Recent growth changes (1980–2007) in Western European forests strongly vary across tree species, and range from +42% in mountain contexts to ?17% in Mediterranean contexts. A primary aim of this paper was to estimate recent growth changes in eight major European tree species, in natural contexts ranging from mountain to Mediterranean. A second aim was to explore their association with species’ climatic habitat and contemporary climate change.Methods
Using >315,000 tree increments measured in >25,000 NFI plots, temporal changes in stand basal area increment (BAI) were modelled. Indicators of climate normals and of recent climatic change were correlated to species BAI changes.Results
BAI changes spanned from ?17 to +42% over 1980–2007 across species. BAI strongly increased for mountain species, showed moderate/no increase for generalist and temperate lowland species and declined for Mediterranean species. BAI changes were greater in colder/wetter contexts than in warmer/drier ones where declines were observed. This suggested a role for climate warming, further found more intense in colder contexts and strongly correlated with species BAI changes.Conclusion
The predominant role of climate warming and species climatic habitat in recent growth changes is highlighted in Western Europe. Concern is raised for Mediterranean species, showing growth decreases in a warmer climate with stable precipitation.52.

Light competition by trees is often regarded as a major limiting factor for crops in alley-cropping agroforestry. Northern latitude farmers are usually reluctant to adopt agroforestry as they fear that light competition will be fiercer in their conditions. We questioned the light availability for crops in alley-cropping at different latitudes from the tropic circle to the polar circle with a process-based 3D model of alley-cropping agroforestry. Two tree densities and two tree line orientations were considered. The effect of the latitude was evaluated with same-sized trees. The relative irradiance of the crops was computed for the whole year or at specific times of the year when crops need more light. The heterogeneity of crop irradiance across the alley was also computed. Surprisingly, crop relative irradiance of summer crops at high latitudes is high, at odds with farmers’ fears. Best designs were highlighted for improving the crop irradiance: North–South tree lines are recommended at high latitudes and East–West tree lines at low latitudes. At medium latitudes, North–South tree lines should be preferred to achieve an homogeneous irradiance of the crop in the alley. If we assume that trees at northern latitudes grow slower when compared to southern latitudes, then alley-cropping agroforestry is highly advisable even at high latitudes with summer crops. 相似文献

Effects of three forage harvesting regimes-total removal of foliage and branches once (T-12) or twice a year (T-6) and 50% removal every 2 months (P-2)-on growth and biological dinitrogen fixation of Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Walp were studied under subhumid tropical conditions in Guadeloupe, French Antilles. Gliricidia sepium was grown in association with the perennial C(4) grass Dichantium aristatum (Poir) C.E. Hubbard in a two-storied fodder production system. The medium-term effects of pruning on N(2) fixation were assessed by the (15)N natural abundance method. Gmelina arborea Roxb. was used as the non-fixing reference. The trees in the T-12 regime followed the natural phenological cycle, and flowering and podfilling at the beginning of the dry season reduced both foliage and nodule biomass. The T-6 regime impeded flowering, and only a few flowers, on older branches, were produced in the P-2 regime. In trees in the T-12, T-6, and P-2 regimes, fixed N comprised 54-87, 54-92, and 60-87%, respectively, of the total N in aboveground biomass, depending on sampling date. Total annual accumulation of N in harvestable aboveground biomass was highest in trees in the T-6 regime at 313 kg ha(-1), of which 204 kg ha(-1) of N was fixed from the atmosphere. In all treatments, about 70% of the N exported per year from the plot in the fodder harvest came from N(2) fixation. Thus, N(2) fixation makes an important contribution to the N economy of the G. sepium-D. aristatum forage production system, and greatly reduces the need for fertilizer application. 相似文献

Background
Fertilization with organic waste compost can close the nutrient cycles between urban and rural environments. However, its effect on yield and soil fertility must be investigated.Aim
This study investigated the long-term effect of compost on soil nutrient and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) concentration, nutrient budgets, and nitrogen (N) mineralization and efficiency.Methods
After 21 years of annual compost application (100/400 kg N ha–1 year–1 [100BC/400BC]) alone and combined with mineral fertilization, soil was analyzed for pH, organic carbon (SOC), nutrient (total N and P, Nmin, extractable CAL-P, CAL-K, and Mg), and PTE (Cu, Ni, Zn) concentrations. Yields were recorded and nutrient/PTE budgets and apparent net mineralization (ANM, only 2019) were calculated.Results
N efficiency was the highest in maize and for mineral fertilization. Compost application led to lower N efficiencies, but increased ANM, SOC, pH, and soil N, and surpluses of N, P, and all PTEs. Higher PTE concentrations were only found in 400BC for Cu. Nutrient budgets correlated with soil nutrient concentration. A surplus of 16.1 kg P ha–1 year–1 and 19.5 kg K ha–1 year–1 resulted in 1 mg kg–1 increase in CAL-P and CAL-K over 21 years.Conclusion
Compost application supplies nutrients to crops with a minor risk of soil-accumulation of PTEs. However, the nutrient stoichiometry provided by compost does not match crop offtakes causing imbalances. Synchronization of compost N mineralization and plant N demand does not match and limits the yield effect. In winter wheat only 65–70% of N mineralization occurred during the growth period. 相似文献55.

Bayesian methods seem well adapted to dynamic system models in general and to crop models in particular, because there is
in general prior information about parameter values. The usefulness of a Bayesian approach has often been pointed out, but
actual applications are rather rare. A major difficulty is including the elements of the covariance matrix of model errors
in the treatment. We treat the specific case of balanced data and an unstructured covariance matrix. In our particular case
this is a 3 × 3 matrix. We illustrate two methods for deriving a sample from the joint posterior density for the crop model
parameters and the error covariance matrix parameters. The first method is based on importance sampling, the second on Metropolis
within Gibbs sampling. We derive an instrumental density for the former and a proposal density for the latter which are adapted
to this type of model and data. Both algorithms work well and they give very similar results. The example concerns a model

Maize (Zea mays L.), soybean (Glycine max L.), and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) plants were grown in a controlled environment and exposed for 6 hr daily for 7 days to O3 at 0.15 μL L?1 and/or SO2 at 0.30 μL L?1 (daily exposures). Some plants exposed daily to O3 were also exposed to SO2 for 6 hr on the first, third, fifth, or seventh day of O3 exposure (variable exposures) and some plants exposed daily to SO2 were treated similarly with O3 to determine the growth effects of O3 or S02 pre- and/or post-treatments on S02 and O3 mixture response. Growth sensitivity to 6 hr S02 or 6 hr O3 treatments was generally affected by the previous history of O3 or SO2 exposure, respectively. Species differed in the number of days of O3 or SO2 treatments required to elicit maximum sensitivity to a single 6 hr O3 and SO2 treatment. Linear contrasts compared variable with daily exposures for the S02 and O3 regimes. Plants exposed to the gas mixture for a single day (variable exposures) tended to be smaller than those exposed to the gas mixture daily, with the exception of soybean exposed to SO2 during daily O3. The six treatments were carried out in eight exposure chambers, as a partially balanced incomplete block design in blocks of four due to separate environmental control of the exposure facilities. The partially balanced incomplete block design proved to be about 2.6 times as efficient as a complete block design. The inclusion of covariates further increased precision. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Renewed focus on public health has brought about considerable interest in workforce development among public health nutrition professionals in Canada. The present article describes a situational assessment of public health nutrition practice in Canada that will be used to guide future workforce development efforts. METHODS: A situational assessment is a planning approach that considers strengths and opportunities as well as needs and challenges, and emphasizes stakeholder participation. This situational assessment consisted of four components: a systematic review of literature on public health nutrition workforce issues; key informant interviews; a PEEST (political, economic, environmental, social, technological) factor analysis; and a consensus meeting. FINDINGS:Information gathered from these sources identified key nutrition and health concerns of the population; the need to define public health nutrition practice, roles and functions; demand for increased training, education and leadership opportunities; inconsistent qualification requirements across the country; and the desire for a common vision among practitioners. CONCLUSIONS: Findings of the situational assessment were used to create a three-year public health nutrition workforce development strategy. Specific objectives of the strategy are to define public health nutrition practice in Canada, develop competencies, collaborate with other disciplines, and begin to establish a new professional group or leadership structure to promote and enhance public health nutrition practice. The process of conducting the situational assessment not only provided valuable information for planning purposes, but also served as an effective mechanism for engaging stakeholders and building consensus. 相似文献

Summary Rhizomania is a disease of sugar beet caused by the furovirus beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV). Coat protein mediated resistance has been reported for a number of viral diseases. This approach to virus resistance was therefore attempted for control of rhizomania. Two constructs of the coat protein gene of BNYVV were introduced into sugar beet by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The mRNA level was estimated to be 0.01% of the poly A+ RNA. Expression of the coat protein gene was under the detection limit of our western blotting protocol i.e. below 0.01 g/50 g (0.02% of the total soluble protein). One transformation event per construct was tested in a greenhouse assay and in rhizomania infested soil in a field trial. In the greenhouse assay, transgenic plants showed a strong reduction of virus multiplication when compared to non-transgenic plants. This result was confirmed in the field trial, where a significant difference in virus multiplication was shown between plants with and without the coat protein gene. 相似文献

The influence of the network structure of wheat gluten on the barrier properties against enzymes was investigated in vitro. The changes in the network structure were introduced by different temperature treatments. The modifications were assessed with solubility studies of wheat gluten proteins in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The physical barrier properties of wheat gluten membranes were investigated with transport studies examining the transfer of a model protein with no enzymatic activity (BSA) through gluten membranes. The protein network was an effective barrier for BSA, although lightly cross‐linked films were mechanically instable. Membrane breaks occurred in function of the cross‐linking density (percentage of SDS‐insoluble proteins) after only 24 hr for lightly cross‐linked films (≈30% SDS‐insoluble proteins), while highly cross‐linked membranes (≈80% SDS‐insoluble protein) were tight up to more than 33 days. The digestion experiments of the gluten films with pepsin showed that the hydrolysis of wheat gluten films with >72% of SDS‐insoluble protein was significantly retarded. In conclusion, technological treatments to increase the cross‐linking density of gluten have the potential to slow the digestion of cereal‐based foodstuff and to reduce the degradation rate of composite biomaterials. 相似文献
