Amyloid angiopathy with cerebral hemorrhage and senile plaque in aged dogs

Amyloid angiopathy with cerebral hemorrhage and senile plaques was found in the brain of aged dogs. In all 9 cases examined, 13 to 19 years old, 6 males and 3 females, amyloid deposits were observed mostly in the wall of cerebral arterioles and capillaries showed hyaline degeneration. The accumulation of amyloid fibrils measuring about 10 nm in diameter was seen in the cerebral vessel wall by electron microscopy. The cerebral hemorrhage was observed in 6 of 9 dogs and 2 of them showed massive hemorrhage. The hemorrhagic foci were sometimes closely contact with the vessels involved in amyloid angiopathy. In addition, senile plaques being classified into 2 types were found in the cerebral cortex of 3 dogs. The first type was characterized by the accumulation of degenerative neurites and often contained granular argyrophilic material. The second type had a well-defined amyloid core with neuritic halo. Amyloid deposits were also found in or around intestinal vessel walls of 3 dogs. The amyloid deposited in the cerebral vessels, senile plaques and intestinal vessels showed characteristic green birefringence under the polarized light even after potassium permanganate treatment.     

Structure-physicochemical function relationships of soybean beta-conglycinin heterotrimers

We purified four single molecular species of beta-conglycinin heterotrimers consisting of the alpha and beta subunits or the alpha' and beta subunits from mutant soybean cultivars lacking the alpha or alpha' subunit, respectively, and examined their structural features and physicochemical functions. The extent of the hydrophobicities of the heterotrimers was related to the number of the alpha or alpha' subunit. The thermal stabilities of the heterotrimers were mainly conferred by the subunit which had lower thermal stability. Solubilities at low ionic strength (mu = 0.08) of the heterotrimers containing the alpha or alpha' subunit were very similar to those of the alpha and alpha' homotrimers, respectively. Emulsifying abilities and heat-induced associations of the heterotrimers containing one beta subunit were similar to those of the alpha or alpha' homotrimer, whereas those of the heterotrimers containing two beta subunits were similar to those of the beta homotrimer.     

评价大米储藏品质的炊饭特性指标的研究

提出了评价大米储藏品质的炊饭特性新指标——光透过率差。实验证明，随着大米品质的劣化，光透过率差明显变小。以此指标为主，结合原有的加热吸水率和ｐＨ值，对因生霉和陈化引起的大米储藏品质的变化，都能较好地进行评价。同时对影响这些指标稳定的实验因素也进行了探讨。     

Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction of turmeric (Curcuma longa)

Turmeric oil was extracted from turmeric (Curcuma longa) with supercritical carbon dioxide in a semicontinuous-flow extractor. Extraction rate was measured as a function of pressure, temperature, flow rate, and particle size. The extraction rate increased with an increase in CO(2) flow rate and with a reduction of particle size. The effect of pressure and temperature on turmeric extraction suggested the use of higher pressure and lower temperature at which solvent density is greater and thus the solubility of the oil in the solvent is greater in the range of 313-333 K and 20-40 MPa. The major components ( approximately 60%) of the extracted oil were identified as turmerone and ar-turmerone by GC-MS.     

Quantitative structure—activity relationships of light-dependent herbicidal 4-pyridone-3-carboxanilide derivatives II. Substituent effects of anilide and pyridone moieties

The variations in the light-dependent herbicidal activity against Echinochloa oryzicola of a number of 4-pyridone-3-carboxanilides with various substituents on the anilide and pyridone rings have been examined by use of physicochemical substituent parameters and regression analysis. The effects of substituents of the anilide ring were such that the activity was related parabolically not only with the substituent hydrophobicity (π) but also with the steric bulk parameter (E_s) of the bulkier ortho substituent. The effect of substituents at the 1-position of the pyridone ring was analysed with steric(STERIMOL L and B₅) and electronic(γ₁) parameters. That of substituents at the 5-position of the pyridone ring was explained by a parabolic function of a steric (MR) parameter. Analyses of the activity of 105 analogs confirmed that our previous selection of a candidate compound in this series for field trials was indeed appropriate in terms of physicochemical substituent effects.
