We present a brief introduction to FT‐Raman spectroscopy and examples of its use in cereal science for readers not familiar with Raman spectroscopy. We illustrate the use of FT‐Raman spectroscopy as an analytical tool to measure the degree of chemical modification of chemically modified starches and as a technique to determine conformational and structural changes in plant proteins under different environmental conditions. We briefly describe other applications of Raman spectroscopy in cereal science.  相似文献

The current standard of care treatment for canine lymphoma is a multi-agent, CHOP-based chemotherapy protocol. Single agent doxorubicin (DOX) is less burdensome; however, multi-agent chemotherapy protocols are often superior. The recently approved drug rabacfosadine (RAB, Tanovea) provides an attractive option for combination therapy with DOX, as both drugs demonstrate efficacy against lymphoma and possess different mechanisms of action. A previous study evaluating alternating RAB/DOX reported an overall response rate (ORR) of 84%, with a median progression-free survival time (PFS) of 194 days. The aim of this prospective trial was to evaluate the same protocol in an additional population of dogs. Fifty-nine dogs with treatment naïve lymphoma were enrolled. RAB (1.0 mg/kg IV) was alternated with DOX (30 mg/m2 IV) every 21 days for up to six total treatments (3 cycles). Response assessment and adverse event (AE) evaluation were performed every 21 days using VCOG criteria. The ORR was 93% (79% CR, 14% PR). The median time to maximal response was 21.5 days; median PFS was 199 days. T cell immunophenotype and lack of treatment response were predictive of inferior outcomes. AEs were mostly gastrointestinal. Six dogs developed presumed or confirmed pulmonary fibrosis; four were grade 5. One dog experienced grade 3 extravasation injury with RAB that resolved with supportive treatment. These data mirror those of the previously reported RAB/DOX study, and support the finding that alternating RAB/DOX is a reasonable treatment option for canine lymphoma.  相似文献

The basis of modelling yield loss and population dynamics relations of potato cyst nematodes is that both are strongly density-dependent. Potato cyst nematodes (PCN; Globodera pallida and G. rostochiensis) are particularly suitable for analysing such relationships because they have only one generation per year, potato is their only field host, the juvenile nematodes within the egg are very durable (up to 20 years persistence), and they hatch mainly in response to specific chemicals exuded from host roots. Small populations increase the most, up to 50-fold, when a potato crop is grown. Multiplication rates decrease as the population density increases because damage decreases root system size and increases competition so that very large populations may actually be decreased when potatoes are grown. The newly formed eggs have a ‘half-life’ of c.two years when non-host, rotational crops are being grown. Control is achieved largely by the use of rotation, the application of nematicidal chemicals, and growing resistant cultivars. As rotations are shortened, so PCN populations will be increased, and crop damage becomes more likely. Thresholds for damage vary with both soil type (greatest on sandy soils) and potato cultivar. Cultivars differ in their tolerance of PCN damage depending on how vigorously they grow, on their root sensitivity to damage from the PCN juveniles which invade close to root tips, on cultivar resistance which decreases the parasitic effect by reducing the numbers of developing PCN females, and on various environmental factors such as the amounts of fertiliser applied. The dependence of the yield-loss relationship on population density, soil type and cultivar effects has been described in a simple equation and assessed using field-trial data. Effects on yield are described in proportion to the PCN-free yield but the addition of information on expected yield (in tonnes ha−1) in the absence of PCN renders this equation predictive. Nematicides are widely applied to infestations of potato cyst nematodes, both to prevent the crop from being damaged and to prevent population increase which could hazard the next potato crop in the rotation, but they are generally more effective at preventing the former than the latter. A complex equation has also been developed to model the population dynamics of PCN. This equation incorporates a factor for host-crop growth and tolerance (from the yield-loss equation) and also the effects of host resistance. This latter is particularly relevant to G. pallida, where all the resistance currently available is determined by minor genes and hence is ‘quantitative’ or ‘partial’. Effects of rotation and of nematicides can also be incorporated into this model. To provide a realistic prediction also requires accurate information on PCN population densities, species composition and distributions, and rates of PCN population decline between potato crops.  相似文献

During the last 50 years substantial tracts of the Italian badlands have been reclaimed for arable cultivation. It is a process that involves modelling the degraded clay landscape with bulldozers, often resulting in steep, unstable slopes. This work investigates the stability of reclaimed land in these erosion susceptible environments. Aggregate stability is used to assess the soil's erodibility with the aim of determining those physicochemical properties that govern the potential for erosion. Regression analysis demonstrates that the most significant variables in determining soil erodibility are the percentage of organic matter and the exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP). Threshold values of 1–2 per cent organic matter and 15 per cent ESP are presented above and below which, respectively, the soils attain a degree of stability. Reclaimed land is on the borderline of these thresholds and therefore represents a potential erosion hazard. However, the stability of reclaimed land was significantly higher than that of the badland parent material, ascribable to a decline in the ESP. The results are supported by a series of soil crust experiments using simulated rainfall in the laboratory. This investigation has implications for land management and landscape conservation. If the organic matter content of reclaimed land is maintained and the ESP reduced, then, when used in combination with other soil conservation techniques, erosion will be minimized. However, this implies that the badland landscape, and its diverse ecology and morphology, may have been permanently lost to agriculture and, as such, should be recognized as a threatened Mediterranean landscape. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Probiotic administration is associated with the enhancement of host resistance to environmental and nutritional stressors, improving survival and growth rates. This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus cereus toyoi on growth performance, innate immune responses and gut morphology of two trout species feeding a commercial diet high in soybean meal. A commercial probiotic (4.2 × 109 CFU g?1 of additive) was supplemented to the experimental diets at 0% (control), 0.03% (P1; 6 × 103 CFU g?1 of diet) or 0.06% (P2; 1.5 × 106 CFU g?1 of diet) and fed to brown trout (Salmo trutta) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) for 9 and 20 weeks respectively. Rainbow trout showed significantly better growth performance than brown trout, regardless of the dietary treatment. No effect of dietary probiotic supplementation was detected on growth performance, body composition or innate immune parameters (plasma lysozyme, alternative complement and peroxidase activities). In both species, after 9 weeks, intestinal lamina propria and submucosa were widened, with increased presence of inflammatory cells, significantly higher in groups fed probiotics. This inflammatory process, with villi and enterocytes noticeably damaged compared with the control group, was more pronounced in brown trout. Under the current trial conditions, the B. subtilis + B. cereus toyoi had no positive impact in either trout species, on the contrary a harmful effect was observed.  相似文献

As the most popular baitfish in the USA, the golden shiner is subjected to frequent handling and transportation episodes prior to retail marketing and recreational use. Considerable mortality and economic loss can occur during handling and transportation. Limited information is available concerning stress responses, such as cortisol secretion, and mobilization of nutrients, such as zinc and ascorbic acid, during handling and transportation of this fish species. Therefore, two concurrent experiments were performed to characterize cortisol responses, as well as changes in whole‐body zinc and visceral ascorbic acid concentrations, after harvesting, grading, and transporting by ground or air. During ground transportation, fish were sampled immediately after being subjected to the following conditions: seined from a commercial pond in Lonoke, Arkansas (I), released into vats from the loading truck (II), graded by bar grader (III), loaded onto a hauling truck (IV) and after transport for 10 h to Brenham, Texas (V). Fish were also sampled before and after air freight shipment. Whole‐body cortisol appeared to be a reliable endocrine marker for stress response of golden shiner subjected to handling and transportation. Grading by bar grader was the most stressful event in the process of handling and transporting golden shiners, resulting in a significantly elevated whole‐body cortisol concentration of 107 ng/g tissue, compared to concentrations of 6.3, 32.3, 15.7, and 30.4 ng/g tissue, for stages I, II, IV, and V, respectively. A significant increase in whole‐body cortisol concentration was also observed after air transportation of 22 h duration. No significant reductions in whole‐body zinc or visceral ascorbic acid concentrations were observed.  相似文献
