An exploratory survey was carried out to assess economics and employment generation of the trade of bamboo and bamboo-based
secondary products in the eastern Bangladesh, to obtain reliable information about their status, socio-economic significance,
production and marketing. The study was undertaken over 30 bamboo-based enterprises in a suburban market of eastern Bangladesh,
to investigate regional product details, economic profitability and employment opportunities. The sample entrepreneurs, corresponding
to about 25% of the bamboo enterprise population were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. About 202 full and
part-time workers were employed in the factories, under categories of artisan (who manufactured secondary products). The average number of worker’s in the large, medium and small factories were 9 (artisan
40%), 6.45 (artisan 35%) and 5 (artisan 25%) respectively. The study revealed that there was always a satisfied demand of
skilled artisans. Most of the workers were relatively newly employed (not more than 5 years). The daily wage rate varied between
70 and 130 Tk. ($US 1 equals approximately 70 Bangladeshi Taka (Tk.), as at December 2008). Bambusa balcooa was the most utilized species (39.96%) in terms of monetary value. The price of a single B. balcooa culm in the local market was Tk. 160–210. Nine sizes of articles under seven bamboo categories were identified, these being
bera (36″ × 120″ and 72″ × 96″), bookshelf (36″ × 24″), chaluni (12″ × 12″), chatai (48″ × 60″ and 36″ × 48″), jhuri, rickshaw hood and tukri. Net average profit per article was the highest for rickshaw hoods (Tk. 400 at the retailer stage). The total expected annual
income for an enterprises from all articles types sold was estimated to be Tk. 85,800. Three distinct marketing channels were
identified for selling bamboo and value-added secondary products. The study also generated policy implications for effective

Avian nephritis virus (ANV) is thought to infect poultry flocks worldwide, but no confirmed case has been reported in Australia. The first such case is described in this study. Cases of young chickens with clinical signs of dehydration and diarrhea were submitted to our laboratory and histopathology detected interstitial nephritis. Vaccine strains of infectious bronchitis virus were detected in some of these cases but were not considered to be the causative agent. A total of seven fresh submissions from broiler chicken flocks were collected at 8-11 days of age. Degenerate PCR primers were designed based on published ANV polymerase gene sequences and used to analyze historic cases as well as the fresh submissions. Six of the seven fresh submissions, and one historic case, were positive for ANV with nucleotide sequencing confirming these results. These results establish ANV as an infectious pathogen circulating in Australian poultry. 相似文献

This serological survey was carried out to detect antibodies in dromedary camels against BVD virus in Iran. A total of 137
serum samples, were collected from camels at Khorein abattoir in suburbs of Tehran and examined for BVDV, using the serum
neutralization test (SNT). Twenty seven of the 137 camels (19.7%) were positive for BVDV antibodies. It was found that the
rate of seropositive camels in Iran is substantially higher compared to figures published in most other countries. This study
indicated an increased frequency of infection rate with increasing age of camels. The frequency of positive cases was not

The orphan G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) GPR124/tumor endothelial marker 5 is highly expressed in central nervous system (CNS) endothelium. Here, we show that complete null or endothelial-specific GPR124 deletion resulted in embryonic lethality from CNS-specific angiogenesis arrest in forebrain and neural tube. Conversely, GPR124 overexpression throughout all adult vascular beds produced CNS-specific hyperproliferative vascular malformations. In vivo, GPR124 functioned cell-autonomously in endothelium to regulate sprouting, migration, and developmental expression of the blood-brain barrier marker Glut1, whereas in vitro, GPR124 mediated Cdc42-dependent directional migration to forebrain-derived, vascular endothelial growth factor-independent cues. Our results demonstrate CNS-specific angiogenesis regulation by an endothelial receptor and illuminate functions of the poorly understood adhesion GPCR subfamily. Further, the functional tropism of GPR124 marks this receptor as a therapeutic target for CNS-related vascular pathologies. 相似文献

Thrombelastograph analyzers are point-of-care hemostatic analyzers that provide global assessment of the hemostatic process. Thrombelastography (TEG) detects and provides a continuous recording of the changes in the viscoelastic properties of whole blood from initial clot formation through fibinolysis. TEG has been validated for use in dogs, horses, and cats. Hemostasis research using TEG has focused on test validation, alterations of TEG tracings in animals with naturally occurring diseases, and the use of TEG for monitoring various therapeutic modalities. This article reviews TEG methodology and terminology, including potential sources of preanalytical and analytical errors, the correlation between TEG and other routine hemostatic assays, and current clinical applications of TEG, with emphasis on veterinary medical practice. Data suggest that TEG may be a sensitive and useful adjunctive tool for evaluating an animal with an underlying coagulopathy, including hypercoagulability and hypocoagulability. Additional prospective studies are needed to (1) correlate TEG tracing patterns with a clinical predisposition for bleeding or thrombosis in various disease states and (2) determine whether monitoring and treating hemostatic disorders based on TEG tracings improve clinical outcome. 相似文献

Traditional systems of medicine have become a topic of global importance recently. Increased commercialization of economically
important medicinal plants has resulted in overharvesting, threatening their survival. The present study was carried out to
document the indigenous uses of medicinal plants by the local communities in and around Rema-Kalenga Wildlife Sanctuary, Bangladesh.
Data collection was predominantly qualitative recording the species use, identifying their relative importance (RI) and assessing
the informants’ consensus factor (Fic) on associated knowledge. We interviewed 140 households of the local community and 5 local herbal practitioners. A total
of 44 plant species were in use to treat 33 ailments under 10 broad disease categories. Five species were found to have high
use versatility (RI > 1), Emblica officinale L. being the most versatile. Respiratory problems scored the highest Fic value (0.56) involving the use of 30% of the species recorded. Terminalia bellerica Roxb., Sterculia villosa Roxb., Dillenia pentagyna Roxb. and Terminalia arjuna Bedd. were being harvested commercially. Use by the community, particularly for subsistence consumption, seemed to be sustainable,
but commercial extraction of some species appeared unsustainable. Buffer zone-based commercial farming of medicinal plants
with a commercial value could serve a dual purpose of assuring sustainable alternative income generation for local communities

Because lack of data impedes the assessment of the conservation of medicinal plants, ethno-medicinal studies are important
to fill this gap. This study considered the traditional use of plants for health care by the rural communities in two forested
and non-forested regions of Bangladesh. A total of 230 respondents were interviewed accompanied by field observation and voucher
specimen collection. Altogether, 68 species of medicinal plants belonging to 38 families distributing over 58 genera were
recorded, of which 22 species were common in both regions. Trees were the most commonly utilized growth form and leaves were
the most commonly used plant part. Forests and homesteads were the major sources of medicinal plants in forested and non-forested
regions, respectively. High use versatility (Relative Importance >1) was represented by 14 species; Emblica officinale L. and Allium sativum L. were the most versatile species. Forty-one individual ailments were treated with the medicinal plants recorded. The ailment
categories ‘respiratory problems’ and ‘sexual problems’ received the highest score from the calculation of informants’ consensus
factor (F
ic) in forested and non-forested regions, respectively. The findings could contribute in the pharmaceutical sector by directing
further investigation of bio-active compounds in medicinal plants. Secondly, results could inform the clues for conservation

In Israel four European pear cultivars are grown: ‘Spadona’ is the main cultivar and ‘Coscia’, ‘Gentile’ and ‘Spadochina’ are its pollinators. However, molecular S-genotyping revealed that ‘Spadona’ is semi-compatible with its three pollinators. This explains, at least in part, the relatively low pear yield in Israel. The Syrian pear (Pyrus syriaca) grows wild in Israel and blooms intensively, overlapping the blooming of the cultivated European pears. Cross-fertilization between Syrian pear and ‘Spadona’ was shown to be efficient suggesting that Syrian pear might be a potent pollinator for ‘Spadona’. Twenty-six Syrian pear seedlings, from different sites in north-east Israel were S-genotyped identifying 11 that are fully compatible with the four European pear varieties cultivated in Israel. By this screening, 24 different S-RNases were cloned; ten of them are new, whereas the other fourteen had been identified previously. In addition, seedlings of two wild pear species were also S-genotyped. Two seedlings from Pyrus betulifolia and one from Pyrus korshinskii were found to be genetically compatible with the four European pear cultivars. From these seedlings four S-RNases were cloned, two are new, one had been cloned previously and one was identical to an S-RNase allele cloned from Syrian pear in this work. 相似文献
