UNUSUAL DISC HERNIATION IN A DOG

Unusual disc herniation was identified in a dog. Disc herniation was considered unusual because of its displacement into the vertebral endplate of the adjoining vertebra. Unusual disc herniation in this dog was compared with Schmorl's node in humans.     

Mitotic instability in Aspergillus nidulans caused by the fungicides iprodione,procymidone and vinclozolin

The fungicides iprodione, procymidone and vinclozolin were found to increase greatly the frequency of mitotic recombination in diploid colonies of Aspergillus niduluns. Although generally more potent, these fungicides do not appear to differ in their activity from members of a previously suggested ?aromatic hydrocarbon group’? with which they should be classified in this context.     

Effect of growth inhibitors on three ornamental species

Foliar sprays of the growth inhibitors sodium 2, 3:4, 6-di-O-isopropylidine-α L-xylo-2-hexulofuranosonate (dikegulac-sodium), N-[2,4-dimethyl-5-] [tri-fluromethyl) sulfonyl] amino] phenyl] acetamide (mefluidide); methyl-2-chloro-9-hydroxyfluorene-9-carboxylate (chlorflurenol) and 2,3 dihydro-5-6-diphenyl-1,4-oxathiin (UBI-P293) were applied to Ligustrum japonicum, Pyracantha coccinea and Osmanthus heterophylla. Results indicate that growth inhibitors differ in their capacity to inhibit vegetative growth, and the level of inhibition and plant phytotoxicity depend on both the chemical and the rate of concentration.     

Technique for Handling Cover Slips Used in Cell Culture Systems

A stainless steel, grooved rack was designed to handle large numbers of coverslips used in cell cultures. The rack separated and held the coverslips through the washing process and subsequent manipulations. Slips washed by this method allowed consistently good cell sheets to grow with no signs of cytotoxicity to the cultures.     

A survey of sheep dip usage in Scotland in 1978

A survey of sheep dipping in Scotland in 1978 showed that about 42 tonnes of organophosphorus and 17 tonnes of organochlorine insecticides were used to control ectoparasites. Information is presented about their pattern of use and about the disposal of surplus sheep dip and the empty containers. Six river pollution incidents involving sheep dips in 1978 are recorded. The main geographical areas affected by headfly (Hydrotaea irritans Fall.) and the measures taken against them are noted.     

The toxicity of benomyl and some related 2-substituted benzimidazoles to the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris

Benzimidazole and its 2-amino analogue were non-toxic to Lumbricus terrestris when administered orally. The fungicidal 2-substituted benzimidazoles (benomyl, carben-dazim, fuberidazole and thiabendazole) and l-(benzimidazol-2-yl)-3-butylurea were highly and equally toxic. The equitoxicity of compounds with widely differing substituent groups suggests a common mode of action—the benzimidazole moiety being the active part of the molecule. It is likely that there is a common mode of action for benzimidazole analogues for both fungicidal activity and earthworm toxicity. There was no detectable effect on the cholinesterase levels of earthworms poisoned by benomyl. But it is confirmed that the cholinesterase inhibitory activity of benomyl in vitro is due to formation of butyl isocyanate.
