Lone atrial fibrillation in a dog

An intact male Pointer aged 9 year was found to have atrial fibrillation (AF). Thoracic radiography and echocardiography as well as routine blood work revealed no cardiac disease. Thus, the dog was diagnosed as lone AF. The arrhythmia disappeared 6 hr after the initiation of the supportive therapy, and relapse was not observed.     

Hepatic lymphangiomatosis in a young dog

A 9-month-old intact male American cocker spaniel was referred because of hepatomegaly and ascites. Ultrasonographic evaluation of the liver revealed congestion and increased parenchymal echogenicity with focal and more hyperechoic nodules. Histopathology of the hepatic lesion revealed diffuse, ill-defined vascular proliferation. A single layer of endothelial cells, which showed signs of minimal cellular atypia, lined the irregular vessels. On immunohistochemistry, the proliferative endothelial cells lining the irregular vessels were positive for an antiserum to factor VIII related antigen. Based on these findings, the dog was diagnosed with hepatic lymphangiomatosis.     

Evaluation of embedding strength on Uruguayan wood to apply the European yield theory for double shear bolted joint

The main objective of this study was to evaluate embedding strength on Uruguayan wood to apply the European yield theory (EYT) for double shear bolted joints’ on Eucalyptus grandis H.(EGH). To introduce the dowel-type connection performance, double shear tests were conducted. The embedding tests were conducted to calculate the yield strength of bolted joint by EYT and the compression test, to estimate the embedding strength. The yield strength obtained from the experiments showed a good agreement with the yield strength calculated by EYT method. The yield strength of double shear bolted joint evaluated from compressive strengths is a very close to the yield strength calculated by EYT. The average value and variability of the yield strength of double shear bolted joint calculated by EYT applying the embedding strengths of experimental results were very close to the yield strength or 5 % offset method of experimental results. The results from this study showed a good behavior to structural design with EGH in accordance to the Japanese standard code.     

Glycosphingolipid receptors for pathogenic vibrios in intestines of mariculture fish

Vibrios are highly motile, facultatively anaerobic bacteria that are ubiquitous in aquatic environments and part of the normal intestinal microflora of healthy fish, but some species can cause vibriosis. The adherence of vibrios to host fish intestines is a significant event not only for their survival and growth, but also in terms of pathogenicity. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the adhesion of vibrios to the intestinal tract of fish is not fully understood. We report here the identification of intestinal glycosphingolipid (GSL) receptors to which pathogenic vibrios attach in typical mariculture fish. Thin-layer chromatography overlay assays using five species of ³⁵S-labeled vibrios and intestinal glycosphingolipids of seven species of mariculture fish revealed that all of the fish tested possessed GM3 (NeuAcα2-3Galβ1-4Glcβ1-1′Cer) and/or GM4 (NeuAcα2-3Galβ1-1′Cer) as major acidic intestinal GSLs and that all of the vibrios tested specifically adhered to GM3 and/or GM4. Our results demonstrate that these GSLs were able to function as a receptor for the various vibrios tested. Analysis of the relationship between sugar structure and receptor activity for vibrios revealed that ‘NeuAcα2-3Galβ1-’ is required at the non-reducing end of glycosphingolipids for the bacteria to attach.     

Prevalence of Giardia intestinalis infection in household cats of Tohoku district in Japan

Fecal samples obtained from 600 household cats (244 males and 356 females) kept in 3 prefectures of Tohoku district in Japan were examined for Giardia intestinalis antigen, using a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. G. intestinalis antigen was detected in 40% of the fecal specimens. The factors such as the age, life style or environmental condition of cats could be significantly related to the positive rate of G. intestinalis antigen. In contrast, the investigative district, appearance of feces, sex, breed or origin produced no significant difference in the positive rate. The present results suggest that G. intestinalis infection is widely spread in household cats of Tohoku district.     

Reverted glutathione S-transferase-like genes that influence flower color intensity of carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) originated from excision of a transposable element

A glutathione S-transferase-like gene, DcGSTF2, is responsible for carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) flower color intensity. Two defective genes, DcGSTF2mu with a nonsense mutation and DcGSTF2-dTac1 containing a transposable element dTac1, have been characterized in detail in this report. dTac1 is an active element that produces reverted functional genes by excision of the element. A pale-pink cultivar ‘Daisy’ carries both defective genes, whereas a spontaneous deep-colored mutant ‘Daisy-VPR’ lost the element from DcGSTF2-dTac1. This finding confirmed that dTac1 is active and that the resulting reverted gene, DcGSTF2rev1, missing the element is responsible for this color change. Crosses between the pale-colored cultivar ‘06-LA’ and a deep-colored cultivar ‘Spectrum’ produced segregating progeny. Only the deep-colored progeny had DcGSTF2rev2 derived from the ‘Spectrum’ parent, whereas progeny with pale-colored flowers had defective forms from both parents, DcGSTF2mu and DcGSTF2-dTac1. Thus, DcGSTF2rev2 had functional activity and likely originated from excision of dTac1 since there was a footprint sequence at the vacated site of the dTac1 insertion. Characterizing the DcGSTF2 genes in several cultivars revealed that the two functional genes, DcGSTF2rev1 and DcGSTF2rev2, have been used for some time in carnation breeding with the latter in use for more than half a century.
