  1. Seagrasses such as Zostera marina L. play a key role in coastal ecosystems because of the ecological goods and services that they provide, enhancing biodiversity, productivity and carbon sequestration. Despite their ecological relevance, their distribution is, to date, insufficiently documented and it is estimated that only one‐quarter of their global extent is mapped.
  2. This study aims to develop a new method to accurately detect and map subtidal seagrass meadows, using Irish seagrass populations as a case study. This method consists of four steps: (i) the development of a species distribution model (SDM); (ii) the use of satellite‐derived images to visually appraise the potential presence and extent of seagrass beds; (iii) field surveys to validate the presence or absence of the seagrass; and finally (iv) the construction of an up‐to‐date detailed map of the seagrass distribution for the region under investigation.
  3. Results indicate that along the Irish coast, and in western regions in particular, the actual distribution of seagrass is considerably greater than is currently reported. Using the proposed method, 16 new regions occupied by seagrass in areas of interest in County Galway (Kilkieran Bay, Bertraghboy Bay, and Chasla Bay) were identified, accounting for a total of 267.92 ha, which increased the previously documented distribution in this area by 44.74%.
  4. In this study, we demonstrate the potential of this novel method to efficiently identify and map undocumented subtidal seagrass meadows. As seagrass habitats are under threat globally, the development of new mapping strategies is a critical contribution to current international efforts in seagrass monitoring and management.

Acetolactate synthase (ALS) activity extracted from Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar. viciae has been characterized. The optimum pH for extraction was 7·6 and for the assay 7·0. The Km for pyruvate was 7·2 mM , and the enzyme was saturated at 40 mM . An obligatory requirement of TPP and Mg2+ for full ALS activity was observed. Valine was the only branched-chain amino acid that caused ALS feedback inhibition. The specific activity of Rhizobium ALS was nearly 20 times the activity found in pea (Pisum sativum) leaves. Bacteroids from pea nodules also showed high ALS activity, and the nodule plant fraction had higher ALS activity than other plant tissues. ALS sensitivity to imazethapyr was also dependent on the source: ALS activity of free-living Rhizobium and bacteroids was slightly more tolerant than that of other pea tissues, but the differences were less than those found in rates of specific activity. It is proposed that the high ALS activity expressed by Rhizobium, both as free-living bacteria and as bacteroids, is related to the growth tolerance of rhizobia to imazethapyr and is also related to the relative tolerance of symbiotic pea plants. © 1998 SCI  相似文献

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of a new strain of Lactobacillus buchneri (UFLA SIL 72) isolated from sugar cane (Saccharum spp.) silage and the addition of propionic acid [1% based on fresh matter (FM)] to silages treated with and without calcium oxide (1% of FM) at 60 and 170 d of ensiling. A randomized block design with a 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was used to analyse the results. The use of calcium oxide reduced the ethanol content and neutral detergent fibre in all silages, increased pH values and favoured the growth of clostridia and yeasts. The addition of propionic acid reduced the yeast population, but it was not able to reduce ethanol content of silage. The addition of L. buchneri resulted in silages with higher concentration of propionate, reduced the levels of ethanol and reduced the population of clostridia in all silages. The use of calcium oxide is not recommended for silage of sugar cane.  相似文献

Uterine and cervical size of Holstein dairy cows is reported among reasons for a decline in dairy cow fertility. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to (a) determine whether size of the cervix and uterus at 4 weeks postpartum impacted subsequent fertility at first service in Jersey cattle, (b) determine whether progesterone level at 4 weeks postpartum impacted cyclicity and (c) the association of the presence of corpus luteum and uterus and cervix size. Body condition scores at calving, presence of postpartum diseases, parity number and milk weights were taken from lactating Jersey dairy cows (N = 147) for 28 days postpartum. During the fourth week postpartum, a blood sample was obtained for progesterone concentration, and transrectal ultrasonography was performed by a high-resolution ultrasound machine to determine cervical and uterine horn diameter, as well as ovarian structures measurements. Correcting for parity number, BCS at calving, presence of diseases and milk yield, cows with a cervix >2.54 ± 0.63 cm and uterine horn >2.25 ± 0.59 cm were less likely to become pregnant at first service (p = .04 and p = .003, respectively). The cows with larger cervix had a trend to be less likely to have a corpus luteum present at the 4th week of lactation (p = .067). Cows with larger uterine horn size were less likely to have a corpus luteum present at the 4th week of lactation (p = .015). It is concluded that a larger cervix and/or uterus during the postpartum was associated negatively with fertility and cyclicity in Jersey cows.  相似文献

Olive knot disease is characterised by the development of galls on Olea europaea stems as a result of infection by Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. savastanoi. Protein differential accumulation during the first week of infection was studied using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry to investigate the biochemical changes occurring in infected tissues and to understand the factors involved in bacteria pathogenesis and plant response to infection. Common infection symptoms were obtained in 1 year-old plants of two Portuguese cultivars, ‘Galega’ and ‘Cordovil de Serpa’ using the strain NCPPB 2327. The comparison of protein patterns of non-inoculated stem tissues, stem tissues inoculated with water or with the strain NCPPB 2327 led to the detection of differentially expressed infection-related proteins. Moreover a distinct protein pattern was obtained between cultivars in response to infection. The differential protein expression was characterised by qualitative and quantitative variation. Among the differentially expressed proteins were the bacterial P. savastanoi orthologues of outer membrane porin F, the tellurium resistance protein, aconitate hydratase 2 and a hypothetical protein with unknown function. From O. europaea, protein orthologues of enolase and calcium-dependent protein kinase were found to be differentially expressed. Results are discussed in the context of the molecular basis of plant–pathogen interactions in the search for markers for the presence of the bacterium in plant tissues.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Studies were carried out to evaluate the effects of Manilkara subsericea extracts and triterpenes on the development of two species of agricultural pest insects, Oncopelus fasciatus and Dysdercus peruvianus. RESULTS: All treatments of insects with M. subsericea extracts induced mortality, delayed development and inhibited moulting. Some extracts assayed (FH, FB and FD in D. peruvianus, and FH, FB and FEA in O. fasciatus) also produced body deformities in the few adults that emerged. Other extracts (FH, FEA, FB, FD and LET in both insects), however, induced either permanent (overaged) or extranumerary nymphs, both of which were unable to achieve the adult stage and reproductive status. The insects were also treated with triterpenes (α‐ and β‐amyrin acetates) which showed high lethality at 30 days after treatment and delayed the intermoult period so that overaged nymphs were detected. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that extracts and triterpenes from Manilkara subsericea act as potent growth inhibitors of phytophagous hemipteran nymphs. It is also concluded that the mixture of several different molecules in the extracts used produces synergic effects that do not occur after using the triterpenes (PFT) alone. Psorosis is a citrus disease of undemonstrated etiology that can be diagnosed by biological indexing on sweet orange seedlings followed by a cross protection test. Its presumed causal agent is Citrus psorosis virus(CPsV), type species of the genus Ophiovirus. We compared detection of CPsV by ELISA, RT-PCR, molecular hybridization and immunosorbent electron microscopy, and examined its association with psorosis disease in 11 biologically characterized isolates and in 47 uncharacterized field sources by observation of field symptoms and by biological indexing including the cross protection test. Detection of CPsV by any of the four procedures always coincided with diagnosis of psorosis by cross protection, but it did not always correlate with observation of symptoms thought to be specific, in field trees or in graft-inoculated indicator plants. Trials to detect CPsV by ELISA, molecular hybridization and RT-PCR in citrus sources from different geographical origins, presumed to be psorosis-infected on the basis of field symptoms or reaction of indicator plants, were sometimes unsuccessful, indicating that psorosis symptoms may be induced by causes other than CPsV.  相似文献
