Female pistachio (Pistacia vera) trees were hand pollinated with pollen from three different male genotypes 0,1,2,3 and 4 d after anthesis. Results were measured by mature fruit set and by fluorescence microscopy of pollen germination and tube growth in the pistil. Maximum pollen tube growth and fruit set of split nuts was achieved following pollination within two days of anthesis. Three day old pistils supported pollen tube growth, but fruit set was low. Four day old pistils supported little pollen tube growth or fruit set. Significant differences were also apparent between pollen parents, with low pollen tube growth and fruit set following interspecific pollination with P. atlantica pollen. All pollen tubes were observed to penetrate chalazogamously, and parthenocarpic production of blank fruits occurred in both unpollinated and pollinated treatments. The results indicate that for optimum fruit production of pistachio, pollen transfer must be achieved within 2 d of anthesis and pollination by P. atlantica should be avoided.  相似文献

The toxicities of eight structurally different acaricidal compounds to six‐legged larvae (first motile stage) of three laboratory strains of the two‐spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, and the European red mite, Panonychus ulmi, were evaluated following spray application. The larvae of five field‐derived strains of T urticae originating from France, Italy, Brazil, California and Florida were also tested for their susceptibilities to discriminating concentrations of several acaricides resulting in 95% mortality when applied to the organophosphate‐resistant laboratory reference strain WI. The spray bioassay used was robust and gave repeatable results with a wide range of acaricidal compounds, irrespective of their mode of action (ovo‐larvicides or primarily acting on motile life stages). Compounds tested were abamectin, azocyclotin, chlorpyrifos, clofentezine, deltamethrin, fenpyroximate, hexythiazox and pyridaben. Larvae of one of the laboratory strains of T urticae, AK, originally collected in Japan in 1996 and maintained without further selection pressure, exhibited 2000‐ and >4000‐fold resistance to the mitochondrial electron transport inhibitors pyridaben and fenpyroximate, respectively. Another strain of T urticae, AU, obtained from Australia and maintained in the laboratory under selection with hexythiazox and clofentezine since 1987 showed >770‐ and >1000‐fold resistance to clofentezine and hexythiazox, respectively. The same resistance pattern was observed against larvae of a laboratory strain of P ulmi, CE, also selected with hexythiazox. Larvae of one of the field‐derived strains of T urticae, BR, showed a lower susceptibility to a number of compounds, whilst the others were susceptible to all compounds except the organophosphates. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

USDA-ARS scientists have made important contributions to the molecular genetic analysis of agriculturally important insects, and have been in the forefront of using this information for the development of new pest management strategies. Advances have been made in the identification and analysis of genetic systems involved in insect development, reproduction and behavior which enable the identification of new targets for control, as well as the development of highly specific insecticidal products. Other studies have been on the leading edge of developing gene transfer technology to better elucidate these biological processes though functional genomics and to develop new transgenic strains for biological control. Important contributions have also been made to the development and use of molecular markers and methodologies to identify and track insect populations. The use of molecular genetic technology and strategies will become increasingly important to pest management as genomic sequencing information becomes available from important pest insects, their targets and other associated organisms.  相似文献

This study presents three-point bending test results of Norway spruce clear wood specimens loaded on the radial-longitudinal plane in two different load cases. The tested samples were graded as resonance wood for instrument making and were characterised by narrow annual rings and relatively low density. The modulus of elasticity (MOE) and the corresponding modulus of rupture (MOR) are illustrated separately for the samples with straight grain and the group showing the specific growth pattern of indented rings (‘hazel growth’). With the longitudinal wood anatomical direction parallel to span width, the fibre deviation caused by the indents reduces MOE and MOR values, whereas a ‘reinforcing’ effect of the indents could be observed for the load case with span width parallel to the radial direction. Both aspects lead to a reduction in anisotropy for hazel-growth Norway spruce (anisotropy MOE: indented rings 11.6, straight grain 14.7, anisotropy MOR: indented rings 6.9, straight grain 8.9), which partly explains the exceptional position of this growth pattern for the construction of high-class musical instruments with outstanding mechanical and acoustical performance.  相似文献

Benzophenonehydrazone derivatives containing a mesylate or triflate substituent are known to exhibit insecticidal activity. In the present study, such substituents have been replaced by perhaloalkoxy groups. High levels of activity against lepidopteran pests were observed in greenhouse trials. For optimum activity, the substituents should be relatively small. In semi-field trials, however, none of the compounds tested showed sufficient persistence to warrant further development.  相似文献

A French strain of the tobacco aphid Myzus nicotianae Blackman (Homoptera: Aphididae), strain FR, showed high tolerance to imidacloprid in short-term (48-h) oral ingestion bioassays when compared to a susceptible reference strain of Myzus persicae, strain NS. The resulting tolerance factors were >50. Measures of the contact activity of imidacloprid by the FAO dip method failed to detect these high factors of tolerance. The tolerance factor was in general <10 when using the dip method. The resulting difference between tolerance factors could be attributed to a behavioural component to fitness between strain FR and strain NS as further experiments revealed. When measuring the effect of systemically applied imidacloprid on honeydew excretion, a 50% reduction occurred in both strain FR and strain NS at nearly the same concentration of imidacloprid, providing evidence for a similar antifeedant response in both strains. Starvation experiments revealed that the French strain was able to survive approximately 24 h longer than a reference laboratory strain of M. persicae. This result coincided with the fact that systemically applied imidacloprid showed the same aphicidal potential against strain FR after three days as against strain NS after two days, i.e. 24 h later. After rearing in the laboratory for six months the French strain of M. nicotianae lost its hardiness and also its apparent ability to tolerate imidacloprid. However, strain FR was a heterogeneous field strain and it is possible that a susceptible variant out-reproduced a more hardy variant. These findings indicate that the type of bioassay is very important when assessing aphid populations for resistance against the chloronicotinyl insecticide imidacloprid, because of its distinct mode of action. It is obvious that an aphid dip test, i.e. FAO dip test, produces more reliable results than the different kinds of short-term oral ingestion bioassays, because of the reversible behavioural changes induced by imidacloprid after oral uptake. Thus a short-term oral ingestion bioassay (≤48 h) is not recommended for precise detection of possible resistance of Myzus sp. to imidacloprid, although this mode of uptake for imidacloprid might be sometimes more realistic in terms of field behaviour. The ideal test to generate most accurate data would be a slightly longer (72-h) feeding bioassay, perhaps used in conjunction with a dip test. High seedling mortality during the establishment phase of cocoa has become a critical constraint to sustainable cocoa farming. The objective of this study was to develop varieties with higher seedling survival compared with cultivars currently recommended for planting in denuded regions. Thirty‐seven families composed into two sets of 18 (families from recommended clones) and 19 (families from recently introduced clones) were evaluated for field survival under full sunlight and dry weather conditions. Families differed significantly for vigour (increase in trunk cross‐sectional area, TCSA) and percentage of survived seedlings by the end of the dry weather conditions. Survival and vigour were significantly correlated in only one set of families. The contribution of general combining ability (GCA) to seedling survival was low to moderate. An Amelonado clone and clones from the Iquitos genetic group had negative GCA estimates for both increase in TCSA and survival. Clones of Scavina origin had the most positive contribution to survival. The key outcome of the study was that cocoa families with higher establishment success can be obtained from the currently available germplasm.  相似文献

Seed priming is a method to improve germination and seedling establishment under stress conditions. The effect of seed priming in chemical solutions such as urea and KNO3, on protein and proline content, germination, and seedling growth responses of four maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids under drought and salt stress conditions was studied in a controlled environment in 2010. Treatments included stress type and intensity at five levels: moderate drought (MD), severe drought (SD), moderate salt (MS), severe salt (SS), and control (C1, without stress), three seed priming types including water (C2, as control), KNO3, and urea (as chemical priming), and four maize hybrids including Maxima, SC704, Zola, and 307. The results showed that the highest germination percentage (Ger %), germination rate (GR), seedling length (SL), radical length (RL), and seedling to radical length ratio (S/R) were achieved in no stress treatments and most proline content in SD treatment. Urea priming led to more Ger%, GR, and SL compared to other primers and treatment under KNO3 priming resulted in higher RL compared to other primers. Chemical priming had no effect on S/R and proline content. Also, in terms of most traits, no difference was found among the four hybrids. Results showed that salt stress could affect GR and RL more than the drought stress. Drought stress affected germination percentage and S/R more than the salt stress. Both stresses decreased all measured parameters, except protein and proline content which were increased remarkably, and more under drought compared to salt stress. Based on proline content, hybrid 304 appeared to be more resistant to stress than other hybrids. Generally, KNO3 and urea alleviated effects of both stresses and led to increased germination and seedling growth as well as the root length. Therefore, priming could be recommended for enhancing maize growth responses under stressful conditions.  相似文献
