ObjectiveTo evaluate the effect of preanesthetic, intravenous (IV) amino acids on body temperature of anesthetized healthy dogs.Study designRandomized, experimental, crossover study.AnimalsEight mixed-breed dogs approximately 2 years of age weighing 20.7 ± 2.1 kg.MethodsDogs received 10% amino acid solution (AA) or 0.9% saline (SA) IV at 5 mL kg−1 over 60 minutes. Body temperature (BT) was recorded at 5 minute intervals during infusions. Dogs were then anesthetized with sevoflurane for 90 minutes. BT was recorded at 5 minute intervals during anesthesia. Jugular blood samples were analyzed for pH, glucose, creatinine, and lactate concentrations at baseline, after infusion, after anesthesia and after 24 hours.ResultsBT at conclusion of infusion decreased -0.34 ± 0.42 °C in group AA and -0.40 ± 0.38 °C in group SA and was not different between groups (p = 0.072). BT decreased 2.72 ± 0.37 °C in group AA and 2.88 ± 0.26 °C in group SA after anesthesia and was different between groups (p < 0.05). Creatinine in group AA was increased immediately after infusion (p < 0.0001) and at 24 hours (p < 0.0001). There were no differences between groups for other parameters. Values for both groups were never outside the clinical reference ranges.Conclusions and clinical relevanceIn healthy dogs, preanesthetic IV infusion of amino acids attenuated heat loss compared to controls, however, the amount attenuated may not be clinically useful. Further studies are warranted to determine if nutrient-induced thermogenesis is beneficial to dogs undergoing anesthesia.  相似文献

Shade is a mechanism to reduce heat load providing cattle with an environment supportive of their welfare needs. Although heat stress has been extensively reviewed, researched, and addressed in dairy production systems, it has not been investigated in the same manner in the beef cattle supply chain. Like all animals, beef cattle are susceptible to heat stress if they are unable to dissipate heat during times of elevated ambient temperatures. There are many factors that impact heat stress susceptibility in beef cattle throughout the different supply chain sectors, many of which relate to the production system, that is, availability of shade, microclimate of environment, and nutrition management. The results from studies evaluating the effects of shade on production and welfare are difficult to compare due to variation in structural design, construction materials used, height, shape, and area of shade provided. Additionally, depending on operation location, shade may or may not be beneficial during all times of the year, which can influence the decision to make shade a permanent part of management systems. Shade has been shown to lessen the physiologic response of cattle to heat stress. Shaded cattle exhibit lower respiration rates, body temperatures, and panting scores compared with unshaded cattle in weather that increases the risk of heat stress. Results from studies investigating the provision of shade indicate that cattle seek shade in hot weather. The impact of shade on behavioral patterns is inconsistent in the current body of research, with some studies indicating that shade provision impacts behavior and other studies reporting no difference between shaded and unshaded groups. Analysis of performance and carcass characteristics across feedlot studies demonstrated that shaded cattle had increased ADG, improved feed efficiency, HCW, and dressing percentage when compared with cattle without shade. Despite the documented benefits of shade, current industry statistics, although severely limited in scope, indicate low shade implementation rates in feedlots and data in other supply chain sectors do not exist. Industry guidelines and third-party on-farm certification programs articulate the critical need for protection from extreme weather but are not consistent in providing specific recommendations and requirements. Future efforts should include: updated economic analyses of cost vs. benefit of shade implementation, exploration of producer perspectives and needs relative to shade, consideration of shade impacts in the cow–calf and slaughter plant segments of the supply chain, and integration of indicators of affective (mental) state and preference in research studies to enhance the holistic assessment of cattle welfare.  相似文献

The influence of copper(II) on the bridging reactions between (+)-catechin and glyoxylic acid was studied in a white wine-like medium. When the reaction was performed in darkness at 45 degrees C, copper(II) increased the maximum levels of carboxymethine-linked (+)-catechin dimer and xanthylium cation pigment as monitored by high-performance liquid chromatography/photodiode array detection (HPLC/DAD) and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS). At 10 degrees C, similar results were observed except that the xanthene intermediate was monitored and found to also increase in concentration at higher copper(II) concentrations. The kinetics for the formation of these species suggested that copper(II) accelerated the bridging of two (+)-catechin units by glyoxylic acid. The acid group of glyoxylic acid allowed copper(II) to influence this reaction, as no copper(II) enhancement was observed when acetaldehyde was used in place of glyoxylic acid.  相似文献

Ten laboratories analyzed 9 pairs of blind duplicate raw milk samples for total solids. A direct forced air oven method (4 h at 100 degrees C) and a modification of the AOAC predry method (16.032) were used. Preliminary evaluation of the modified AOAC method indicated that blank determinations were necessary. Total solids content ranged from 12.0 to 14.6%. Average repeatability standard deviations (Sr) of the direct forced air oven and modified AOAC methods were 0.019 and 0.017, respectively. Average reproducibility standard deviations (SR) of the direct forced air oven and the modified AOAC methods were 0.042 and 0.047, respectively. Average repeatability relative standard deviations (RSDr) for the direct forced air oven and the modified AOAC methods were 0.149 and 0.136%, respectively; average reproducibility relative standard deviations (RSDR) were 0.327 and 0.370%, respectively. Mean repeatability values (r) and reproducibility values (R) were 0.054 and 0.118 for the direct forced air oven method and 0.049 and 0.133 for the modified AOAC method, respectively. The mean test result of the direct forced air oven method (12.7293%) was comparable to that for the modified AOAC method (12.7273%). The modification of AOAC method 16.032 and the direct forced air oven method have been approved interim official first action.  相似文献

Mineral deposits on the martian surface can elucidate ancient environmental conditions on the planet. Opaline silica deposits (as much as 91 weight percent SiO2) have been found in association with volcanic materials by the Mars rover Spirit. The deposits are present both as light-toned soils and as bedrock. We interpret these materials to have formed under hydrothermal conditions and therefore to be strong indicators of a former aqueous environment. This discovery is important for understanding the past habitability of Mars because hydrothermal environments on Earth support thriving microbial ecosystems.  相似文献

Human T-cell leukemia viruses (HTLV) are closely associated with some human T-cell leukemias and lymphomas. A unique 3' region of the HTLV genome is believed to be involved in HTLV-induced cellular transformation, although the function of this region has yet to be determined. A subgenomic messenger RNA transcribed from this region of HTLV has now been characterized. These results provide direct evidence for the expression of a novel gene in HTLV.  相似文献
