Estimating variation in grain mineral concentration and bioavailability in relation to grain yield and the year of cultivar
release is important for breeding wheat with increased content of bioavailable minerals. The grain yield and yield components,
grain phytate concentration, and concentration and bioavailability of minerals (zinc Zn, iron Fe and calcium Ca) in wheat
grains were estimated in 40 wheat cultivars released in Punjab (Pakistan) during the last five decades. Mean grain Zn and
Ca concentrations in current-cultivars were significantly lower (≥14%) than in obsolete cultivars released during the Green
Revolution (1965–1976). Much of this variation was related to increased grain weight in current-cultivars. There was a positive
correlation among minerals (r = 0.39 or higher, n = 40) and minerals with phytate in wheat grains (r = 0.38 or higher, n = 40). The tested cultivars varied widely in grain yield and grain phytate-to-mineral molar ratios (phytate:mineral). Compared
to obsolete cultivars, the current-cultivars had a higher phytate:mineral ratio in grains, indicating poor bioavailability
of minerals to humans. The study revealed a non-significant relationship between grain yield and phytate:mineral ratios in
grains. Therefore, breeding for lower phytate:mineral ratios in wheat grains can ensure increased mineral bioavailability
without significant reduction in the yield potential. Future breeding should be focused on developing new genotypes suitable
for mineral biofortification and with increased mineral bioavailability in grains. 相似文献

Blackspot, caused by Didymella pinodes (Berk. & Blox.)Vestergr., is one of the most important diseases of field pea, causing significant reduction in seed yield and quality in southern Australia and in other parts of the world. Development of resistant germplasm has been slow because of the low level of resistance found in the available germplasm, poor reliability of screening methods and the polygenic nature of inheritance. Crosses were made between agronomically suitable lines and resistant germplasm from different sources. Their progeny were advanced through the single seed descent method and single plants were selected at F4/F5. The F4/F5 derived lines were screened against blackspot in the field under disease pressure and evaluated for grain yield at multilocations over 2 years. Despite the low level of resistance in the parental germplasm, the level of resistance has increased significantly in the new germplasm. Many of the resistant lines were late and low yielding, but lines with higher resistance and early flowering and high yield potential were also identified indicating that the disease resistance, adaptation and yield potential can be combined. However, the resistance identified in this study is only partial and suitable agronomic practices may need to be supplemented to minimise the yield loss and enhance the benefits of this partial resistance. 相似文献

This study was conducted to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for drought tolerance in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) by association mapping using a simple sequence repeat (SSR)-marker-based diversity research set. Genotypic data for 98 SSR marker loci on ten chromosomes were used for the association analysis. The experiment was conducted under control (well-watered) and drought stress conditions, and the phenotypic values of 23 morphological traits were recorded. Drought tolerance was assessed by using a leaf drying score as a parameter of the tolerance/susceptibility: scores were assigned on a scale from 1 (most tolerant) to 9 (most susceptible). Under the control conditions, 17 QTLs associated with 12 traits were identified on chromosomes 1, 2, 4, 8, 9, and 10, with ?Log10 (P) ranging from 2.5 to 7.6 and explaining 9.5–57.5 % of the total phenotypic variance for the traits. Under the drought stress conditions, nine QTLs associated with 8 traits were identified on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, and 10 that explained 9–61.2 % of the total phenotypic variance for the traits, with ?Log10 (P) ranging from 2.5 to 3.5. QTLs for some traits were detected only under the drought stress condition, suggesting that these traits are important in drought tolerance. Vitamin A deficiency in humans is a widespread health problem. Quality protein maize (QPM) is a popular food rich in lysine and tryptophan, but poor in provitamin A (proA). Here, we report the improvement of an elite QPM inbred, HKI1128Q for proA using marker‐assisted introgression of crtRB1‐favourable allele. HKI1128 was one of the parental lines of three popular hybrids in India and was converted to QPM in our earlier programme. Severe segregation distortion for crtRB1 was observed in BC1F1, BC2F1 and BC2F2. Background selection by 100 SSRs revealed mean recovery of 91.07% recurrent parent genome varying from 88.78% to 93.88%. Across years, introgressed progenies possessed higher mean β‐carotene (BC: 9.22 µg/g), β‐cryptoxanthin (BCX: 3.05 µg/g) and provitamin A (proA: 10.75 µg/g) compared to HKI1128Q (BC: 2.26 µg/g, BCX: 2.26 µg/g and proA: 3.38 µg/g). High concentration of essential amino acids, viz. lysine (mean: 0.303%) and tryptophan (0.080%) in endosperm, was also retained. Multi‐year evaluation showed that introgressed progenies possessed similar grain yield (1,759–1,879 kg/ha) with HKI1128Q (1,778 kg/ha). An experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh in Old
Brahmaputra Alluvial Flood Plain (AEZ-9) during December 2005 to May 2006 to examine the root growth of different rice cultivars
under various establishment methods. This experiment comprised two sets of treatment (i) three methods of planting viz., dry
direct seeding, wet direct seeding and transplanting, and (ii) six rice cultivars, two inbreds viz., BRRI Dhan 28 and BRRI
Dhan 29, two hybrids, viz., Aalok 6201 and Sonarbangla 1 and two local improved cultivar viz., Habigonj IV and Habigonj VIII.
Cultivars had more remarkable effect on different root parameters i.e. number of roots, root length, root length density,
root biomass, root weight ratio and root shoot ratio of hybrid, inbred and local improved rice cultivars than method of planting.
BRRI Dhan 28 performed the best for most of the parameters. At harvest, BRRI Dhan 29 showed the best rooting behavior among
the cultivars. For both stages hybrid rice cultivars showed intermediate and local improved cultivars performed lower in rooting
behavior. Direct seeding method performed better than transplanting method for most of the root parameters but wet direct
seeding and dry direct seeding methods were identical. Interaction effect between method of planting and cultivar in most
of the root parameters were insignificant. But, BRRI Dhan 28 and BRRI Dhan 29 under wet direct seeding method and Sonarbanngla
1 under transplanting method showed the best rooting performance among the other combinations. 相似文献
