An assessment of the efficacy and safety of selenium and cobalt included in an anthelmintic for sheep 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A trial was devised to assess whether the administration of selenium and cobalt together with the anthelmintic mebendazole (Ovitelmin S&C) was safe and could improve the supplies of selenium and cobalt for adult sheep fed a whole grain diet, low in both elements, which produced a steady decrease in blood glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) and plasma vitamin B12 concentrations. Ovitelmin S&C, when given orally in a single dose as a suspension containing 0.34 mg selenium/ml, and 0.44 mg cobalt/ml (to provide 0.11 mg selenium and 0.15 mg cobalt/kg liveweight) significantly increased the GSHPx activity in blood. After a second dose given 28 days later the rate of change increased from 2.5 to 3.5 u/g haemoglobin/day. The responses in GSHPx were similar for a preparation which contained twice the concentration of selenium. Ovitelmin S&C increased the concentration of vitamin B12 in the plasma by about 1000 pg/ml for four to seven days after each dose and the increases were similar to those observed in sheep treated with an Ovitelmin preparation containing 45 times more cobalt (providing 6.7 mg cobalt/kg liveweight). After 63 days, liver vitamin B12 concentrations were 43 per cent higher in the cobalt treated than in the untreated groups (P less than 0.01) with no differences among the groups given cobalt. Neither adverse reactions nor signs of toxicity followed the administration of Ovitelmin S&C or Ovitelmin containing the higher concentrations of selenium and cobalt. 相似文献

The estimates of the needs of cattle for macro-elements vary widely between the different committees, most variation being seen in the values for calcium and phosphorus and between those of United Kingdom Agricultural Research Council and other published systems. The main factors responsible are the values adopted for the absorbability of calcium in the diet and for the maintenance requirements of phosphorus.Agricultural Research Council have adopted a value of 0.68 to convert net into dietary calcium requirements. This value represents the maximum efficiency of absorption of dietary calcium and was derived from balance trials. Other systems have derived a figure based on values from radioactive studies which rarely exceed 0.45. Agricultural Research Council used a figure of 12 mg kg?1 liveweight day?1 for the minimum maintenance value of phosphorus. This value has subsequently been shown to apply only to situations where dietary P is absorbed with high efficiency (0.70–0.80). For other situations maintenance requirements increase as the absorbability of dietary P decreases. For instance, the maintenance requirements of adult cattle increases to 20 mg kg?1 liveweight day?1, a value close to those used by other systems.At present there is insufficient information on which to arrive at a scientifically based margin of safety to cover variation in the availability of macro-elements between diets and in the efficiency of absorption amongst animals. 相似文献

The performance of growing lambs dosed daily for 12 weeks with 2500 Trichostrongylus vitrinus larvae (I) or given no larvae (control, C) was compared at two levels of phosphorus intake; 2.75 gP/kg dry matter (normal, NP) and 1.88 pgP/kg dry matter (low, LP). Both low phosphorus and T vitrinus infection reduced dry matter intake and growth rate and the combined effect of low phosphorus and infection were additive. Plasma hypophosphataemia (less than 60 mg per litre) occurred in groups CLP, ILP and INP from week 3, the values gradually returning to normal levels in INP lambs by the end of the trial. T vitrinus infection did not depress plasma phosphorus concentration below that seen in the low phosphorus controls. Both low phosphorus intake and T vitrinus infection reduced the density and mineralisation of bone, the most severely affected bones occurring in groups ILP lambs. T vitrinus infection reduced the content and concentration of phosphorus in the rumen and the effect was greater at the lower intake of phosphorus. Infection also reduced the proportion of phosphorus in the rumen liquid phase. The number of T vitrinus recovered from the intestine was higher and villous atrophy more extensive in lambs from group ILP. A combination of droperidol and fentanyl produces qualitatively similar pharmacologic effects in dogs and primates. Unlike the dog, however, primates did not appear to respond to auditory stimuli. As a result of the analgesic and sedative or tranquil state produced in primates, the animals were easily handled and tolerant of painful stimuli. The principal desirable features of the combination were high analgesic and sedative potency and a rapid onset of action following intramuscular administration. Seventy-two Rambouillet ewes were fed one of two different levels of energy and protein during gestation to determine the effects of maternal undernutrition on growth and development in their offspring. Levels of energy and protein for the two groups of ewes were: 70% of National Research Council (NRC) requirements 30 d prior to breeding and the first 100 d of gestation and then alfalfa hay fed at 70% of the average consumed by group 2, and 100% of NRC requirements 30 d prior to breeding and throughout gestation. Dissection data from the leg and muscle characteristics were recorded for each lamb. Neither dissected muscle and fat percentages nor proximate analyses of dissected muscles was influenced by ewe undernutrition during early pregnancy. However, the reduced conception rate, increased embryonic/fetal mortality, decreased birth weights and increased lamb mortality resulted in a severe reduction in kilograms of lamb per ewe bred. Feeding ewes 70% of NRC requirements during gestation resulted in lambs with heavier semitendinosus muscle weights, larger muscle fiber diameters and shorter sarcomere lengths than in lambs from adequately fed ewes. No influence of ewe diet, birth type or sex was observed for proportions of muscle fiber type (beta R, alpha R or alpha W). Despite much success in the control of mastitis in dairy cattle, intramammary infection with Streptococcus uberis remains a threat to herd health. This organism is a frequent cause of mastitis worldwide. Recent advances in the ability to genetically manipulate this bacterium, coupled to the determination of a representative genome sequence have already enabled the investigation of certain aspects of disease pathogenesis. Further use of such technology coupled to reliable models of disease and post-genomic analysis will permit the elucidation of further interactions between pathogen and host. This additional information can be usefully targeted at identification of candidates for inclusion in effective vaccines. Weaning is often stressful for piglets and accompanied by morphological, histological, microbial, and immunological changes along the digestive tract. Dietary nucleotides are bioactive compounds which have the potential to diminish weaning-associated challenges. The experiment was carried out with 5 litters each of 7 pigs (mixed sex), weaned at 20 d of age. One baseline pig per litter was slaughtered at d 0. The remaining 30 pigs were housed individually and randomly allocated to 2 dietary treatments: the control diet or the control diet supplemented with a mixture of nucleotides. Measurements of growth performance traits included ADFI, ADG, G:F, and BW. At d 17, fresh fecal samples were taken to determine bacterial numbers. On d 19 and 20, pigs were slaughtered and blood samples were analyzed for plasma immunoglobulins and intestinal samples were assessed for morphological traits. Digesta from the jejunum and cecum were collected for analysis of the microbiome. The ADFI was greater in the nucleotide treatment compared with the control treatment (P < 0.05), but ADG, G:F, and BW did not differ between treatments. Plasma IgA concentrations increased with age and were greater in the nucleotide (P < 0.05) compared with the control group. There were no treatment differences in plasma IgG and IgM, gut morphology, or intestinal and fecal bacterial counts. Supplemental nucleotides may increase ADFI but without having any impact on growth performance of the pigs. Greater plasma IgA concentrations indicate that adding nucleotides in the weaning diet supported humoral immunity. However, there was no effect of dietary nucleotide supplementation on the composition of the bacterial community in parts of the small and large intestine. Further research is warranted before the use of nucleotide as a feed additive in pig diet can be recommended. 相似文献
