Ensemble neuronal activity was recorded in each layer of the whisker area of the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) while rats performed a whisker-dependent tactile discrimination task. Comparison of this activity with SI activity evoked by similar passive whisker stimulation revealed fundamental differences in tactile signal processing during active and passive stimulation. Moreover, significant layer-specific functional differences in SI activity were observed during active discrimination. These differences could not be explained solely by variations in ascending thalamocortical input to SI. Instead, these results suggest that top-down influences during active discrimination may alter the overall functional nature of SI as well as layer-specific mechanisms of tactile processing.  相似文献

This study proposes a new method for detecting curved and straight crop rows in images captured in maize fields during the initial growth stages of crop and weed plants. The images were obtained under perspective projection with a camera installed onboard and conveniently arranged at the front of a tractor. The final goal was the identification of the crop rows which are crucial for precise autonomous guidance and site-specific treatments, including weed removal based on the identification of plants outside the crop rows. Image quality is affected by uncontrolled lighting conditions in outdoor agricultural environments and by gaps in the crop rows (due to lack of germination or defects during planting). Also, different plants heights and volumes occur due to different growth stages affecting the crop row detection process. The proposed method was designed with the required robustness to cope with the above undesirable situations and it consists of three sequentially linked phases: (i) image segmentation, (ii) identification of starting points and (iii) crop row detection. The main contribution is the ability of the method to detect curved crop rows as well as straights rows even with irregular inter-row spaces. The method performance has been tested in terms of accuracy and time processing.  相似文献

International agricultural development as practiced by U. S. sponsored research groups in developing countries has emphasized technical questions of production, ignoring more fundamental social and economic issues that underline rural poverty and hunger. Rethinking the role of U. S. development assistance will require transcending the view that the only way to impact agriculture in the Third World is by increasing the intensity of land use in high potential agricultural areas. The challenge is to find ways of how to further increase agricultural productivity so that the rural poor significantly benefit, while at the same time conserving and regenerating the resource base. U. S. scientists must realize that this is only possible by improving the access of resource-poor farmers to land, water, other natural resources, as well as to equitable credit, markets, appropriate technologies, etc. Solidarious collaboration will emerge from the U. S. siding with progressive governments and/or community-based initiatives that promote political change aimed at securing farmers' control over resources and inputs, and changing the structural conditions and policies that perpetuate poverty. A seeded growth method for the fabrication of high-permeance, high-separation-factor zeolite (siliceous ZSM-5, [Si96O192]-MFI) membranes is reported. The method consists of growing the crystals of an oriented seed layer to a well-intergrown film by avoiding events that lead to a loss of preferred orientation, such as twin overgrowths and random nucleation. Organic polycations are used as zeolite crystal shape modifiers to enhance relative growth rates along the desirable out-of-plane direction. The polycrystalline films are thin (approximately 1 micrometer) with single grains extending along the film thickness and with large in-plane grain size (approximately 1 micrometer). The preferred orientation is such that straight channels with an open diameter of approximately 5.5 angstroms run down the membrane thickness. Comparison with previously reported membranes shows that these microstructurally optimized films have superior performance for the separation of organic mixtures with components that have small differences in size and shape, such as xylene isomers.  相似文献

The disrupted in schizophrenia 1 (DISC1) gene is a candidate susceptibility factor for schizophrenia, but its mechanistic role in the disorder is unknown. Here we report that the gene encoding phosphodiesterase 4B (PDE4B) is disrupted by a balanced translocation in a subject diagnosed with schizophrenia and a relative with chronic psychiatric illness. The PDEs inactivate adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP), a second messenger implicated in learning, memory, and mood. We show that DISC1 interacts with the UCR2 domain of PDE4B and that elevation of cellular cAMP leads to dissociation of PDE4B from DISC1 and an increase in PDE4B activity. We propose a mechanistic model whereby DISC1 sequesters PDE4B in resting cells and releases it in an activated state in response to elevated cAMP.  相似文献

The main environmental factor that affects the regulation of reproductive seasonality is photoperiod through its effects on melatonin secretion. The melatonin receptor MTRN1A appears to be involved in regulating the reproductive seasonality and milk production in the period. The aim of this study was to identify polymorphisms in the MTRN1A gene and their possible associations with milk, fat and protein productions, fat and protein percentages, age at first calving, and first calving interval in buffaloes. Three genotypes (CC, CT, and TT) were identified by PCR-RFLP, and there was a significant association with protein percentage (P?<?0.0001). Further studies are necessary to better understand the influence of melatonin gene and their receptors in the productive functions of buffaloes.  相似文献
