Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) is a highly lethal Lagovirus, family Caliciviridae, that threatens European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Although a related virus severely affects hares, cross-species infection was only recently described for new variant RHDV in Cape hares (Lepus capensis mediterraneus). We sequenced two strains from dead Iberian hares (Lepus granatensis) collected in the 1990s in Portugal. Clinical signs were compatible with a Lagovirus infection. Phylogenetic analysis of the complete capsid gene positioned them in the RHDV genogroup that circulated on the Iberian Peninsula at that time. This is the earliest evidence of RHDV affecting a species other than European rabbits. 相似文献

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are single-stranded noncoding RNAs of 19 to 25 nucleotides that function as gene regulators and as a host cell defense against both RNA and DNA viruses. We provide evidence for a physiological role of the miRNA-silencing machinery in controlling HIV-1 replication. Type III RNAses Dicer and Drosha, responsible for miRNA processing, inhibited virus replication both in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from HIV-1-infected donors and in latently infected cells. In turn, HIV-1 actively suppressed the expression of the polycistronic miRNA cluster miR-17/92. This suppression was found to be required for efficient viral replication and was dependent on the histone acetyltransferase Tat cofactor PCAF. Our results highlight the involvement of the miRNA-silencing pathway in HIV-1 replication and latency. 相似文献

Trichoderma ATCC 20476 based biofungicides have been marketed continuously on a small scale for 20 years. A more recently developed application for these biofungicides is the treatment of strawberries against the gray mold Botrytis cinerea. That application is examined in terms of Lockwood's criteria for ethics in biological control. Natural killer (NK) cells are lymphocytes of the innate immune system that are involved in the early defenses against foreign cells, as well as autologous cells undergoing various forms of stress, such as microbial infection or tumor transformation. NK cell activation is controlled by a dynamic balance between complementary and antagonistic pathways that are initiated upon interaction with potential target cells. NK cells express an array of activating cell surface receptors that can trigger cytolytic programs, as well as cytokine or chemokine secretion. Some of these activating cell surface receptors initiate protein tyrosine kinase (PTK)-dependent pathways through noncovalent associations with transmembrane signaling adaptors that harbor intracytoplasmic ITAMs (immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motifs). Additional cell surface receptors that are not directly coupled to ITAMs also participate in NK cell activation. These include NKG2D, which is noncovalently associated to the DAP10 transmembrane signaling adaptor, as well as integrins and cytokine receptors. NK cells also express cell surface inhibitory receptors that antagonize activating pathways through protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs). These inhibitory cell surface receptors are characterized by intracytoplasmic ITIMs (immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibition motifs). The tyrosine-phosphorylation status of several signaling components that are substrates for both PTKs and PTPs is thus key to the propagation of the NK cell effector pathways. Nonresonant manipulation of nuclear spins can probe large volumes of sample situated in inhomogeneous fields outside a magnet, a geometry suitable for mobile sensors for the inspection of roads, buildings, and geological formations. However, the interference by Earth's magnetic field causes rapid decay of the signal within a few milliseconds for protons and is detrimental to this method. Here we describe a technique to suppress the effects of Earth's field by using adiabatic rotations and sudden switching of the applied fields. We observed hundreds of spin echo signals lasting for more than 600 milliseconds and accurately measured the relaxation times of a liquid sample. 相似文献

Species diversity and seasonal abundance of Collembola in turfgrass ecosystems of North America 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In North America, lawns are the most widely used plantings in urban areas. However, despite the ubiquity and ecological roles of turfgrass soil arthropods, many aspects of their composition and diversity have been neglected. We investigated assemblages of Collembola and their seasonal fluctuations in a newly established lawn and a 10-year old lawn located in Québec City, Canada. Collembola were sampled every month from May to October in 2003 and 2004 by extracting individuals from soil cores using a modified Berlese funnel. A total of 21 species representing 17 genera and nine families were identified. Four species are new records for the province of Quebec: Brachystomella parvula, Mesaphorura simplex, Isotomodes productus, and Sphaeridia pumilis. Turfgrass supports mainly three cosmopolitan species from the Isotomidae family, which represent 73.5% of all Collembola collected during the survey: Parisotoma notabilis, Isotoma viridis, and Cryptopygus thermophilus. Collembola were twice more abundant at the newly established site, but there were minor differences in species diversity between sites and years. No clear patterns of seasonal relative abundance were observed for the whole Collembola populations, as well as for the three dominant species. Turfgrass ecosystem provides a suitable habitat for epedaphic and hemiedaphic Collembola, such as the Isotomidae, most likely because turfgrass mowing and natural leaf, stem and root replacement produces large amounts of decaying organic matter. 相似文献

The co‐culture of juvenile sea cucumber Holothuria scabra (Jaeger), or ‘sandfish’, with juvenile blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris (Stimpson) was tested by growing groups in co‐culture and monoculture for 3 weeks in tanks with enriched sand substratum. Feed was supplied on trays, accessible only to shrimp. Survival of shrimp and sandfish was high in all treatments (73–100%). Growth of shrimp did not differ between monoculture and co‐culture, but sandfish grew significantly slower in co‐culture (P=0.03), although their sand burying and surface foraging were apparently unaffected by shrimp (P=0.76). However, shrimp increased the levels of total ammonia‐N in tanks, which related inversely with sandfish growth (P=0.04). Conversely, sandfish did not appear to lower the water quality for shrimp culture. While sandfish bioturbate sediments and eat organic deposits, the juveniles did not significantly reduce the organic content of sand in tanks. Co‐culturing juveniles of the two species in earthen ponds appears feasible, with no detriment to shrimp production, presenting a cost‐effective method for growing sandfish to larger sizes for restocking. These findings underpin further studies to test the viability of commercial co‐culture of sandfish with blue shrimp at later stages in the production cycle of shrimp. 相似文献

Maca tuber meal is used in fish diet formulations in Andean trout culture and knowledge of its effects on fish growth is paramount to healthy human food production. In the first experiment with rainbow trout alevins (0.096±0.002 g), starter diets were offered from first feeding until 15 weeks. We formulated high protein content (~60%) semi‐purified starter diets supplemented with 0%, 5%, 10%, or 15% maca tuber meal (control, M‐5, M‐10, and M‐15 respectively). The second feeding trial was conducted with juveniles (1.56±0.02 g) fed one of three diets (control, M‐15, and commercial) for 8 weeks. In the first experiment, fish fed M‐10 and M‐15 diets exhibited significantly higher growth rates than the other dietary groups. Survival was significantly improved in the groups fed diets supplemented with maca tuber meal (60.0–69.2%) in comparison with the group fed a control diet (21.7%). The second experiment showed a higher growth rate in the M‐15 group compared with the control and a commercial diet fed group. Leucocyte numbers were increased by dietary supplementation of maca tuber meal. The findings of the present study suggest that a maca tuber meal inclusion at least 5% improves growth rate, feed utilization, immunity by increased leucocyte number, and survival of rainbow trout alevins and juveniles. 相似文献
