH)12SO4·8H2O, was evaluated for its efficiency in Cr(VI) stabilization via Cr(VI) reduction to Cr(III) in four representative Cr(VI)-spiked soils. The initial concentrations of phosphate buffer-extractable Cr(VI) (Cr(VI)b) in soils 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 382.4, 575.9, 551.3, and 483.7 mg kg-1, respectively. Reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by structural Fe(II) (Fe(II)s) in GRSO4 in all studied soils was fast, wherein the application of GRSO4 markedly decreased the amount of Cr(VI)b at the Cr(VI)b/Fe(II)s stoichiometric mole ratio of 0.33. The kinetics of Cr(VI) reduction by GRSO4 could not be determined as this reaction coincided with the release of Cr(VI) from soil during the experiment. The concentration of Cr(VI)b decreased, as the Cr(VI)b/Fe(II)s ratio decreased from 0.46 to 0.20, generally to below 10 mg kg-1. Back-transformation of the generated Cr(III) was examined in the presence of manganese oxide birnessite at the birnessite/initial Cr(III) mole ratio of 4.5. The results of batch tests showed that only 5.2% of the initial Cr(III) was converted to Cr(VI) after two months, while under field capacity moisture conditions, less than 0.05% of the initial Cr(III) was oxidized to Cr(VI) after six months. The results illustrated that remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soils would be fast, successful, and irreversible with an appropriate quantity of fresh GRSO4.  相似文献

Antinociceptive effect of hydroalcoholic extract and essential oil of Zataria multiflora was studied using writhing, tail flick and formalin tests. In tail flick test, the hydroalcholic extract (500 mg/kg, i.p.) and the essential oil (0.3 ml/kg, i.p.) of the plant showed antinociceptive activity (P<0.05). Moreover, they showed antinociceptive activity in writhing and formalin tests.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between different body positions during recumbency on the cranial migration of epidurally injected methylene blue in canine cadavers. SAMPLE POPULATION: 21 fresh cadavers of clinically normal adult female mixed-breed dogs. PROCEDURE: Dogs were randomly assigned to the following 3 groups: dogs remaining in right lateral recumbency (n = 7), dogs rotated from left to right lateral recumbency (7), and dogs rotated from dorsal to right lateral recumbency (7). Each dog received an epidural injection of 0.05% methylene blue (0.1 mL/kg) at the lumbosacral space. A dorsal laminectomy of the vertebral column was made, and cranial extent of methylene blue in 4 quadrants (right lateral, left lateral, ventral, and dorsal) was determined by examining dura mater staining. RESULTS: No significant difference was found among groups in regard to body weight or body condition score. Epidural cranial migration of methylene blue in the right lateral quadrant was significantly greater in dogs that remained in right lateral recumbency than in dogs that were rotated from left to right lateral recumbency. No significant difference was found within groups for epidural cranial migration of methylene blue between each quadrant. No significant relationship was found between body weight or body condition score and epidural cranial migration of methylene blue. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Body positioning and amount of recumbency time influence cranial migration of epidurally injected methylene blue. If greater cranial migration of an epidurally administered drug is desired, placing the patient in lateral recumbency with the surgical site on the dependent side may precede surgery.  相似文献

It has become necessary to develop stands of fast growing endemic species in the Caspian forests because of their reduction in area and the domestic demand of timber processing industries in Iran. Acer velutinum, an en- demic species in Iran, is often planted in monocultures or in a mixture with other endemic species. Our study was con- ducted on A. velutinum planted in Berenjestanak (control plots) and Chaibagh (thinned plots) in northern Iran in 1991. A randomized sampling method with circular sampling plots of 100 m2 was used to measure diameter and height of trees. The results show that the diameter of trees in thinned stands was 19.98 cm and in the control stands 13.84 cm, while the mean heights were 18.33 and 17.46 m, respectively. The mean basal area in thinned stands was 30.74 m2 and in the control 15.70 m2 per ha. The results of Student's t tests indicate that there are significant differences at a probability level of 99.9% between the two variously treated stands in diameter (d), height (h), basal area, volume growth and the stabil- ity coefficient. We conclude that tending operations with suitable intensity in different time periods are recommended to obtain stable stands.  相似文献
