Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass, downy brome) is an important invader in western North America, dominating millions of hectares of former semi‐arid shrubland. Stand failure or ‘die‐off’ is relatively common in monocultures of this annual grass. The study reported here investigated whether soil‐borne pathogens could be causal agents in die‐offs. Soils from two die‐off areas and adjacent B. tectorum stands were used in a glasshouse experiment with sterilised and non‐sterilised treatments. Soil sterilisation did not increase emergence, which averaged 80% in both die‐off and non‐die‐off soils. Seedling biomass was higher in die‐off soils, probably due to increased nitrogen availability. Fusarium was isolated from 80% of killed seeds in non‐sterilised soil treatments. In pathogenicity tests with 16 Fusarium isolates, host seeds incubated under water stress (?1.5MPa for 1 week prior to transfer to free water) suffered over twice the mortality of seeds incubated directly in free water (25–83% with water stress vs. 5–43% without water stress). These results suggest that soil‐borne Fusarium could play a role in B. tectorum stand failure in the field, but that low water stress conditions in the glasshouse experiment were not conducive to high levels of disease. Pathogenic Fusarium isolates were obtained from seeds planted in both die‐off and non‐die‐off soils, suggesting that microenvironmental factors that affect levels of water stress might be as important as relative abundance of soil‐borne pathogens in mediating spatial patterns of disease incidence in the field.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety of spleen aspiration as a sampling technique for the parasitological detection by culture and microscopy of Leishmania (chagasi) infantum. Two hundred and nine domiciled dogs from an endemic area for visceral leishmaniasis in Bahia State, Brazil, were studied. Most dogs (87%) were seropositive for anti-L. chagasi antibodies by ELISA. Clinical signs of disease were recorded and the animals monitored during and after spleen puncture in order to detect possible complications associated with the procedure. From a total of 257 splenic punctures in the 209 animals, only three minor events occurred, with no significant consequence for the animals and no association with risk factors. Leishmania was isolated from 149/180 (83%) seropositive dogs, and from 6/26 (23%) seronegative animals. The procedure did not cause adverse side effects or unnecessary suffering and confirmed the diagnosis in a large percentage of dogs. We conclude that spleen aspiration can be considered an effective and safe procedure for the definitive diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniosis.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of natural weathering on the performance of Scots pine sapwood treated with epoxidized linseed oil (ELO) and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) was investigated by measuring water uptake, colour, check propagation and chemical changes. Boards were impregnated in a pilot-scale autoclave under various conditions. After the treatments, pairs of samples were cut from the treated boards and exposed at 45° angle facing south for a long-term test of natural weathering above ground in Uppsala (Sweden). The effect of solar radiation and humidity on the colour changes, water uptake, check propagation and chemical alterations was assessed during 20 months of exposure. The obtained results can serve as indication for the viability of the treatments. Samples impregnated with low retentions of ELO showed similar performance regarding check propagation and moisture uptake as samples with higher retentions. No significant difference between these samples was found regarding colour change which is mainly caused by blue stain fungi on the surface. In opposite, samples treated with MTES exhibited no consistent water uptake and check propagation unproportioned to the applied retentions. The spectra of ELO- and MTES-treated wood after weathering showed a significant decrease of the peak at 1510 cm?1 indicating delignification of wood surface caused by weathering.  相似文献

Remote sensing approaches are of increasing importance for agricultural applications, particularly for the support of selective agricultural measures that increase the productivity of crop stands. In contrast to multi-spectral image data, hyperspectral data has been shown to be highly suitable for the detection of crop growth anomalies, since they allow a detailed examination of stress-dependent changes in certain spectral ranges. However, the entire spectrum covered by hyperspectral data is probably not needed for discrimination between healthy and stressed plants. To define an optimal sensor-based system or a data product designed for crop stress detection, it is necessary to know which spectral wavelengths are significantly affected by stress factors and which spectral resolution is needed. In this study, a single airborne hyperspectral HyMap dataset was analyzed for its potential to detect plant stress symptoms in wheat stands induced by a pathogen infection. The Bhattacharyya distance (BD) with a forward feature search strategy was used to select relevant bands for the differentiation between healthy and fungal infected stands. Two classification algorithms, i.e. spectral angle mapper (SAM) and support vector machines (SVM) were used to classify the data covering an experimental field. Thus, the original dataset as well as datasets reduced to several band combinations as selected by the feature selection approach were classified. To analyze the influence of the spectral resolution on the detection accuracy, the original dataset was additionally stepwise spectrally resampled and a feature selection was carried out on each step. It is demonstrated that just a few phenomenon-specific spectral features are sufficient to detect wheat stands infected with powdery mildew. With original spectral resolution of HyMap, the highest classification accuracy could be obtained by using only 13 spectral bands with a Kappa coefficient of 0.59 in comparison to Kappa 0.57 using all spectral bands of the HyMap sensor. The results demonstrate that even a few hyperspectral bands as well as bands with lower spectral resolution still allow an adequate detection of fungal infections in wheat. By focusing on a few relevant bands, the detection accuracy could be enhanced and thus more reliable information could be extracted which may be helpful in agricultural practice.  相似文献

The tunneling resistance between two ferromagnetic metal layers that are separated by a thin insulator depends on the relative orientation of the magnetization M of each layer. In a memory device, independent switching of the magnetically soft layer is achieved by making the other layer either exchange-biased or magnetically hard. The repeated reversal of M of the soft layer by field cycling can demagnetize the other magnetically hard layer and thus erase the tunnel junction's memory. The M of exchange-biased structures was stable at least to 10(7) cycles, whereas in hard structures, M generally decayed logarithmically with the number of field cycles. The decay was very sensitive to the thickness of the hard layer and the composition of the soft layer. However, no decay was observed when the moment reversal was accomplished by coherent rotation, establishing that demagnetization results from the formation and motion of domain walls in the soft layer during field cycling.  相似文献

Data from 439 Brahman (B) and grade Brahman (GB; 7/8 Brahman or more) calves born from 1970 through 1975 at the USDA Subtropical Agricultural Research Station were used to estimate least-squares means, heritabilities and genetic correlations for sheath area and preweaning growth traits. Grade Brahman calves weighed more (P less than .01) at birth and gained more (P less than .01) preweaning than B calves, although sheath areas were not different. Males exceeded (P less than .01) heifers in all preweaning growth traits and had larger (P less than .01) sheath areas. Heritabilities were: sheath area, .45 +/- .13; birth weight, .25 +/- .13; average daily gain, .38 +/- .15 and weaning weight, .35 +/- .15. Genetic correlations between sheath area and birth weight, average daily gain and weaning weight were .23 +/- .35, .58 +/- .25 and .52 +/- .27. These results suggest selection could be effective in reducing sheath area in B and B-derivative breeds, but would be antagonistic to preweaning growth traits. Because of relatively low phenotypic correlations between sheath area and preweaning growth rate (.27) and weaning weight (.29), continued emphasis on increasing growth rate or weaning weight could generally be maintained with careful attention to avoiding large sheath areas through independent culling level or index selection procedures.  相似文献
