There is a pressing need to understand the consequences of human activities, such as land transformations, on watershed ecosystem
services. This is a challenging task because different indicators of water quality and yield are expected to vary in their
responsiveness to large versus local-scale heterogeneity in land use and land cover (LUC). Here we rely on water quality data
collected between 1977 and 2000 from dozens of gauge stations in Puerto Rico together with precipitation data and land cover
maps to (1) quantify impacts of spatial heterogeneity in LUC on several water quality indicators; (2) determine the spatial
scale at which this heterogeneity influences water quality; and (3) examine how antecedent precipitation modulates these impacts.
Our models explained 30–58% of observed variance in water quality metrics. Temporal variation in antecedent precipitation
and changes in LUC between measurements periods rather than spatial variation in LUC accounted for the majority of variation
in water quality. Urbanization and pasture development generally degraded water quality while agriculture and secondary forest
re-growth had mixed impacts. The spatial scale over which LUC influenced water quality differed across indicators. Turbidity
and dissolved oxygen (DO) responded to LUC in large-scale watersheds, in-stream nitrogen concentrations to LUC in riparian
buffers of large watersheds, and fecal matter content and in-stream phosphorus concentration to LUC at the sub-watershed scale.
Stream discharge modulated impacts of LUC on water quality for most of the metrics. Our findings highlight the importance
of considering multiple spatial scales for understanding the impacts of human activities on watershed ecosystem services. 相似文献

Attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), followed by multivariate treatment of the spectral data, was used to classify seed oils of the genus Cucurbita (pumpkins) according to their species as C. maxima, C. pepo, and C. moschata. Also, C. moschata seed oils were classified according to their genetic variety as RG, Inivit C-88, and Inivit C-2000. Up to 23 wavelength regions were selected on the spectra, each region corresponding to a peak or shoulder. The normalized absorbance peak areas within these regions were used as predictors. Using linear discriminant analysis (LDA), an excellent resolution among all categories concerning both Cucurbita species and C. moschata varieties was achieved. The proposed method was straightforward and quick and can be easily implemented. Quality control of pumpkin seed oils is important because Cucurbita species and genetic variety are both related to the pharmaceutical properties of the oils. 相似文献

In this study, antioxidant activities in free-radical-mediated oxidative systems and the genotoxic/antigenotoxic effects of two proteins with molecular mass around 17 kDa, purified from Solanum betaceum fruits (cyphomine) and Solanum tuberosum tubers (solamarine), were investigated. Both proteins inhibited uric acid formation with IC(50) values between 55 and 60 μg/mL, and both proteins were able to reduce oxidative damage by scavenging hydroxyl radicals and superoxide anion in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, the DPPH? reduction assay showed SC(50) values of 55-73 μg/mL. Cyphomine and solamarine were able to retain their antioxidant activity after heat treatment at 80 °C for 15 min. Allium cepa and Salmonella /microsome assays showed no genotoxic and mutagenic effects. Solamarine showed an antimutagenic effect against a direct mutagen (4-nitro-o-phenylenediamine). Consequently, the present study showed that the investigated proteins are promising ingredients for the development of functional foods with a beneficial impact on human health and an important source for the production of bioactive peptides. 相似文献

Forest declines are usually complex multifactorial phenomena that involve interactions between different factors. The possible interaction between different types of mycelial pathogens was investigated through artificial inoculation of oak seedlings, involving two root rot basidiomycetes, Collybia fusipes and Armillaria mellea, and two Phytophthora species, P. cinnamomi and P. cambivora. These pathogens were inoculated onto young Quercus robur saplings in greenhouse conditions, either alone or combining a root rot basidiomycete with a Phytophthora species. Three out of the four Phytophthora spp.*root rot basidiomycete combinations tested resulted in significantly greater damage to the oak host than the sum of the damages induced by the individual pathogens. In late 2003, a new disease appeared in protected bean crops in southeastern Spain, causing a decrease of over 50% in production.
Several samples of affected plants were collected and analyzed and the agent of this disease was identified as the bacterium
Erwinia aphidicola, which had never been described as a pathogen previously. We attempted to determine the possible bacterium transmission through
seeds, using 120 commercial bean seeds from the same batch as that used in an affected farm, and 120 seeds from the fruiting
plants of the same farm. Seed coats, cotyledons and leaves of plants originating from them, were taken and analyzed. Several
of the developed symptoms on plants from commercial and fruiting plant seeds were internervial chlorosis, necrotic pits and
rough roots and they coincided with those observed on affected crops. Bacteria present in commercial seed cotyledons were
isolated and analyzed by biochemical and molecular tests. Results confirmed the presence of Erwinia aphidicola in four analyzed seeds; moreover, Bacillus simplex/Bacillus muralis, Pseudomonas mendocina, Pseudomonas putida and Paenibacillus polymyxa were also identified. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) and Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) are among the most serious pests of sweet peppers in greenhouses. Chemical control is difficult because of their high reproductive rates and insecticide resistance, and seasonal inoculative releases of Orius laevigatus (Fieber) and Amblyseius swirskii (Athias‐Henriot) are commonly used to reduce their populations. As chemical treatments are often needed in the crop against other pests, the side effects of methoxyfenozide (an insect growth regulator against lepidopteran pests) and flonicamid (a selective feeding inhibitor against sucking insects) were studied in both beneficial organisms in a commercial greenhouse. RESULTS: Orius laevigatus and A. swirskii were released at commercial rates (4–5 and 100 m?2), and a strong establishment and a very homogeneous distribution were reached. One pesticide treatment with the maximum field recommended concentration of methoxyfenozide and flonicamid (96 and 100 mg AI L?1) was done when they were well established, and their population levels were not affected either immediately or up to 30 days after treatment. CONCLUSION: The results are indicative of no impact of methoxyfenozide and flonicamid on the two natural enemies in the field, and both can be considered as potential alternatives to be included in IPM programmes in sweet pepper. The most widely used Iron (Fe) fertilizer in calcareous soils is the synthetic chelate Fe(o,o‐EDDHA). However, humic substances are occasionally combined with Fe chelates in drip irrigation systems in order to lower costs. We investigated the effect of various mixtures of Fe(o,o‐EDDHA) and a commercially available humic substance on Fe availability in a calcareous soil from Murcia, Spain (in vitro experiment) and on leaf Fe content and fruit‐quality attributes of Citrus macrophylla (field experiment). In the in vitro experiment, a calcareous soil was incubated for 15 d with solutions of sole Fe(o,o‐EDDHA) and humic substance and of a mixture of humic substance and Fe(o,o‐EDDHA) to determine the dynamics of available Fe. While the mixture did not significantly increase the available soil Fe, it did decrease the rate of Fe retention in the surface soil compared to sole Fe(o,o‐EDDHA). In the field experiment, the substitution in the application solution of 67% of Fe(o,o‐EDDHA) by commercial humic substance increased leaf P in lemon trees from 0.19% with sole Fe(o,o‐EDDHA) to 0.30% and leaf Fe from 94 mg kg–1 to 115 mg kg–1. Some quality parameters like vitamin C content and peel thickness were also improved with a partial substitution of Fe(o,o‐EDDHA) by humic substances. We conclude that a partial substitution of commercial Fe chelates by humic substance can improve crop Fe uptake and may thus be economically attractive. The underlying physiological mechanisms and ecological implications require further studies. 相似文献

Nutritional status affects the processes of flowering and fruiting of plants. This study was conducted to determine the effects of fertilizer application on flowering, fruiting, and leaf nutrient content of Vanilla planifolia (Jacks. ex Andr). Treatments consisted of the application of grade 10-20-20 nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) fertilizer to the substratum in annual doses of 20, 50, and 100 g/plant plus a monthly application of foliar fertilizer. Two more treatments were foliar fertilization and no fertilization (control). Treatments increased the number of inflorescences and flower buds per plant, as well as the number and weight of fruits per plant, and decreased the abortion of flowers and immature fruits. These effects depended on the type of fertilizer, the amount applied, and the time of evaluation. The best results were obtained with the 100 g/plant/year treatment with an annual production of 1.5 kg of fruits per plant in the second year. Unfertilized plants produced 0.55 kg/plant/year. Differences were also found in foliar content of N, P, K, and copper (Cu) between vegetative and reproductive branches. Application of fertilizer to the substratum appears to improve reproductive parameters of vanilla plants and the production of beans, while foliar fertilization alone was ineffective in increasing crop productivity. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was used to discriminate between wine vinegar (red or white) and alcohol vinegar. One orthogonal signal correction method (OSC) was applied on a set of 73 vinegar NIR spectra from both origins and artificial blends made in the laboratory in order to remove information unrelated to a specific chemical response (tartaric acid), which was selected due to its high discriminant ability to differentiate between wine vinegar and alcohol vinegar samples. These corrected NIR spectra, as well as raw NIR spectra and 14 physicochemical variables, were used to develop separate classification models using the potential functions method as a class-modeling technique. The aforementioned models were compared to evaluate the suitability of NIR spectroscopy as a rapid method for discriminating between vinegar origins. The transformation of vinegar NIR spectra by means of an orthogonal signal correction method prompted a notable improvement in the specificity of the constructed classification models. The classification model developed was then applied to artificial vinegar blends made in the laboratory to test its capacity to recognize adulterated vinegar samples. 相似文献
