STUDIES ON VENEREAL TRANSMISSION OF CAMPYLOBACTER FETUS BY IMMUNISED BULLS

Temporary contamination of the penis and prepuce with Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis and Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis biotype intermedius may occur when immunised bulls mate with infected heifers. However, 2 experiments showed that this contamination was not a significant cause of genital infection in susceptible heifers that subsequently mated with bulls.     

Enzootic bovine leukosis: Preparation of an antigen for the agar gel immunodiffusion test and statistical comparison with other antigens

The preparation of an antigen for the agar gel immunodiffusion test prepared by ultrafiltration of cell culture supernatant (chronically infected fetal lamb kidney cells) is described. The antigen obtained was compared by the single radial immunodiffusion test with an antigen prepared by ammonium sulfate precipitation (30%) and the commercial antigens (Pitman Moore, Seromed). The positive serum was used either undiluted or diluted 1:16 to test for the internal (P 24) and the external antigens (Gp 60) respectively.The results obtained indicated that the antigen prepared by ultrafiltration appeared to be much superior to the others, and contained Gp 60 which detects the commonly found antibodies in bovine leukosis virus-infected cattle.     

Equine muscle fiber types: A histological and histochemical analysis of select thoroughbred yearlings

Equine skeletal muscle was histologically and histochemically analyzed in orderto measure fiber composition. Well-sampled open muscle biopsies were obtained from the semitendinosus muscle in select yearling Thoroughbreds. Each biopsy was sectioned and stained for the Harris Hematoxylin and Eosin and the modified Gomori Trichrome in order to demonstrate the basic muscle fiber morphology delineating intra and extracellular elements. A thirdstain, CA++ activated myosin Adenosine Triphosphatase at pH 9.4 was used to differentiate between specific types on the basis of enzyme activities. Subsequent differentiation of Type I slow twitch and Type II fast twitch muscle fibers was assessed on the basisof staining intensity. The high predominance of Type II fast twitch fibers ranged from 85.1 to 100 % with a mean of 90.5 %. Racing records, as two- and three-year-olds, were monitored in order to qualitatively compare histochemical results with performance achievements. While caution must be exercised, results of this investigation suggested that it may be possible, at an early age to partially predict the potential of each horse to adapt to training and to compete successfully in races of varying distances.     

PREVENTION OF SALMONELLA TYPHIMURIUM INFECTION IN POULTRY BY PRETREATMENT OF CHICKENS AND POULTS WITH INTESTINAL EXTRACTS

Day-old chickens or turkey poults when pretreated with an oral dose of intestinal fluid froma healthy adult bird, were considerably more resistant to the subsequent establishment of Salmonella typhimurium in their intestinal tract than were non-treated chickens or turkey poults. Caecal fluid was more effective as a pretreatment than were washings taken from other parts of the gastro-intestinal tract of a healthy adult bird. This increased resistance of pretreated chickens or poults is thought to result from the rapid establishment of a conventional indigenous microflora which inhabits establishment and growth by the invading enteric pathogen.
