L-Cysteine (L-Cys) is a non-essential and glycogenic amino acid. Previously, we reported that the intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of L-Cys induced sedative effects under isolation-induced stress in neonatal chicks. L-Cys has an optical isomer, D-Cys. The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of L-Cys and D-Cys during a stressful condition in chicks. The i.c.v. injection of L-Cys and D-Cys (0.84 µmol) decreased both distress vocalization and spontaneous activity induced by isolation. However, the two cysteine isomers induced different behaviors. L-Cys increased sleep-like behavior while D-Cys caused abnormal behavior including syncope as well as sleep-like behavior. In conclusion, while both L-Cys and D-Cys caused a sedative effect when injected i.c.v, D-Cys caused abnormal behavior and may be detrimental to neonatal chicks. 相似文献

Plant breeding programs in local regions may generate genetic variations that are desirable to local populations and shape adaptability during the establishment of local populations. To elucidate genetic bases for this process, we proposed a new approach for identifying the genetic bases for the traits improved during rice breeding programs; association mapping focusing on a local population. In the present study, we performed association mapping focusing on a local rice population, consisting of 63 varieties, in Hokkaido, the northernmost region of Japan and one of the northern limits of rice cultivation worldwide. Six and seventeen QTLs were identified for heading date and low temperature germinability, respectively. Of these, 13 were novel QTLs in this population and 10 corresponded to the QTLs previously reported based on QTL mapping. The identification of QTLs for traits in local populations including elite varieties may lead to a better understanding of the genetic bases of elite traits. The accurate determination of the wetting soil hydraulic properties for a wide range of water contents is essential for studying and predicting infiltration processes. We present a laboratory infiltration method for determining hydraulic conductivity function, K(θ), in the low-to-medium water content range. An initially air-dry soil core is subjected to infiltration from the bottom where the pressure head, ψbot, is controlled through a membrane. As soon as the wetting front arrives at the soil surface, the top 0.5-cm layer is sliced for measurement of the water content. The ψbot is stepwise increased as the hydraulic equilibrium is nearly attained at each step. The wetting water retention function, ψ(θ), is determined by curve-fitting the equilibrium inflow data and from the independently measured data obtained from vapor equilibrium. The parameter in the K(θ) is estimated inversely using the cumulative inflow and water content of the sliced layer. This method is verified through comparisons with K(θ) obtained by the Boltzmann transform method. Although requiring an additional operation, the slicing procedure is found to be valuable in enhancing the reliability of the optimized parameter. A sensitivity analysis shows that water vapor movement would be negligible under our experimental conditions. 相似文献

The live microbiota ecosystem in the intestine plays a critical role in maintaining the normal physiological and psychological functions in both animals and human beings. However, the chronic effect of microbiota disturbances during prenatal and neonatal developing periods on animal's health remains less studied. In the current study, pregnant ICR mice were fed with an antibiotic diet (7-g nebacitin [bacitracin-neomycin sulphate 2:1]/kg standard diet) from day 14 of conception, and their offspring were provided with the same diet till the termination of the experiments. Dams treated with antibiotics showed increased body weight along with enlarged gut. Antibiotic-treated offspring revealed decreased bodyweight, increased food, water, and sucrose intake. Administration of antibiotics affected corticosterone responsivity to acute 20 min restraint challenge in male pups. In behavior tests, female pups showed decreased movement in open field while male pups revealed decreased latency to open arms in elevated plus maze test and immobility time in tail suspension test. Together, these results suggested that early antibiotic exposure may impact on the food intake, body weight gain, and emotional behavior regulation in mice. 相似文献

SUMMARY: The relationship between mean weights of hatchery-reared masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou smolts at release and the subsequent recovery rates by coastal commercial fisheries in Hokkaido, northern Japan, was investigated using the maximum likelihood method. A strongly positive correlation was observed, showing smolts with a mean of 32.6 g obtained an approximately 20-fold recovery rate of those with a mean of 14.8 g. The model with log-transformed independent variable ( Yi = –11.237 + 4.239 ln Xi ) was selected as the most parsimonious model to represent the release size ( Xi ) and recovery rate ( Yi ) relationship. 相似文献

Predicting periparturient disease risk is of immense value to the dairy industry. Periparturient diseases are interrelated with each other; however, predicting the onset risk of these diseases has predominantly been based on a single blood parameter for a single disease. This study examined a new diagnostic method to predict the risk of periparturient diseases. We conducted cluster analysis of multiple blood constituents from 20 Holstein cattle at 1 week post‐partum, and the cattle were divided into two groups, A or B. We then compared the periparturient and early‐lactation blood constituents of these groups. Group B had significantly higher 3‐hydroxybutyric acid concentrations and were suspected to have subclinical ketosis. Group B also had significantly lower calcium concentrations, with a tendency for subclinical hypocalcemia. We also performed discriminant analysis using blood parameters at 1 week post‐partum, which grouped the population into the same two groups as the cluster analysis based on three variables: inorganic phosphorus, calcium, and either phospholipids or total cholesterol. We further showed that these discriminant functions could be used to predict the risk of periparturient disease even before parturition. Our results indicate that cluster analysis with multiple blood constituents is useful for predicting periparturient disease risks. 相似文献

We evaluated the anti-tumor effect of adenoviral vector-mediated p53 gene therapy on the growth of canine osteosarcoma xenografts formed in nude mice. Nude mice were subcutaneously transplanted with cells of 2 P53 mutant canine osteosarcoma cell lines, POS and CHOS. The osteosarcoma xenografts were injected with either an adenoviral vector that expresses canine wild-type P53 (AxCA-cp53) or LacZ (AxCA-LacZ). Tumor growth was significantly inhibited in the xenografts injected with AxCA-cp53 in comparison to those injected with AxCA-LacZ or PBS during the observation period of 27 days. An increase of the amount of p21(WAF1/CDKN1A) mRNA, and the number of apoptotic cells was shown in the tumors injected with AxCA-cp53 in comparison to those injected with AxCA-LacZ or PBS. The present study revealed that the adenoviral vector-mediated p53 gene transfer had an anti-tumor effect in canine osteosarcoma xenografts formed in nude mice. 相似文献
