The photochemical reactions of phosmet, an organophosphorus insecticide used for plant protection and for control of ectoparasites on productive livestock, were studied in the presence of wool wax. Induced by UV light, phosmet features numerous degradation pathways as well as photoaddition reactions with lipid structure moieties. In model irradiation experiments of phosmet in mixtures of solvents (cyclohexane, cyclohexene, 2-propanol) and fatty acid methyl esters (methyl stearate, methyl oleate, 12-hydroxymethyl stearate), both adjusted to the hydroxyl and iodine values of wool wax, half-lives were determined to be approximately 7 and 16 h, respectively. Irradiation of phosmet on crude sheep wool resulted in a degradation rate of 65% after 24 h. In tracer studies with stable isotope labeled phosmet ([15N]phosmet) in commercial lanolin and on raw sheep wool, employing a sunlight simulator and natural sunlight, wool wax bound phosmet was formed. After extraction and measurement by elemental analyzer/isotope ratio mass spectrometry, delta15N values of the phosmet-free wool wax fractions were notably increased as compared to the value of natural lanolin. Calculated from the delta15N values, an average of 13.9/15.6% (sunlight simulator/natural sunlight) was bound to wool wax lipids after irradiation of thin films of commercial lanolin. In order to contribute to the analysis and solution of regional scale environmental problems in East Asia, we developed a tool for the comprehensive assessment of alternative policy options to improve air quality. This tool projects the future regional energy supply, calculates the emission levels of sulfur dioxide and estimates the geographical pattern of sulfur deposition resulting from emissions. Sulfur deposition in Japan through 2030 was forecasted for various energy supply and emission control scenarios using the analysis tool. Future sulfur depositions were calculated from the source-receptor matrix for 1995 and the growth rate of emission for the source subregion. In the case of the current legislation scenario, anthropogenic SO2 emissions in East Asia would grow by 34 percent and sulfur deposition in Japan would increase by approximately 20 percent between 1995 and 2030. This increase in sulfur deposition over these 35 years is sligthly less than the contribution from volcanic emission to sulfur deposition in Japan. Humic substances from the Ah horizons of five differently calcareous soils from Greece were successively extracted with organic solvents and/or 0.1 N NaOH and they were characterized by UV/VIS/IR spectroscopy and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Diethylether, acetone and dioxane extracts contained non-humic substances such as aliphatic and aromatic ethers, esters, alcoholes and long aliphatic chains, while low molecular weight humic substances were found in the ethanol extracts. All the extracts were found to contain phenolic and ?-acceptor compounds. Some differences in the physical characteristics of the humic substances were associated with the kinds of vegetation. The IR-spectra showed no essential differences between HA's and FA's extracted directly with NaOH or after previous soil extraction with organic solvents. HA's extracted directly by NaOH from soil samples under grass had a higher degree of condensation and thermal stability and generally higher carbon contents than those from soils under pine, cultivation and sedges. 相似文献

Chemical changes of beech litter and barley straw during decomposition under laboratory conditions Beech litter and barley straw were incubated at 20°C and 70% of maximum water holding capacity in the presence and absence of artificial “soil” and earthworms (Eisenia fetida). Results show that beech litter biodegradation was enhanced by E. fetida during the first part, but delayed in later stages of the incubation period, as indicated by the changes of ash contents and C-to-N ratios with progressive decomposition. In the long run the organic matter (OM) of beech litter tended to be stabilised through the action of worms. In contrast, for barley straw a more intense biodegradation was observed in the presence of E. fetida throughout the experiment. Almost 80% of litter and straw OM could be identified by means of wet chemical degradation methods (70% polysaccharides, lignin; 10% lipids, protein). The proportion of the exclusively plant-derived constituents cellulose and lignin showed a partly strong decrease with progressive decomposition; simultaneously the contents of also microbially synthesised components such as non-cellulosic polysaccharides and protein increased. Changes of the non-cellulosic polysaccharide-cellulose-quotients (NCQ), lignin-cellulose-quotients (LCQ), and acid-to-aldehyde ratios (ac/al)v and (ac/al)s in the residual lignin reflected well the litter decomposition process. At the end of the experiment - irrespective of treatments - the degree of beech litter biodegradation was comparable to that of Of-Oh transitional layers in beech-derived forest humus profiles. Bulk-tank milk (BTM) analysis is now widely accepted as a useful tool for evaluating milk quality and monitoring udder-health status in a herd. Bacterial and somatic cell count (SCC) estimation of BTM, when done repeatedly over a period of time, can become a significant knowledge base. When interpreted within the context of the farm's management practices, this information provides a basis for evaluating current and potential milk quality and mastitis problems in a herd. This article describes the process of using BTM analysis to make decisions on improving milk quality and herd udder health. It should be kept in mind that although individual cow samples for milk culture and SCC are more definitive for diagnosis and monitoring of udder health, BTM analysis is less expensive, more convenient, and faster than testing milk samples from individual animals or groups of cows. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine milk flow, somatic cell counts (SCCs), and the incidence of clinical mastitis in cows that had undergone theloresectoscopy for treatment of teat stenosis caused by mucosal detachment in the region of the streak canal or Fürstenberg's rosette. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 52 cows with teat stenosis that were treated via theloresectoscopy. PROCEDURE: Medical records of eligible cows were reviewed. Additional data regarding milking ease, SCC, development of clinical mastitis of the affected gland, and whether the cow remained in the herd were collected via owner-completed questionnaires. RESULTS: 49 of 52 questionnaires were completed. At referral, teat sinusitis was diagnosed in 29 of 52 cows. Milk flow was normal in 38 of 41 treated teats at discharge and in 24 of 40 during the next lactation. Thirteen of 49 cows were culled during the next lactation because of abnormal udder health. High SCC and teat sinusitis at referral and development of clinical mastitis during the 10-day period after surgery resulted in high SCCs in the remainder of the current lactation. The incidence of clinical mastitis during the remainder of the current and during the next lactation was higher in cows that had teat sinusitis at the time of surgery, compared with those that did not. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Teat stenoses resulting from mucosal lesions in the region of the streak canal or Fürstenberg's rosette may be successfully treated via theloresectoscopy. OBJECTIVE: To determine efficacy and safety of cyclosporine in the treatment of atopic dermatitis among dogs in North America. DESIGN: Randomized controlled (phase 1) and open-label (phase 2) trials. ANIMALS: 268 dogs with atopic dermatitis. PROCEDURE: In phase 1, dogs were randomly assigned to be treated with cyclosporine (5 mg/kg [2.3 mg/Ib], PO, q 24 h) or a placebo. In phase 2, all dogs were treated with cyclosporine for 16 weeks. Frequency of cyclosporine administration was decreased if dogs improved clinically. RESULTS: At the end of phase 1, canine atopic dermatitis extent and severity index (CADESI) scores for dogs treated with cyclosporine were significantly lower than scores for control dogs. Percentage of dogs with severe pruritus decreased from 67% to 16% for the cyclosporine group but from 66% to only 61% for the control group. During phase 2, cyclosporine dosage was decreased to every-other-day administration in 39% of the dogs after 4 weeks. After 12 weeks, 22% of the dogs were treated twice weekly and 36% were treated every other day. After 16 weeks, CADESI score had decreased > 50% in 68% of the dogs and 47% of dogs had no or mild pruritus. The most frequent adverse reactions were gastrointestinal tract signs. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that cyclosporine is efficacious for the treatment of atopic dermatitis in dogs and that frequency of cyclosporine administration can be reduced following an initial induction period.
