Profile characteristics, and form and surface activity of inorganic phosphorus in a deep red Kenya coffee soil (Nitosol) 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The paper examines some of the physical and chemical properties of a deep red friable clay profile (Nitosol) developed in the Kenya highlands over trachyte. This soil is widely planted to coffee. The profile is remarkable for the depth and uniformity of the B horizon and for its stable microaggregation. Despite a clay content of 50–60% throughout the deep solum, the soil feels and handles like a loam. Work with radioactive phosphorus on samples from the profile and from nearby experimental plots under coffee showed that the activity, and the amounts, of surface phosphate fractions decreased in the order Fe-P, Al-P and Ca-P, but the order of decrease of specific surface activity was Al-P, Fe-P, Ca-P. A ten year survey of water quality in 330 Massachusetts streams was conducted to examine the rate and pattern of recovery from acidification. Meta-analysis was used to combine the results of the 330 non-parametric trend tests into an overall test for trend in a variety of water quality variables including pH, acid neutralizing capacity (ANC), and major inorganic ions. Analysis of trends in the raw data indicates both pH and ANC are increasing. After detrending for variations in stream runoff, we estimate the streams are recovering from acidification at a rate of +0.021 pH units/year and +2.4 μeq/L/year, for pH and ANC respectively. These trends appear to be related to declines in sulfate (–1.8 μeq/L/year), while base cation trends were mixed. Meta-analysis reveals the trends are not always homogeneous between seasons or between sites. While it is commonly assumed that the low ANC systems are most ‘sensitive’ to changes in acid or base inputs, we found the greatest rates of change in ANC were associated with the high ANC systems. The greatest increases in pH were seen in the low ANC streams as expected. The results also suggest streams respond quickly to changes in precipitation inputs and stream monitoring networks may be valuable as an early detection technique for changes in environmental quality. 相似文献

A 5-year old, spayed, mongrel was presented with intractable diarrhoea. Histopathologic examination of biopsy specimens taken during exploratory laparotomy revealed acid-fast organisms in the spleen, caecum, and colon. The dog was subsequently destroyed. At post-mortem, lesions were also observed in the liver and lymph nodes. Mycobacterium avium was cultured from splenic tissue. Infection of dogs with this organism is rare and the clinical picture described unusual. 相似文献

Repeated infusions of a mixture of oxytetracycline and streptomycin into the wood of initially symptomless clove trees exposed to natural infection by Sumatra disease resulted in a delay in symptom onset and slower rates of symptom development compared with untreated trees. The numbers of bacterially occluded vessels in root samples of treated trees were significantly fewer than those from controls. These results strongly support the hypothesis that a xylem-limited. Gram-negative bacterium, known to be consistently associated with Sumatra disease symptoms, is the causal agent. The productive life of treated trees was usefully extended but some phytotoxicity was observed, resulting in leaf scorching and stunted flower buds. In view of the high value of the crop, antibiotic therapy merits further investigation as a short-term control measure. 相似文献

Ureterocolonic anastomosis (UCA) was performed in 10 dogs with transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder trigone or the urethra, or both. All grossly visible tumor was excised. All of the dogs recovered from anesthesia and surgery and had anal continence with no urine leakage. One dog died of undetermined causes 7 days after surgery. Nine dogs survived 1 to 5 months. The owners of eight of the dogs considered their dog's quality of life to be acceptable. Four dogs were euthanatized because of neurologic disease, three of which also had nausea and vomiting. The neurologic and gastrointestinal signs may have been caused by hyperammonemia, metabolic acidosis, and uremia. Blood ammonia levels were elevated in two dogs with neurologic signs. Hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis that was reversible with bicarbonate therapy was diagnosed in five dogs. All of the dogs were azotemic because of intestinal recycling of urea. Serum creatinine concentrations increased in four dogs after surgery. Drug-induced renal disease may have developed in two dogs. Pyelonephritis developed in five kidneys, two of which had outflow obstruction and two had bilateral hydroureteronephrosis before the UCA. In this small number of dogs, surgical excision of transitional cell carcinoma was not curative with six dogs having confirmed metastatic lesions at the time of death. 相似文献

The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) signal-void sign is a CSF signal loss, especially on T2-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images. The CSF signal-void sign is often seen in small dogs with hydrocephalus and syringomyelia. In people, this sign is attributed to high velocity or turbulent CSF flow resulting from normal arterial pulsations, but is more pronounced in hydrocephalic patients with reduced intracranial compliance. If dogs are similar, then detection of this sign might be influenced by cardiovascular variables affected by anesthesia or related to intracranial compliance (e.g., blood pressure) or that affect CSF flow (e.g., heart rate). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate whether the CSF signal-void sign is associated with these cardiovascular variables. The sample population consisted of 53 small-breed (<15 kg) anesthetized dogs undergoing spin echo, T2-weighted MR imaging of the neurocranium. Heart rate, blood pressure (systolic, mean, diastolic, pulse), and end-tidal CO2 were recorded and dogs were grouped as having a CSF signal-void sign in the mesencephalic aqueduct (19/53) or not (34/53). Normality was confirmed and t -tests used. No statistical difference was detected between groups for any of the cardiovascular variables. However, the sample size was too small to accept the null hypothesis that no difference existed between groups for any of the variables assessed. Therefore, although it is uncertain whether the investigated variables alter the frequency of detecting a CSF signal-void sign, any possible relationship does not appear strong. 相似文献

Objective— To investigate the efficacy of adhesive incise drapes in reducing bacterial contamination of clean canine surgical wounds.
Study Design— Randomized clinical trial.
Animals— Dogs (n=100) having elective ovariohysterectomy or stifle surgery.
Methods— Dogs were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: drape or no drape. Swabs obtained from the inner edge of the surgical wound at the beginning (swab 1) and end (swab 2) of surgery were submitted for microbial culture. Number of colony forming units was counted for all positive cultures and change in bacterial counts between swabs 1 and 2 was calculated. Percentage adhesive drape adherence at the end of surgery was calculated from a digital photograph of the surgical site. Duration of surgery/anesthesia and the anesthetic induction agent used were recorded.
Results— There was a significant increase in bacterial counts between swabs 1 and 2 ( P =.001). Wound contamination was 14% (6 drape; 8 no drape; P =0.78) with Staphylococcus spp. most commonly isolated. Median percentage drape adherence at the end of surgery was 89.3% (0–100%). Duration of anesthesia was significantly related to wound contamination ( P =.013), but duration of surgery and anesthesia induction agent were not.
Conclusions— Adhesive incise drapes did not reduce wound contamination of clean canine surgical wounds.
Clinical Relevance— Use of adhesive incise drapes in clean surgical procedures is of questionable benefit in dogs. 相似文献
