Plant beneficial bacteria (PBB) have shown potential for disease control and are particularly important in the management of bacterial diseases, which are poorly controlled by conventional methods. In melon, bacterial fruit blotch caused by Acidovorax citrulli is a seedborne disease that is particularly destructive under certain conditions. PBB strains were screened for their ability to protect seeds and leaves from bacterial fruit blotch, and their antibiosis activity and plant colonization were studied. When Bacillus sp. RAB9 was applied to infected seeds, it reduced the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) by 47% and increased the incubation period (the time between inoculation and the first visible symptoms) by 35%. Three of the selected strains (JM339, MEN2 and PEP91) displayed antibiosis against A. citrulli. The RAB9Rif-Nal mutant colonized seeds epiphytically and roots and stems endophytically. Paenibacillus lentimorbus MEN2 sprayed on melon seedlings protected leaves, and when challenged with A. citrulli, it reduced the AUDPC (by 88%), disease index (by 81%) and incidence (by 77%). Given that the production of both melon seedlings and commercially grown greenhouse melons is increasing, biocontrol strategies may well be integrated into bacterial blotch management programs.  相似文献

Understanding resource capture can help design appropriate species combinations, planting designs and management. Leaf area index (LAI) and its longevity are the most important factors defining dry matter production and thus growth and productivity. The ecophysiological modifications and yield of rubber (Hevea spp.) in an agroforestry system (AFS) with beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were studied. The experiment was established in Southeast-Brazil, with three rubber cultivars: IAN 3087, RRIM 600 and RRIM 527. The AFS comprised double rows of rubber trees along with beans sown in autumn and winter seasons in 1999. There was about 50% higher rubber yield per tree in the AFS than the rubber monoculture. Trees within the AFS responded to higher solar radiation availability with higher LAI and total foliage area, allowing its greater interception. All three cultivars had higher LAI in the AFS than monoculture, reaching maximum values in the AFS between April and May of 3.17 for RRIM 527; 2.83 for RRIM 600 and 2.28 for IAN 3087. The maximum LAI values for monocrop rubber trees were: 2.65, 2.62 and 1.99, respectively, for each cultivar. Rubber production and LAI were positively correlated in both the AFS and monoculture but leaf fall of rubber trees in the AFS was delayed and total phytomass was larger. It is suggested that trees in the AFS were under exploited and could yield more without compromising their life cycle if the tapping system was intensified. This shows how knowledge of LAI can be used to manage tapping intensity in the field, leading to higher rubber yield.  相似文献

We used the ‘Baronesse’/‘Full Pint’ doubled haploid population to analyse the genetic factors controlling flowering date under South American conditions. Both parents have similar heading dates, but the population shows transgressive segregation. Two genes, eps2S on chromosome 2H and sdw1 on chromosome 3H, explained most of the phenotypic variation for anthesis date, with the later allele carried by ‘Baronesse’ and ‘Full Pint’ , respectively. Both effects were completely additive with no interaction. We studied three plant developmental periods: seedling emergence to tillering (Z10–Z20), tillering (Z20–Z30) and end of tillering to anthesis (Z30–Z49) under field conditions at three contrasting planting dates. Z10–Z20 was also measured under semi‐controlled conditions. eps2S controlled Z30–Z49 periods, while sdw1 controlled Z20–Z30. Each of the two genes for the end‐point phenotype—anthesis date—was a determinant of flowering at a different developmental stage. No gene x planting date interactions were detected.  相似文献

The beverage obtained from the yerba mate tea, besides being the most consumed in Brazil, has high concentrations of chlorogenic acids. In this study, a central composite design was employed to establish the best infusion time, temperature and water volume to maximize the extraction of chlorogenic acids 5-caffeoylquinic (5CQ), 3.4-dicaffeoylquinic (3.4 DQ), 3.5-dicaffeoylquinic (3.5 DQ) and 4.5-dicaffeoylquinic (4.5 DQ), from the leaves and stems of yerba mate tea (beverage ready for consumption). Analyses were performed by high-performance liquid chromatography and the optimum conditions were obtained through the use of the desirability function of Derringer and Suich. The maximum chlorogenic acids content in the beverage was obtained when the infusion was prepared with 2 g of mate tea, in 300 mL of water at 95 °C, under infusion for 16 min. The optimal conditions were applied for the preparation of beverages from 15 commercial samples of yerba mate tea, and it was observed that the sum of the concentration of the four compounds showed variation of up to 79 times between the average of the samples, which can be attributed to climatic conditions of cultivation of the plant and/or of processing.  相似文献

This study aimed to develop and validate a standard area diagram set (SADs) to help assess rust severity caused by Austropuccinia psidii on eucalyptus leaves. The SADs has eight colour images of leaves with severity values ranging from 0.97% to 37.3%. The SADs were validated by 16 raters, who assessed the same set of 50 images twice: the first without the SADs and the second using it as an aid. Accuracy and precision of the estimates were determined based on Lin's concordance correlation coefficient, and the inter‐rater reliability was measured using the coefficient of determination (R2) and intraclass correlation. The estimates of severity of eucalyptus rust were more accurate, precise and reliable using SADs. These results demonstrate the value of SADs for several activities, including epidemiological studies, treatments comparison, disease monitoring, decision‐making in eucalyptus rust management measures, and in breeding programs.  相似文献

Fish communities’ organisation is a challenging task due to global, local and temporal variations related to biotic and abiotic factors, highlighting anthropic activities. The Verde River Basin (VRB) was chosen as a model to the fish community study due to its complexity, presenting a longitudinal gradient of degradation. The ichthyofauna and abiotic factors were sampled during twelve months in four sites. Analyses employed rarefaction curves with Hill numbers estimators and canonical correspondence analysis. The endemic Apareiodon sp. (not described), Hypostomus albopunctatus, H. strigaticeps, Oligosarcus paranensis, Neoplecostomus yapo and Trichomycterus diabolus were associated with structurally complex and well‐preserved environments. In contrary, Astyanax aff. fasciatus, Corydoras ehrhardti, Geophagus brasiliensis, H. ancistroides and Phalloceros harpagos showed tolerance to impacted environments. The methods here employed allowed to identify and explain differences in the ichthyofauna structure, distinguishing the influence of spatial, temporal and human effects on the fish communities.  相似文献

A 13‐year‐old Quarter Horse mare was presented to the Ontario Veterinary College Teaching Hospital with chronic progressive respiratory noise and exercise intolerance. Severe respiratory stridor associated with a laryngeal mass was seen on upper airway endoscopy. Ultrasonography revealed an intra‐cartilagenous mass and allowed for a guided biopsy. Histological analysis of the mass characterised a neuroendocrine tumour and the mare was subjected to euthanasia due to the poor prognosis. Ultrasound examination was paramount in making the diagnosis and facilitating the biopsy. To our knowledge, neuroendocrine tumours have not previously been reported in the equine larynx.  相似文献
