Fine litterfall and nutrient return patterns were studied in three subtropical humid forest stands (7-, 13- and 16-year old), regrowing after selective tree cutting in north-eastern India. The seasonality of fine litterfall was unimodal, with a peak during spring and a trough during rainy season in the forest regrowths of three different ages. The rate of fine litterfall increased with increasing basal area of the woody vegetation during forest regrowth. Leaf litter accounted for 83% of the total litterfall. N concentration was maximum during autumn and minimum during rainy season; nutrient concentrations were highest in the leaf litter. Seasonal variation in P concentration was small. Maximum and minimum input of N and P to the forest floor through fine litter coincided with the respective periods of litter production.  相似文献

Introduction   The skeletal muscle has an effective chemical–mechanical transducer system to generate physical forces which needs a constant supply of Adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The ATP requirement may vary with the body size of organisms. Studies of the size-dependent properties of animals have been mainly focused on aerobic processes and the underlying structures supporting them (S chmidt -N ielsen 1984; E wart et al. 1988; B errioslopez et al. 1996). Some attempts have been made to correlate anaerobic process with body mass in fish (S omero and C hildress 1980, 1990). It has been reported that anaerobic metabolic processes exhibit different scaling patterns to those of aerobic processes (S ullivan and S omero 1980; H eusner 1987; H ochachka et al. 1987; S omero and C hildress 1990). The differences between aerobic and anaerobic capacities may be due to the differing roles of inter-organ interactions in general metabolism. The scaling of metabolic enzymes has also been shown to be associated with the scaling of protein concentrations in fish (S omero and C hildress 1990). M c M ahan (1984) has remarked that the scaling of aerobic metabolism cannot be explained by engineering principles involving skeletal muscle strength. Thus in spite of some strong experimental supports, it has been too difficult to explain the intricacy of aerobic scaling (S chmidt -N ielsen 1984; C alder 1987; H eusner 1987; S omero and C hildress 1990).W eihs and W ebb (1983) have argued that swimming speed should scale with body size to favour prey capture. Further, B errioslopez et al. (1996) demonstrated the scaling of skeletal mass to body mass in fish. Since Clarias batrachus is a predatory teleost, the scaling of aerobic (MDH) and anaerobic (LDH) enzymes and proteins have been studied to test the existing hypotheses about the functional roles of metabolic scaling in fish.  相似文献

The study was conducted under the “Uttar Pradesh Sodic Lands Reclamation Project” to examine changes that occurred in the reclaimed sodic land in two districts of Uttar Pradesh, India. The study focuses on long‐term seasonal changes in the floral diversity and soil characteristics of the reclaimed sodic land over a period of 10 y. The changes in the floristic composition, plant density, and soil characteristics (microbial biomass carbon [MBC], pH, exchangeable‐sodium percentage (ESP), and electrical conductivity) were compared among the different study plots after different years of sodic‐land reclamation. The study plots comprised reclaimed land with rice–wheat cultivation; semireclaimed land under rice cultivation only and nonreclaimed barren sodic land. There was a significant variation in the floristic composition of the three study plots. Dominance in the floristic composition was shifted from monocotyledonous weeds in the nonreclaimed sodic land to dicotyledonous weeds in the reclaimed land after 10 y of reclamation. Among the soil characteristics, the most remarkable changes were observed in soil MBC and ESP during the course of sodic‐land reclamation. Soil MBC increased up to 480% and ESP values decreased up to 79% in the reclaimed plots with reference to the nonreclaimed plots. The soil amelioration was more pronounced in the upper layer (0–30 cm) as compared to the lower layer (below 30 cm depth). A positive significant correlation was revealed between soil MBC and floristic composition of the reclaimed plots. These changes in floristic composition and soil characteristics could be used as good indicators of the eco‐restoration of the sodic lands. The present study provides useful insights in understanding the temporal progress of eco‐restoration in the reclaimed sodic lands.  相似文献

Molluscicidal activity of cow urine alone and with different additives was studied against Lymnaea acuminata. The toxicity of cow urine kept for 15 days in sunlight (8 h/day) or ambient laboratory conditions against the snail was time- and concentration-dependent. The pH of fresh cow urine is 7.4 which changes to 10.9 when kept for 15 days in laboratory; exposure to sunlight for the same period alter the pH to 10.85. Binary combinations (1:1) of freeze-dried cow urine kept for 15 days separately with each of Allium sativum (Liliaceae) bulb powder, Azadirachta indica (Meliaceae) oil, Annona squamosa (Annonaceae) seed powder, Ferula asafoetida (Apiaceae) root latex and tea leaves, and Camellia sinensis (Theaceae) were more toxic to the snail than treatment with urine alone. Additives to cow urine in sunlight were more effective than those under laboratory conditions.  相似文献

An understanding of the rooting pattern of tree species used in agroforestry systems is essential for the development and management of systems involving them. Seasonal variation, depth wise and lateral distribution of biomass in roots of different diameter classes and their annual production were studied using sequential core sampling. The investigations were carried out in four tree species under tree only and tree+crop situations at ICAR Research Farm, Barapani (Meghalya), India. The tree species were mandarin (Citrus reticulata), alder (Alnus nepalensis), cherry (Prunus cerasoides) and albizia (Paraserianthes falcataria). The contribution of fine roots to the total root biomass ranged from 87% in albizia to 77% in mandarin. The bulk of the fine roots (38% to 47%) in the four tree species was concentrated in the upper 10 cm soil layer, but the coarse roots were concentrated in 10–20 cm soil depth in alder (46%) and albizia (51%) and at 0–10 cm in cherry (41%) and mandarin (48%). In all the four tree species, biomass of both fine- and coarse-roots followed a unimodal growth curve by showing a gradual increase from spring (pre-rainy) season to autumn (post rainy) season. Biomass to necromass ratio varied between 2 to 3 in the four tree species. The maximum (3.2) ratio was observed during spring and the minimum (2) in the rainy season. In alder and albizia, the fine roots were distributed only up to 1 m distance from the tree trunk but in the other two species they were found at a distance up to 1.5 m from the tree trunk. The annual fine root production varied from 3.6 Mg ha–1 to 6.2 Mg ha–1 and total production from 4.2 to 8.4 Mg ha–1 in albizia to mandarin, respectively. Cherry and mandarin had a large number of woody roots in the surface layers which pose physical hindrance during soil working and intercultural operations under agroforestry. But the high biomass of roots of these two species may be advantageous for sequential or spatially separated agroforestry systems. However, alder and albizia have the most desirable rooting characteristics for agroforestry systems.This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Gross and histologic lesions of paratuberculosis were studied in water buffaloes. Small intestines and associated mesenteric lymph nodes of 405 water buffaloes were examined. Of these, 20 animals having visible changes of intestinal thickening, mucosal corrugations, and enlargement of mesenteric lymph nodes exhibited histologic alteration characteristics of mild to moderate granulomatous inflammation. The histologic lesions observed in these animals were classified into 3 grades on the basis of type of cellular infiltration, granuloma formation, and presence of acid-fast bacilli. Grade-1 lesions observed in 8 animals were marked by the presence of scattered epithelioid macrophages amid large number of lymphocytes in the intestinal villi and in the paracortical regions of the associated mesenteric lymph nodes. Another 8 animals classified under grade-2 revealed microgranulomas, infiltration with a larger number of epithelioid macrophages besides lymphocytes in the intestinal villi, and granulomas in the mesenteric lymph nodes. Grade-3 lesions observed in 4 animals were characterized by the presence of epithelioid granulomas and giant cells in the intestines and the mesenteric lymph nodes. The Ziehl-Neelsen's stained tissue sections revealed acid-fast bacilli in grade-3 and -2 animals and acid-fast granular debris in grade-1 animals. Among these 20 buffaloes, 14 (70%) were positive in the IS900 specific polymerase chain reaction and 6 (30%) were positive in the bacterial culture.  相似文献

When the freshwater snail Lymnaea acuminata was exposed to sub-lethal doses (2.0, 5.0, and 8.0 mg/L) of carbaryl, fecundity was significantly reduced and even stopped at higher sub-lethal doses and altered metabolic activity in the body tissue of the snail was observed. The change from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism results in lesser energy production in the body tissues of the snails, causing paralysis and finally death. This reduced fecundity and altered metabolism suggests that it would be better to avoid the use of carbaryl pesticides in the water bodies or fields adjoining the water bodies particularly in the rainy season.  相似文献

Repeated application of phosphorus (P) as superphosphate either alone or in conjunction with cattle manure and fertilizer N may affect the P balance and the forms and distribution of P in soil. During 7 years, we monitored 0.5 M NaHCO3 extractable P (Olsen‐P) and determined the changes in soil inorganic P (Pi) and organic P (Po) caused by a yearly dose of 52 kg P ha—1 as superphosphate and different levels of cattle manure and fertilizer N application in a soybean‐wheat system on Vertisol. In general, the contents of Olsen‐P increased with conjunctive use of cattle manure. However, increasing rate of fertilizer nitrogen (N) reduced the Olsen‐P due to larger P exploitation by crops. The average amount of fertilizer P required to increase Olsen‐P by 1 mg kg—1 was 10.5 kg ha—1 without manure and application of 8 t manure reduced it to 8.3 kg ha—1. Fertilizer P in excess of crop removal accumulated in labile (NaHCO3‐Pi and Po) and moderately labile (NaOH‐Pi and Po) fractions linearly and manure application enhanced accumulation of Po. The P recovered as sum of different fractions varied from 91.5 to 98.7% of total P (acid digested, Pt). Excess fertilizer P application in presence of manure led to increased levels of Olsen‐P in both topsoil and subsoil. In accordance, the recovery of Pt from the 0—15 cm layer was slightly less than the theoretical P (P added + change in soil P — P removed by crops) confirming that some of the topsoil P may have migrated to the subsoil. The P fractions were significantly correlated with apparent P balance and acted as sink for fertilizer P.  相似文献

The plasma concentrations and pharmacokinetics of the fluoroquinolone antimicrobial agent pefloxacin, following the administration of a single intravenous (10 mg/kg) or oral (20 mg/kg) dose, were investigated in healthy female goats. The antimicrobial activity in plasma was measured at predetermined times after drug administration by an agar well diffusion microbiological assay, using Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) as the test organism. Concentrations of the drug 0.25 g/ml were maintained in plasma for up to 6 and 10 h after intravenous (IV) or oral administration of pefloxacin, respectively. The concentration–time data for pefloxacin in plasma after IV or oral administration conformed to two- and one-compartment open models, respectively. Plasma pefloxacin concentrations decreased rapidly during the initial phase after IV injection, with a distribution half-life (t 1/2 ) of 0.10±0.01 h. The terminal phase had a half-life (t 1/2 ) of 1.12±0.21 h. The volume of distribution at steady state (V dss), mean residence time (MRT) and total systemic clearance (ClB) of pefloxacin were 1.08±0.09 L/kg, 1.39±0.23 h and 821±88 (ml/h)/kg, respectively. Following oral administration of pefloxacin, the maximum concentration in the plasma (C max) was 2.22±0.48 g/ml and the interval from administration until maximum concentration (t max) was 2.3±0.7 h. The absorption half-life (t 1/2 ka), mean absorption time (MAT) and elimination half-life of pefloxacin were 0.82±0.40, 4.2±1.0 and 2.91±0.50 h, respectively. The oral bioavailability of pefloxacin was 42%±5.8%. On the basis of the pharmacokinetic data, a dosage regimen of 20 mg/kg, IV at 8 h intervals or orally twice daily, is suggested for treating infections caused by drug-sensitive pathogens in goats.  相似文献
