The local electronic structures of the surface regions of tungsten, tungsten carbide, and platinum have been compared. The species of prairie dog most commonly found in the pet trade is the black-tailed prairie dog, Cynomus ludovicianus. This pilot study evaluated protection of an equine autogenous bacterin-toxoid vaccine against Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis infection. Twenty-four BALB/c mice were inoculated with two doses of bacterin-toxoid vaccine or two injections of a placebo. Clinical, microbiologic, and pathologic outcomes were assessed after intradermal infection with one of two equine-origin C. pseudotuberculosis strains. Mice receiving bacterin-toxoid from fast-growing C. pseudotuberculosis showed significant protection from challenge infection, as evidenced by a higher survival rate, fewer gross and histopathologic lesions, and lower bacterial levels on culture. Successful protection via a vaccine against equine internal abscesses might provide supplementary management options against an important, potentially fatal disease. 相似文献

Abstract: A 5‐year‐old, spayed female, mixed‐breed dog with persistent elliptocytosis was evaluated at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at Kansas State University. The elliptocytosis was asymptomatic and was detected during the evaluation of lameness. When subjected to shear stress in an ektacytometer, the dog's erythrocytes had reduced cellular deformability and erythrocyte membranes had decreased mechanical stability. Analysis of erythrocyte membrane spectrin by nondenaturing gel electrophoresis revealed an increased amount of spectrin dimers, indicating a defect in spectrin self‐association. DNA analysis detected a β‐spectrin mutation in codon 2110 in which threonine was replaced by methionine. This mutation likely altered the molecular structure of the erythrocyte membrane, leading to impaired spectrin self‐association and elliptocyte formation. 相似文献

Osseous‐associated cervical spondylomyelopathy in dogs is characterized by both static and dynamic spinal cord compression; however, standard MRI methods only assess static compression. In humans with cervical spondylotic myelopathy, kinematic MRI is commonly used to diagnose dynamic spinal cord compressions. The purpose of this prospective, analytical study was to evaluate kinematic MRI as a method for characterizing the dynamic component of osseous‐associated cervical spondylomyelopathy in dogs. We hypothesized that kinematic MRI would allow visualization of spinal cord compressions that were not identified with standard imaging. Twelve client‐owned dogs with osseous‐associated cervical spondylomyelopathy were enrolled. After standard MRI confirmed a diagnosis of osseous‐associated cervical spondylomyelopathy, a positioning device was used to perform additional MRI sequences with the cervical vertebral column flexed and extended. Morphologic and morphometric (spinal cord height, intervertebral disc width, spinal cord width, vertebral canal height, and spinal cord area) assessments were recorded for images acquired with neutral, flexion, and extension imaging. A total of 25 compressions were seen with neutral positioning, while extension identified 32 compressions. There was a significant association between extension positioning and presence of a compressive lesion at C4‐C5 (p = 0.02). Extension was also associated with a change in the most severe site of compression in four out of 12 (33%) dogs. None of the patients deteriorated neurologically after kinematic imaging. We concluded that kinematic MRI is a feasible method for evaluating dogs with osseous‐associated cervical spondylomyelopathy, and can reveal new compressions not seen with neutral positioning. 相似文献

Pronephric and splenic involvements in erythropoiesis and in stress-induced hematological response by goldfish,Carassius auratus, were examined under conditions of minimal stress and following transient (3h) temperature-induced elevation of O2 demand and transient (3h) exposure to hypoxia. Although hemoglobin content and red cell numbers were little affected, the ontogenic composition of the circulating erythrocyte population was significantly altered by both types of respiratory challenge and also by the stresses associated with capture, air exposure during transfer and intraperitoneal administration of label. Juvenile cell numbers increased sharply while mature erythrocyte abundances declined. Consistent with this, [3H] methylthymidine-labeled cell numbers rose in both spleen and pronephros following imposition of stress. Splenic erythropoietic activity was modest relative to that of the pronephros. Our observations point to a readily triggered response involving: [1] release of cells reservoired in the spleen and pronephros, [2] increased erythropoiesis and [3] karyorrhexis. We suggest that while the magnitude of response may depend on the quality and magnitude of the imposed stress, its central features are essentially constant. 相似文献
