The antioxidant properties of seven dessert spices (anise, cinnamon, ginger, licorice, mint, nutmeg, and vanilla) were compared with those of the common food antioxidants butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) (E-320), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) (E-321), and propyl gallate (E-310). The influence of irradiation process on antioxidant activity was also evaluated. Mint and cinnamon exhibited a higher percentage of inhibition of oxidation than the other spices analyzed and the food antioxidants, as tested by the lipid peroxidation assay (LOO*). Nutmeg, anise, and licorice showed the strongest protection in the deoxyribose assay (OH*). Vanilla exhibited the highest antioxidant activity in the peroxidase-based assay (H2O2). Nutmeg, propyl gallate, ginger, and licorice improved the stability of oils (sunflower, corn, and olive) and fats (butter and margarine) against oxidation (110 degrees C Rancimat). Cinnamon was a better superoxide radical scavenger than the other analyzed spices and additives. When the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) assay was used to provide a ranking order of antioxidant activity, the result in decreasing order of antioxidant capacity was cinnamon approximately equal to propyl gallate > mint > anise > BHA > licorice approximately equal to vanilla > ginger > nutmeg > BHT. Irradiated samples did not show significant differences (p < 0.05) in the antioxidant activity with respect to the non-irradiated samples (1, 3, 5, and 10 kGy) in the assays used.  相似文献

Degradation of harvested tubers due to water loss, sprouting, and disease can cause severe economic difficulties in the cultivation of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum). This study evaluated the storage losses of new varieties of potato and determined the sprouting dates of potatoes stored at different temperatures. Additionally, this study evaluated the influence of weather conditions during the vegetative growth period on the date of sprouting in storage. After storage at three different temperatures (3, 5, and 8 °C), we estimated natural losses and losses caused by sprouting or the development of disease. The potato varieties stored at 3 °C, and 5 °C had similar weight losses (8.8% and 9.3%, respectively), but the potatoes stored at 8 °C had higher losses (10.8%). The average potato losses caused by disease ranged from 0.6% to 10%. The onset of sprouting of potatoes stored at 8 °C depended on the variety and began in the 20 day of December. Storage at 5 °C delayed sprouting by about 50 days compared with storage at 8 °C. Weather conditions (hot and rainy) during vegetative growth of the plants also influenced sprouting date, natural losses, and the amount of disease during storage. Our data showed a significant correlation between the hydrothermal coefficient during the vegetative period and the date of sprouting of potatoes during storage.  相似文献

During a long‐term 3‐year dietary exposure of mature carp females to lead, its bioaccumulation in the brain, changes in the neurohormonal activity at the level of the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland as well as the growth and maturation of ovaries were analysed. Moreover, an analysis of the effectiveness of hormone‐stimulated spawning during two subsequent spawning seasons was carried out. The results of the analyses show that chronic exposure of maturing and mature carp females to lead in feed results in its accumulation in the brain (1.365 μg g?1). This impairs the endocrine activity of the hypothalamus, which is manifested by, among others, an increased secretion of dopamine and impaired spontaneous secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH). The observed decrease in the concentration of gonadotropin in blood inhibits vitellogenesis, which is manifested by a lower degree of the maturity of oocytes, lower fecundity (as measured by egg number, egg weight, egg maturity and egg survival) and lower gonadosomatic index values. The final negative impact of lead is the impairment of reproductive functions, as manifested by a smaller number of spawning females and in their lower fecundity during spawning.  相似文献

Reintroduction of native species has become increasingly important in conservation worldwide for recovery of rare species and restoration purposes. However, few studies have reported the outcome of reintroduction efforts in plant species. Using data from the literature combined with a questionnaire survey, this paper analyses 249 plant species reintroductions worldwide by assessing the methods used and the results obtained from these reintroduction experiments. The objectives were: (1) to examine how successful plant species reintroductions have been so far in establishing or significantly augmenting viable, self-sustaining populations in nature; (2) to determine the conditions under which we might expect plant species reintroductions to be most successful; (3) to make the results of this survey available for future plant reintroduction trials. Results indicate that survival, flowering and fruiting rates of reintroduced plants are generally quite low (on average 52%, 19% and 16%, respectively). Furthermore, our results show a success rate decline in individual experiments with time. Survival rates reported in the literature are also much higher (78% on average) than those mentioned by survey participants (33% on average). We identified various parameters that positively influence plant reintroduction outcomes, e.g., working in protected sites, using seedlings, increasing the number of reintroduced individuals, mixing material from diverse populations, using transplants from stable source populations, site preparation or management effort and knowledge of the genetic variation of the target species. This study also revealed shortcomings of common experimental designs that greatly limit the interpretation of plant reintroduction studies: (1) insufficient monitoring following reintroduction (usually ceasing after 4 years); (2) inadequate documentation, which is especially acute for reintroductions that are regarded as failures; (3) lack of understanding of the underlying reasons for decline in existing plant populations; (4) overly optimistic evaluation of success based on short-term results; and (5) poorly defined success criteria for reintroduction projects. We therefore conclude that the value of plant reintroductions as a conservation tool could be improved by: (1) an increased focus on species biology; (2) using a higher number of transplants (preferring seedlings rather than seeds); (3) taking better account of seed production and recruitment when assessing the success of reintroductions; (4) a consistent long-term monitoring after reintroduction.  相似文献

Purpose

Mercury speciation in sediments is linked to environmental conditions and processes. Domination of particular mercury species depends on its source, displays considerable seasonal behavior, and may be further modified due to oxygen levels, icing conditions, or the input of fresh organic matter. The purpose of this study was to examine the coastal area of the Gulf of Gdańsk in terms of mercury contamination and the influence of seasonal environmental changes on its speciation.

Materials and methods

In three highly dynamic coastal sites, mercury speciation in sediments was studied in relation to other environmental parameters (redox conditions, organic matter concentration, bacteria abundance, etc.). Sediment and water samples were collected monthly during a 3-year study. Sequential extraction of sediments was used for identification of four inorganic mercury species: dissolved, bound with fulvic and humic acids, mercury sulfide, and residual fraction. Cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CV-AFS) was used for extracts and liquid sample analysis. Total mercury in sediments was measured with atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Changes in salinity were analyzed by measurements of chloride and sulfate ion concentrations using ion chromatography. Bacteria number and biomass were measured by direct counting using epifluorescence microscopy.

Results and discussion

Seasonal changes in mercury speciation were observed at all sites and attributed to different processes. Labile mercury fraction contribution varied from 0 to 80%. The speciation patterns varied locally as the stations selected for the study are diversified in terms of anthropogenic impact, water dynamics, and output from land. Mercury concentrations at all stations fluctuated during phytoplankton blooms, icing of marine waters, precipitation, or increased surface runoff from the land. In this local scale, the global climate changes are visible already as environmental conditions in studied area changed in comparison to elder research.

Conclusions

Obtained results suggest that although mercury emissions to the environment have decreased in recent years, local weather conditions, which may be intensified by climate change, seriously affect the bioavailability of past mercury deposits in coastal sediments.

In spite of a lack of acute toxicity of single metal ions, in 96 hour laboratory tests there was a long term toxicity againstS. carpocapsae andH. bacteriophora nematodes. The 96 hour laboratory tests were carried out in order to prove possible synergistic and antagonistic interactions between pairs of metal ions. Thus, the pairs of ions were arranged from each of Al, Cd, Co(II), Cr(III), Cr(VI), Cu(II), Fe(III), Li, Mo(VI), Ni(II), Sc(IV), V(V) and Zn on one side and Mn(II) and Mg on the other. Mn(II) and Mg ions considerably reduced the nematode mortality and increased their infectivity againstGalleria mellonella caterpillars.  相似文献

Appropriate management of sewage sludge is an important worldwide issue due to the still growing amount of wastewaters. In the study we examined to what extent the addition of dairy sewage sludge compared with mineral fertilization affects porosity, repellency index, and hydraulic conductivity of variously sized aggregates from two soil depths of Eutric Cambisol derived from loess: 5–15 cm and 25–35 cm. The repellency index was calculated as a ratio of ethanol and water sorptivity. Data on water and ethanol sorptivities of initially air‐dry soil aggregate fractions were obtained from steady state flow measurements using an infiltration device. Hydraulic conductivity was determined by measuring water infiltration at five pressure heads: –8, –6, –4, –2, and 0 cm of water column with the same device as for sorptivity determination. Addition of sewage sludge to the soil decreased the soil repellency index by an average of 27% in topsoil and 32% in subsoil for both aggregate sizes, respectively, and increased hydraulic conductivity about four times in both layers. Smaller aggregates (15–20 mm diameter) from soil amended with sewage sludge, in comparison with larger ones (30–35 mm diameter), had a higher repellency index by 36 and 24% in topsoil and subsoil, respectively. As for aggregates from soil with mineral fertilization, those differences were smaller and equal to 15% in subsoil, in topsoil smaller aggregates even had slightly lower repellency index (by 5%). Aggregates taken from the upper soil layer were more water repellent and had smaller hydraulic conductivity than those taken from subsoil, regardless of soil treatment and aggregate size.  相似文献

Dairy cows were classified on the basis of a histological study after a hepatic biopsy conducted in the second week post partum (mild fatty liver, moderate fatty liver, severe fatty liver). Plasma lipoproteins were separated into various density classes by repeated ultracentrifugation. The results indicate that the beginning of lactation is associated with a low concentration of the 1.006 to 1.063 g ml-1 lipoprotein fraction. The lowest concentrations occurred in cows with severe steatosis or during the evolution of moderate steatosis.  相似文献

The effect of entomopathogenic nematodesSteinernema feltiae applied in dose 80 nematodes/cm2 of soil on non-insect pests: crustaceans and millipedes were assessed in greenhouse. No differences were got between number of plants damaged by these pests when nematodes were added to the soil 8 days after vegetables sowing. When the plants were sown after nematodes application number of seedlings damaged were two in case of millipedes, or three in case of crustaceans, times less than in the check withoutS. feltiae. About 50% and higher cumulative mortality of these pests was observed between 2–8 week after nematodes application. The nematodes multiplied well in the millipedes and crustaceans bodies.
Zusammenfassung Im Gewächshaus wurde die Wirkung einer Freilassung des entomopathogenen NematodenSteinernema feltiae (80 Indiv./cm2 Boden) auf Asseln und Tausendfüßer untersucht. Es ergab sich kein Unterschied hinsichtlich der Zahl geschädigter Pflanzen nach Zugabe der Nematoden 8 Tage nach Aussäen der Pflanzen. Wurden aber die Pflanzen nach dem Einbringen der Nematoden gesät, war der Schaden im Fall der Tausendfüßer 2 x, im Fall der Asseln 3 x geringer als in Kontrollparzellen ohne Nematoden. Die Mortalität dieser Schädlinge stieg 2–8 Wochen nach Einbringen der Nematoden auf 50% und mehr an. Die Nematoden vermehrten sich in den Krpern der Asseln und Tausendfüßer stark.
