Fifteen experiments testing seven sets of genotypes under irrigated non-stress and drought stress situations were conducted from 2004 to 2006 with the objective to study the effect of different severity levels of drought on tolerant and susceptible advanced breeding lines, current varieties, and traditional and improved donors, and to study the effect of selection for high early vigor on yield. With the onset of drought, a yield reduction due to a decrease in biomass was observed in both susceptible and tolerant lines. However, after an initial reduction in yield, tolerant lines were able to sustain a yield loss more effectively than susceptible lines by better maintenance of biomass and higher harvest index. Under intermittent drought stress, genotypes with the ability to maintain higher biomass, reflected in terms of high early vigor recorded 3 wk after transplanting, recorded higher grain yield than genotypes with low early vigor. Lines with high early vigor yielded higher under both irrigated non-stress and intermittent drought stress situations. Under intermittent stress, plants with high vigor, low vigor, or random plants with high or low vigor coming from tolerant × susceptible crosses yielded higher than did the plants with the same vigor coming from susceptible × susceptible crosses. Under both irrigated non-stress and intermittent drought stress situations, early vigor showed significant genetic correlation with grain yield and could be included as an efficient selection criterion to improve yield in the lowlands. 相似文献

In the present study, 39 endophytic bacteria were isolated from different crops with main focus on maize roots and seeds. Endophytes were screened for drought stress tolerance, plant growth promoting (PGP) traits and antifungal activity. Out of 39 isolates, 32 could show drought tolerance up to–1.02 matric potential (MPa) and exhibited most of the plant growth promoting traits. But, only five isolates could show antagonistic activity against plant fungal pathogens. Based on the results, 10 promising isolates namely FTR, NFTR, FMZR9, FMZR2, MZ30V92, MRC12, MRC31, MRC33, MRC41 and MRR2 were selected and identified using biochemical and 16S rDNA gene sequencing as Pseudomonas aeruginosa (strains FTR and NFTR), Pseudomonas monteilii (strain FMZR2), Pseudomonas putida (strain FMZR9), Acitenobacter brumalii (strain MZ30V92), Enterobacter asburiae (strain MRC12), Sinorhizobium meliloti (strain MRC31), Pseudomonas thivervalensis (strain MRC33), Pseudomonas fulva (strain MRC41), and Pseudomonas lini (strain MRR2). Further, at–1.02 MPa all the 10 isolates showed PGP traits, and 3 isolates (FTR, NFTR and MRC12) showed antifungal activity. Haematological studies were conducted on 10 clinically normal water buffalo calves to determine leucocytic responses to Escherichia coli endotoxin, prednisolone and dexamethasone. Intravenous injection of 10 micrograms endotoxin induced minimal decreases in leucocyte numbers, whereas 20, 50 and 100 micrograms produced a marked leucopenia within one hour. Moderate to marked leucopenia, neutropenia and lymphopenia persisted for three to 14 hours. Significant rebound neutrophilia was evident at six to eight hours after inoculation in calves given only 10 and 20 micrograms. Intramuscular injection of prednisolone (100 mg) and dexamethasone (5 mg) produced increases in total leucocyte counts and neutrophil numbers within two hours. Moderate to marked leucocytosis and neutrophilia persisted for eight to 24 hours. Lymphocyte response was unlike that in other species in that lymphopenia was not a consistent feature of the corticosteroid response. A transient monocytosis was seen following administration of prednisolone but not of dexamethasone, while eosinopenia and basopenia developed in both cases. In conclusion, endotoxin and corticosteroid induced changes in total and differential leucocyte counts in water buffalo were largely similar to those seen in cattle. 相似文献
