We assessed the non-target effects of a habitat management system (‘push–pull’) on maize stemborer specialist natural enemy activity and soil Collembola. Two study sites in western Kenya were sampled. There were two treatments at each site, maize monocrop and ‘push–pull’. The latter comprised an intercrop of maize and Desmodium, Desmodium uncinatum Jacq., with Napier grass, Pennisetum purpureum (Schumach), as a trap crop planted around the edge of the plot (spaced 1 m from main crop). Trichogramma spp. were recovered from stemborer eggs while Cotesia sesamiae and Cotesia flavipes were recovered from stemborer larvae, and Dentichasmias busseolae from pupae. Mean number of eggs parasitized was significantly higher in the maize monocrop than in the ‘push–pull’ plots however proportions parasitized did not differ between the two systems. The number of larvae and pupae parasitized and dead from causes other than parasitism similarly did not differ between cropping systems. Proportions of larvae and pupae parasitized were significantly higher in the ‘push–pull’ than in the monocrop plots, indicating that the activity of larval and pupal parasitoids was enhanced. C. sesamiae female wasps were attracted to the volatiles from Desmodium flowers but not those from the leaves in a four-arm olfactometer bioassay. A total of 1530 individual Collembola in seven families were recovered from the plots. The ‘push-pull’ strategy did not have any significant effect on Collembola abundance and dominance. BACKGROUND: The insect growth regulator pyriproxyfen has provided effective control of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci Gennadius in many countries. Here, whether or not fitness costs were associated with pyriproxyfen resistance in a laboratory‐selected resistant strain (QC02‐R) of the B biotype was determined. RESULTS: Mortality caused by pyriproxyfen and fitness traits over time were measured in unselected and selected hybrid strains, which were created by crossing individuals of the resistant strain with individuals of a susceptible strain. Fitness costs were not associated with resistance in QC02‐R, as mortality caused by pyriproxyfen did not increase over time in unselected hybrid strains and fitness traits were similar in unselected and selected hybrid strains. Using a new method to examine the inheritance of resistance, based on data from fitness cost experiments, it was estimated that pyriproxyfen resistance is controlled by two loci in the QC02‐R strain. CONCLUSION: The lack of fitness costs associated with pyriproxyfen resistance could promote the evolution of resistance in field populations with similar traits to QC02‐R. The varying (local) parameter(s) in site index models can be treated as fixed or random. Two primary subject-specific approaches to height modeling, the dummy variable method (fixed individual effects) and the mixed model method (random individual effects), were compared using Chapman–Richards type models fitted to second-rotation loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) data from a designed experiment. For height prediction of new growth series, tested on our validation subset data, the mixed model provides a new (local) parameter prediction method (termed as mixed predictor), which generally performed better than the traditional method of recovering local parameters (the least squares (LS) predictor we used). However, using the LS predictor, both the dummy variable estimation method and mixed model estimation showed almost identical prediction results. With multiple pairs of height–age measurements, no big difference was found in empirical site index prediction between the LS and mixed predictor. Theoretically, one main advantage of the mixed model approach is the ability of its mixed predictor to predict several local parameters using a single height–age pair. In model terrestrial ecosystems maintained for three plant generations at elevated concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide, increases in photosynthetically fixed carbon were allocated below ground, raising concentrations of dissolved organic carbon in soil. These effects were then transmitted up the decomposer food chain. Soil microbial biomass was unaffected, but the composition of soil fungal species changed, with increases in rates of cellulose decomposition. There were also changes in the abundance and species composition of Collembola, fungal-feeding arthropods. These results have implications for long-term feedback processes in soil ecosystems that are subject to rising global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. 相似文献

对20个大丽轮枝菌菌株的致病性进行了测定和RAPD指纹扩增,完成了供试菌株致病类群与其RAPD指纹组间的相关性分析。结果表明,根据20个菌株对5个棉花品种的抗感反应及其平均病情指数分为4种不同的致病类群;用10个随机引物对20个菌株进行RAPD-PCR扩增,产生92条DNA带(其中51条为多态带);用计算机进行聚类分析,20个供试菌株聚类为9个RAPD指纹组。相关性分析表明,致病类群与RAPD指纹组无明显相关性;但与部分单引物扩增的RAPD谱型有明显对应关系,如引物OPC-15随机扩增的RAPD谱型,除致病类群VG3的菌株外,其余致病类群均有对应的RAPD指纹谱带;其它引物(OPC-05,OPM-13,OPA-02,OPL-02)也有相似的结果。 相似文献

To assess the risk of transferring alien, invasive New Zealand mudsnails (NZMS) Potamopyrgus antipodarum with shipments of live rainbow or steelhead trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, we conducted laboratory trials to quantify and determine the volitional ingestion of snails from the bottom of laboratory tanks. Approximately, 2000 snails were placed on the bottom of a test tank and groups of 10 fish were added to each tank. After 48 h, the fish were removed, euthanized and the snails in the gastrointestinal tract were counted, and the proportion of snails remaining in each tank was measured. We found that both rainbow trout and steelhead consumed NZMS, but rainbow trout consumed nearly twice the number of snails that were consumed by steelhead trout. Feeding fish a maintenance diet increased the total consumption of snails by fish to an average of 64.5 snails per rainbow trout. Our study suggests that management strategies that depurate fish without feed for 48 h to reduce the risk of transfer of NZMS are not viable in preventing the transport of snails if rearing waters contain snails. 相似文献

Presence of coastal aquaculture activities in marine landscapes is growing with impacts on the wild fish that share these habitats. However, it is difficult to disentangle subsequent ecological interactions between these activities and marine fish communities. We evaluated the impact of both salmon and halibut farms on mackerel (Scomber scombrus) and whiting (Merlangius merlangus) sampled near sea cages using condition indices and fatty acid (FA) biomarkers. Results of the stomach content analysis indicated that mackerel and whiting consumed waste feed which was also reflected in their modified FA profiles. Both mackerel and whiting had elevated levels of FAs that are of vegetable oils origin. The use of vegetable oils as replacement for marine oils is a lot more common in salmon farming than halibut farming. Additionally, the overall effects of the two fish farms were more pronounced in whiting than in mackerel sampled near the sea cages. By allowing discrimination between sources of trophic interactions, this method could lead to more informed decisions in managing different farming activities. 相似文献

Plant disease emergences have dramatically increased recently as a result of global changes, especially with respect to trade, host genetic uniformity, and climate change. A better understanding of the conditions and processes determining epidemic outbreaks caused by the emergence of a new pathogen, or pathogen strain, is needed to develop strategies and inform decisions to manage emerging diseases. A polyetic process-based model is developed to analyse conditions of disease emergence. This model simulates polycyclic epidemics during successive growing seasons, the yield losses they cause, and the pathogen survival between growing seasons. This framework considers one immigrant strain coming in a single event into a system where a resident strain is already established. Outcomes are formulated as probability of emergence, time to emergence, and yield loss, resulting from deterministic and stochastic simulations. An analytical solution to determine a threshold for emergence is also derived. Analyses focus on the effects of two fitness parameters on emergence: the relative rate of reproduction (epidemic speed), and the relative rate of mortality (decay of population between seasons). Analyses revealed that stochasticity is a critical feature of disease emergence. The simulations suggest that: (a) emergence may require a series of independent immigration events before a successful invasion takes place; (b) an explosion in the population size of the new pathogen (or strain) may be preceded by many successive growing seasons of cryptic presence following an immigration event; and (c) survival between growing seasons is as important as reproduction during the growing season in determining disease emergence. 相似文献
