Biodiversity and ecosystem services play key roles in future economic strategies seeking to promote development and prosperity. This study assesses the status of biodiversity and flow of ecosystem services from selected forest types in the Western Ghats. At the sampling sites, the number of tree species ranged from 16 to 79 per hectare depending on the forest type. The estimates for Shannon–Wiener index for trees in the evergreen, moist deciduous and dry deciduous forest plots were 3.02, 2.9 and 1.54, respectively. The total biomass carbon stocks in evergreen, moist deciduous and dry deciduous forests in the study area was 229, 221 and 189 t C/ha, respectively.Analysis of dependency patterns of local communities on forest resources indicated a high dependency on provisional services such as fuelwood, manure and fodder. The study records the highest dependency rates for fuelwood,ranging between 72 and 100% for the three forest types and indicates that forest ecosystems underpin the well-being of the population dependent directly and indirectly on them. 相似文献

A bacterial marker can be used to determine the portion of fecal N that is of bacterial origin, as well as the effect of dietary factors on the bacterial N in feces of the dog. Two experiments were conducted to determine the efficacy of diaminopimelic acid (DAPA) and purines as bacterial markers in dogs. In Exp. 1, five adult female dogs were fed the same commercial diet. In Exp. 2, 50 dogs were fed one of four test diets (as-fed basis): a prebiotic-free control or diets containing either 1% chicory, 1% mannanoligosaccharide (MOS), or 1% chicory plus 1% MOS. Fresh feces were collected in both experiments and used to isolate a bacteria-rich sample (BRS) by differential centrifugation. In Exp. 1, the BRS had a N:purine ratio of 0.66 and N:DAPA ratio of 18.9. The CV for the N:purine ratio (20.7%) was much higher than that for the N:DAPA ratio (6.1%), indicating that DAPA resulted in a less variable estimate of fecal bacterial N. Using either marker, approximately 50% of the fecal N was estimated to be of bacterial origin. In Exp. 2, the N:DAPA ratio of the BRS did not differ (P = 0.14) among treatments. The BRS from dogs fed prebiotic-containing diets had treatment averages for N:DAPA ratios ranging from 16.9 to 18.5, whereas BRS from dogs fed the control diet had a ratio of 15.9. Averaged across all dogs, approximately 46% of fecal N was of bacterial origin. When calculating fecal bacterial concentrations using the average N:DAPA ratio for all dogs, little difference existed in the estimation compared with using individual values. The value resulting from use of the average ratio was approximately 13% higher than when using the individual ratios for dogs fed the control diet, which was due to the lower N:DAPA ratio for dogs fed the control diet compared with dogs fed the other treatments. Based on the consistency of the N:DAPA ratio of the BRS, DAPA seems to be a suitable marker for estimation of bacterial N in the feces of dogs. 相似文献

Two in vitro experiments were conducted to evaluate the ability of small intestinal bacteria of dogs to ferment native and extruded cereal grains and potato starch and cereal grain and potato flours. Substrates included barley, corn, potato, rice, sorghum, and wheat. In addition to testing native grains and flours, extruded substrates also were tested. Substrates were extruded at low temperatures (LT; 79 to 93 degrees C) and high temperatures (HT; 124 to 140 degrees C) using a Wenger extruder (model TX-52). Substrates varied widely in concentrations of rapidly digestible starch (RDS), slowly digestible starch (SDS), resistant starch (RS), and total starch (TS). Extrusion of most substrates at HT vs LT resulted in increased RDS and decreased RS concentrations. Organic matter disappearance (OMD) values attributed to microbial fermentation for a 5-h period were as high as 27% for native extruded substrates (LT potato starch) and 39% for potato flour. Average OMD was higher for cereal and potato flours than for native extruded substrates (29.9 vs 25.4%). Average molar percentages of short-chain fatty acids produced from all substrates fermented for 5 h were 73, 14, and 13% (acetate, propionate, and butyrate, respectively). Average lactate production for substrates ranked as follows: flours > native and extruded cereal grains and potato starch (0.33 and 0.18 mmol/g OM, respectively). When the objective is to characterize landscapes with respect to relative degree and type of forest (or other critical habitat) fragmentation, it is difficult to decide which variables to measure and what type of discriminatory analysis to apply. It is also desirable to incorporate multiple measurement scales. In response, a new method has been developed that responds to changes in both the marginal and spatial distributions of land cover in a raster map. Multiscale features of the map are captured in a sequence of successively coarsened resolutions based on the random filter for degrading raster map resolutions. Basically, the entropy of spatial pattern associated with a particular pixel resolution is calculated, conditional on the pattern of the next coarser parent resolution. When the entropy is plotted as a function of changing resolution, we obtain a simple two-dimensional graph called a conditional entropy profile, thus providing a graphical visualization of multi-scale fragmentation patterns.Using eight-category raster maps derived from 30-meter resolution LANDSAT Thematic Mapper images, the conditional entropy profile was obtained for each of 102 watersheds covering the state of Pennsylvania (USA). A suite of more conventional single-resolution landscape measurements was also obtained for each watershed using the FRAGSTATS program. After dividing the watersheds into three major physiographic provinces, cluster analysis was performed within each province using various combinations of the FRAGSTATS variables, land cover proportions and variables describing the conditional entropy profiles. Measurements of both spatial pattern and marginal land cover proportions were necessary to clearly discriminate the watersheds into distinct clusters for most of the state; however, the Piedmont province essentially only required the land cover proportions. In addition to land cover proportions, only the variables describing a conditional entropy profile appeared to be necessary for the Ridge and Valley province, whereas only the FRAGSTATS variables appeared to be necessary for the Appalachian Plateaus province. Meanwhile, the graphical representation of conditional entropy profiles provided a visualization of multi-scale fragmentation that was quite sensitive to changing pattern. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Near-isogenic lines (NILs) with resistance for scald in seventh generation backcross with 'Ingrid' as recurrent parent (RP) were tested with seven differential isolates of Rhynchosporium secalis in Norway and Canada. NILs of 'Turk', 'Brier', 'CI 8162', 'La Mesita', 'Hispont', 'Atlas 46', 'Modoc', 'Hudson', 'Abyssinian', 'Steudelli', and 'CI 2222' also were evaluated for field reactions. The genetic characterization of the NILs (degree of isogeneity with Ingrid) and with each other was carried out. The molecular marker pattern shows that the backcrossing program has resulted in from 86.3 to 100% RP genome in the NILs, depending on the marker system. On an average, 96% RP genome was found in the NILs. There were certain consistent (pairwise) differences between the NILs and RP on chromosomes 3H and 7H. Both chromosomes are known to contain loci conferring resistance to R. secalis, indicating successful introgression from the donors into the NILs. Approximately two-thirds of the observed RP-NIL polymorphisms were linked to the assumed resistance in the NIL. Based on the marker and phenotypic analyses of the NILs, suggestions for a more appropriate and updated terminology of genes for resistance to R. secalis in barley are made. A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of hybrid (BJ 104, MBH 110, CM 46 and GHB 27) and composites (PSB 3, PSB 8, WCC 75 and Local) of pearl-millet on the soils (pH 7.1, Organic carbon 0.5 %, P2 O5 9.6 kg/ha, K2 O 80 kg/ha, soil depth 65 cm and profile moisture 8.6 cm) of Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute, Jhansi under extreme drought condition (340 mm total precipitation during the crop season). It was observed that hybrids, by and large, gave higher production than composites and local variety even failed to bloom. Further the highest yield from hybrid MBH 110 was due to its drought escaping character (earliness), drought enduring capacity (CSI-12), efficient translocation and better sink strength. BJ 104 and CM 46, though were also drought escaping and possessed capacity to endure drought but inferior to MBH 110 in sink strength which was ultimately reflected in production.
An appraisal of the various agro-physiological traits revealed that earliness, high harvest index, low CSI value (chlorophyll stability index) and high sink strength were directly correlated with productivity of cultivars under drought condition which could be used as a guide lines for breeding drought resistant cultivars of pearl millet. 相似文献

Genotyping of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) is important for precise classification of bacterium and for understanding the molecular epidemiology. The present
study reports detection and typing of the MAP from milk. On the basis of clinical signs of diarrhea and/or weakness, the dairy
animals suspected for Johne’s disease were screened by Ziehl–Neelsen staining of fecal samples. The milk samples from 13 selected
animals were processed for DNA extraction and direct IS900 polymerase chain reaction (PCR). MAP identified by IS900 PCR was
genotyped using IS1311 PCR-restriction endonuclease analysis (REA). IS900 milk PCR revealed 30.8% animals positive for MAP,
including 40% of the moderate and 50% of the heavy fecal shedders. All infected animals showed Bison type MAP in IS1311 PCR-REA.
IS900 PCR can be used for screening of milk for MAP; however, the method needs to be evaluated for subclinical cases. IS1311

BACKGROUND: Tetraconazole and difenoconazole are triazole fungicides with proven bioefficacy against grapevine powdery mildew disease. In the present work, the authors explored the residue dynamics of these two compounds in grapes and determined their preharvest intervals (PHIs) corresponding to multiple field applications at recommended and double rates considering the most critical use pattern in Indian viticulture. A confirmatory residue analysis method was validated for trace-level determination of both the compounds. RESULTS: Dissipation of both the fungicides followed non-linear two-compartment first + first-order rate kinetics. Tetraconazole and difenoconazole dissipated with PHIs of 12.5 and 25.5 days at recommended rates and of 28.5 and 38.5 days at double application rates respectively. On all the sampling days, the residues were below the maximum permissible intake, indicating consumer safety. The residues in the grape samples drawn from the farms where these two fungicides were applied, maintaining the above PHIs, were below their respective MRLs. CONCLUSION: The rate of degradation of tetraconazole was faster than that of difenoconazole. Thus, the growers will have the choice of using these new chemicals for the management of powdery mildews in succession, difenoconazole at early growth stages, followed by tetraconazole during the last month before harvest. The recommendations of PHIs proved to be effective in minimizing residues in farm grape samples. Thus, this work is of high significance to the grape industry of India, and will support the registration of these new fungicides for effective management of powdery mildews with minimum residue problems. 相似文献
