Summary As organic farming refrains from high and chemical inputs it needs varieties better adapted to organic conditions to improve
the yield stability and quality of crops. In order to make genebank accessions more accessible for the utilisation in organic
breeding programmes, a participatory research project with farmers was carried out in 2002 and 2003. From the Dutch genebank
collection 37 onion accessions, divided into five different groups (according to their market use), were selected and planted
at a commercial organic farm. Farmer participation in characterisation and evaluation of the material resulted in including
additional plant traits for genebank characterisation as well as new selection criteria for breeding. It also provided researchers
insight into how organic farmers evaluate and value certain plant traits. Variation for important properties was found within
and between the five groups. To establish base populations, the farmers, in collaboration with the researchers, selected the
best genotypes within the five groups of onion accessions. The new base populations may be exploited in order to achieve better-adapted

Very large trees, arbitrarily defined as those over 70 cm diameter above buttresses, account for a major portion of the above-ground biomass in neotropical rain forests. Owing to the scarcity of individuals of a given species and the difficulty of accurate measurement, there are few species-level data on the growth, mortality, and abundance of species that regularly reach emergent status. We report such data for very large individuals from old-growth tropical wet forest at the La Selva Biological Station in the Atlantic lowlands of the Republic of Costa Rica. The landscape-scale abundance of all species reaching over 70 cm diameter was assessed using 515 0.01-ha quadrats located at grid points in a 500 ha area of old-growth forest. In the total sample of 2301 stems 10 cm or more in diameter, very large individuals accounted for 2% of the stems, 23% of the basal area, and 27% of the estimated above-ground biomass. Growth and survival for five species that regularly attain emergent status were measured in a 150 ha area within the 500 ha plot. Survival of 282 very large individuals of the five species was measured over 6 years. The mean annual mortality rate of the total sample was only 0.6% year−1. Mean annual diameter growth increments varied from 1.9 to 5.2 mm year−1 among species, and were negatively correlated with diameter in four of the five species. For a sample of 193 individuals measured over 7 years, growth almost exactly equalled losses in basal area and biomass due to mortality. Because all of these species are regularly recruiting new trees into the over 70 cm diameter class, the amount of biomass in the large-individual size class is increasing over the 150 ha old-growth study area. Historic disturbance and/or current climatic change are hypothesized to account for the increase. We identify lack of standard diameter measurement criteria, and small and potentially unrepresentative plot locations as two problems in assessing the role of very large trees in other neotropical forests. Future studies should sample larger areas; this will increase the generality of the conclusions and will make possible a species-level comparison of the ecology of very large tropical trees. 相似文献

Trunk circumferences and canopy diameters of Prosopis glandulosa, P. chilensis and P. alba, and soil nitrogen under and between the trees were measured in a seven-year-old plantation at the University of California,
Riverside. P. glandulosa had the smallest biomass of the three species. However, the nitrogen concentration of the soil under P. glandulosa was higher than under the other two species. Presumably more nitrogen is cycled through the leaves of this species rather
than invested in wood production, where it would be sequestered. The soil nitrogen accumulation under P. glandulosa was significantly higher (total and subsurface) than that measured in soil taken between trees. The soil nitrogen content
under P. chilensis and P. alba was not significantly different than that between the trees. These results indicate that the choice of woody legume in an
agroforestry system will depend on its intended use. The most efficient nutrient cycling is not necessarily associated with

In the western United States, many native riparian forests are declining downstream from dams and diversions, primarily due to a lack of successful regeneration of native species. Conceptual models have been described that incorporate stream flow characteristics that promote successful regeneration of western riparian Populus seedlings. However, these models need to be calibrated for additional species and specific stream characteristics. In this study, we examined the growth and survival of two dominant Sonoran desert riparian tree species, a native Salix gooddingii, and an exotic, Tamarix chinensis, to simulated water table declines at rates of 0, 1, 2, and 4 cm/day. Salix seedlings performed best in the 0 cm/day treatment in which the soil was saturated and showed decreasing survival and growth with increasing rates of water table decline. Root-to-shoot ratios were high for Salix, but root elongation rates were low with an emphasis on lateral root development. This root growth pattern may be an adaptation to habitat where Salix typically grows, near the stream channel where the water table is shallow but the likelihood of flood scour is high. Lateral root development may help to protect Salix seedlings from late season flood scour. Tamarix seedlings showed consistently high survival across all treatments and had the greatest growth in the 0 and 1 cm/day treatments. Tamarix seedlings had greater root elongation rates in response to water table decline relative to the control, with the greatest elongation in the 1 cm/day treatment. Greater root elongation rates and higher drought tolerance allowed Tamarix seedlings to persist in dry soils where Salix seedlings died. Differences in growth and survival of these two species in response to water table decline will need to be incorporated into management practices to promote successful native riparian tree regeneration. 相似文献

Comparative analysis of photosynthetic light environments within the crowns of juvenile rain forest trees 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Irradiances within the crowns of saplings of two tropical tree species were simultaneously compared in primary rain forest in Costa Rica. The species examined, Minquartia guianensis Aubl., a relatively slow-growing, canopy species, and Pithecellobium pedicellare (DC) Benth., a less-tolerant, emergent species, have different crown and leaf display patterns. Crown light environments were assessed by placing arrays of quantum sensors among leaves and recording at 5-s intervals for seven days with microloggers. Median total daily quantum flux densities for saplings of both species were less than 2% of full sun and did not differ significantly. More than 90% of the measurements within the crowns of these saplings were less than 25 micromol m(-2) s(-1). Spatial variability of photon flux densities within sapling crowns was similar for the two species despite differences in leaf display patterns. In saplings of both species, photon flux densities varied significantly over the relatively short distances within crowns and from day to day. Height growth of both species was significantly correlated with total daily photon flux densities and with percentage of full sun. However, only the tolerant species, Minquartia, showed a significant correlation between diameter growth and crown light environment. 相似文献

Two-year-old ponderosa pine seedlings (Pinus ponderosa Laws.) were exposed to episodic O(3) concentrations in open-top chambers for two consecutive growing seasons (June through September of 1990 and 1991). Near the end of the second season of O(3) exposure, gas exchange was measured on needles of surviving flushes at saturating CO(2) and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). Both photosynthetic capacity (A(sat)) and stomatal conductance to water vapor (g(wv)) declined linearly with needle age but differences within a flush were also found. Gas exchange rates of needles from the base of the current-year flush were significantly lower than those of needles from the top of the flush, even though age differences between needles were negligible. Although most measurements were conducted at saturating CO(2), similar patterns of gas exchange were also found at 350 micro mol mol(-1) CO(2), indicating that photosynthesis of needles at the bottom of the flush was more strongly affected by O(3) than that of needles at the top of the flush, even though the potential for O(3) uptake was probably less in needles at the bottom of the flush because of reduced stomatal conductance. Carboxylation efficiency (deltaA/deltaC(i)), the linear slope of the A/C(i) response, was highly correlated with A(sat), varying with needle age, needle position in the flush and O(3) exposure, but the magnitude of the reductions was greater than for A(sat). We conclude that susceptibility to O(3) damage among needles of an individual seedling varies not only with needle age but also with needle position, and that reductions in photosynthetic capacity may not be directly attributable to increased uptake of the pollutant.
