Adults of a phosphine-resistant strain of Sitophilus oryzae (L) were exposed to constant phosphine concentrations of 0.0035-0.9mg litre(-1) for periods of between 20 and 168h at 25 degrees C, and the effects of time and concentration on mortality were quantified. Adults were also exposed to a series of treatments lasting 48, 72 or 168 h at 25 degrees C, during which the concentration of phosphine was varied. The aim of this study was to determine whether equations from experiments using constant concentrations could be used to predict the efficacy of changing phosphine concentrations against adults of S oryzae. A probit plane without interaction, in which the logarithms of time (t) and concentration (C) were variables, described the effects of concentration and time on mortality in experiments with constant concentrations. A derived equation of the form C(n)t = k gave excellent predictions of toxicity when applied to data from changing concentration experiments. The results suggest that for resistant S oryzae adults there is nothing inherently different between constant and changing concentration regimes, and that data collected from fixed concentrations can be used to develop equations for predicting mortality in fumigations in which phosphine concentration changes. This approach could simplify the prediction of efficacy of typical fumigations in which concentrations tend to rise and then fall over a period of days.  相似文献

Ninety-two purebred Jersey fetuses from clinically normal dams derived from a variety of sources but unexposed to experimental infection, were killed between 80 and 260 days after conception and dissected to provide basic parameters of a normal population. Organs and tissues were weighed and measured and the equations for the regression of the values on fetal age evaluated. Growth followed a sigmoid curve with rapid changes in growth rate between 140 and 170 days' gestation. While a few variables increased their growth rate over the late fetal period, the majority maintained a low even rate of growth. Thyroid and cerebellum weights showed a marked reduction in growth rate at this time. Long bone length and crown-anus length were the most predictable parameters for a given gestational age.  相似文献

The investigation involved 52 cases of wildebeest-derived malignant catarrhal fever in 1986 and 1989 in a herd of cattle kept in camps adjacent to a game farm harbouring a herd of approximately 330 blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus). In the outbreaks, 34 cows and 18 calves died as result of the disease. The exceptionally high incidence of the disease in both cows and their calves, the low incidence in calves of unaffected cows, the relatively short period between the death of cows and their calves as well as the occurrence of the disease in 2 calves born after their mothers had been moved away from wildebeest, are indicative of transmission among cows and calves. The death of at least 6 calves within 6 weeks of birth is ascribed to intra-uterine infection while some calves that survived longer may have acquired the infection from other cattle or from wildebeest.  相似文献

Conventionally-reared sheep were inoculated with (3.0 ± 0.6 × 107) viable Pasteurella haemolytica type A1 by the intratracheal route and were killed immediately (0-time) or 2, 4, 12, 16, 24, 48 or 72 h later. Lung-wash cells and free bacteria were recovered by pulmonary layage.The number of recoverable bacteria tended to increase between 0-time and 4 h post-in-oculation (p.i.) then decline rapidly over the next 8 h. However, the rate of clearance was extremely variable and viable bacteria were recovered from 35 animals at 48 h p.i. and from 15 at 72 h p.i.In parallel with the clearance of the majority of the bacteria, total neutrophil numbers in the lung-wash rose to a peak of (36 ± 6) × 108 cells/lung, which was, on average, 70-fold higher than 0-time levels. Their numbers remained constant from 12 to 24 h p.i. then fell to be 5-fold above 0-time levels at 72 h p.i. Macrophage numbers rose slowly throughout the experiment but most of the increase occurred between 24 and 48 h p.i. They reached a peak of (17 ± 11) × 108 cells/lung at 48 h i.p. which was 3-fold higher than 0-time levels.  相似文献

Turkey meningo-encephalitis is a neuroparalytic disease of turkeys first described and shown to be caused by a flavivirus in Israel. During 1978 a similar disease was observed in South Africa. In addition to the lesions described in Israel, myocarditis, regression of the ovary and egg peritonitis were constant findings. The similarity in host range, symptoms and pathological changes produced by the virus isolated locally and in Israel and the serological cross-reaction between the 2 virus isolates indicate that they are identical.  相似文献

Cowdria ruminantium was cultivated in a calf endothelial cell line after the cells had been irradiated at 45 & 90 GY. Another experiment in which the inoculum and non-irradiated cells were centrifuged together also yielded positive results. In some irradiated cultures, colonies of organisms could be demonstrated microscopically up to 70 days after the cultures had been inoculated with infected tick stabilate. The infectivity of cultures, even after 4 passages and 88 days post-inoculation, was demonstrated by their intravenous injection in sheep.  相似文献

During the 1974/75 lambing season numerous reports were received from various parts of the Republic of South Africa and South West Africa of severe abdominal distension in ewes after vaccination with the attenuated Rift Valley fever and/or attenuated Wesselsbron disease vaccine. The ewes were vaccinated at different stages of gestation in spite of recommendations to the contrary, the syndrome being especially obvious in ewes immunized with one or both of these vaccines during the first trimester of pregnancy. In some of the flocks hydrops amnii was recorded in as many as 15% of the ewes. Many of the ewes so affected showed a prolonged gestation of up to 6-7 months and, towards the end of gestation, were unable to rise or walk. They eventually died of ketosis, hypostatic pneumonia and complications due to dystocia. The foetuses examined were malformed and larger than normal with a mass of 3,6-6,7 kg. They usually showed arthrogryposis, brachygnathy inferior, hydranencephaly, hypoplasia or segmental aplasia of the spinal cord and neurogenic muscular atrophy. The amnion contained 8,0-18,0 1 of amniotic fluid, the endometrium was oedematous, and cystic tube-like dilatations, 1-10 mm in diameter, filled with a clear fluid, were scattered in the endometrium. No definite conclusions as to the aetiology of the syndrome could be drawn from serological tests performed on the ewes, lambs or foetuses. Preliminary experimental work confirmed previous observations that the attenuated Wesselsbron disease vaccine virus is responsible for this syndrome and that the wild-type virus is also implicated. In addition, the attenuated Rift Valley fever vaccine virus was found to the responsible for arthrogryposis and hydranencephaly without hydrops amnii and for micrencephaly and arthrogryposis associated with hydrops amnii in the ewe.  相似文献

Immunohistochemical (IHC) testing and electron microscopy have implicated Papillomavirus (PV) as the etiologic agent for equine papillomas and aural plaques, but Equine papillomavirus (EPV) DNA has yet to be demonstrated in these lesions by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The purpose of this study was to evaluate formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues from naturally occurring cases of equine papillomas, aural plaques, and sarcoids for the presence of EPV DNA by means of PCR and for the presence of PV antigen by means of IHC testing. We used EPV-specific primers that amplified a region of 384 base pairs (bp) spanning the E4 and L2 genes of the EPV genome and consensus PV primers that amplified a 102-bp region of the L1 gene. Group-specific PV structural antigens were detected with the use of a streptavidin-biotin-alkaline phosphatase IHC stain. With IHC testing, 23 of 38 papillomas, 4 of 9 aural plaques, and 0 of 10 sarcoids were positive for PV antigen; EPV DNA was found in 20 of the 38 papillomas and 1 of the 10 sarcoids but 0 of the 9 aural plaques. The consensus primers did not amplify novel PV DNA in any of the tissues. Nucleotide sequencing of viral DNA from 7 papillomas amplified with EPV-specific primers revealed DNA fragments that were 96% to 99% identical to known EPV sequences. Some samples had nucleotide substitutions in common, which suggests infection with related strains. Together, EPV DNA or PV antigen (or both) was demonstrated in 26 (68%) of the 38 equine papillomas. Although aural plaques contained PV antigen, they were negative for EPV DNA; therefore, we hypothesize that aural plaques contain a PV distinct from EPV.  相似文献
