Human rhodopsin in aqueous solution has lambda(max). of 493 mmicro and is lower in the spectrum than the rhodopsins of all other known vertebrates, with the exception of certain deep-sea fishes. Its molar extinction is 40,000 +/- 800. Like other rhodopsins, it bleaches to a mixture of opsin and all-trans retinene and is resynthesized by incubating opsin with neo-b (11-cis) retinene. The regenerated rhodopsin has the same lambda(max). as the extracted pigment; this is due, therefore, not to an unusual retinene but to a characteristic human opsin. The regeneration in solution from opsin and neo-b retinene is a second-order reaction with a half-time, at 29.5 degrees C, of about 2.5 minutes. This is much faster than the synthesis of rhodopsin in the living human eye, and faster than human rod dark-adaptation; the rate of both processes in vivo must be limited by reactions which precede the union of neo-b retinene with opsin, the final step in rhodopsin synthesis. In the rods, rhodopsin is virtually in the solid state-highly oriented in close relation with other highly oriented molecules. In this situation its spectrum is displaced toward the red (lambda(max) 500 mmicro) and is narrower than in solution. For light entering the rods axially, rhodopsin has also a considerably increased extinction, some 1.5 times higher than when randomly oriented. Eight experimental diets were formulated for rainbow trout using agricultural byproducts as major ingredients. Each experimental diet contained varying amounts of corn grain, corn gluten meal, corn gluten feed and one of the following: 200 g kg?1 peanut meal, 200 or 400 g kg?1 soybean meal (SBM), 390 g kg?1 low-allergen soy flour, 310 g kg?1 soy protein concentrate, 300 g kg?1 low-allergen soy protein concentrate or 200 g kg?1 SBM + 110 g kg?1 blood meal. One diet contained 200 g kg?1 SBM and canola oil as the main lipid source. The remaining diets contained 95 g kg?1 menhaden oil. Fish fed a commercial trout diet exhibited significantly greater weight gain (322%), and a lower feed conversion ratio (0.89) but significantly lower protein efficiency ratio (2.18) than fish fed the experimental diets. Within the experimental diets, fish fed the 400 g kg?1 soy flour diet and the 400 g kg?1 soybean meal diet had significantly higher weight gains (276% and 268%) and protein efficiency ratios (2.58 and 2.52), and lower feed conversion ratios (1.02 and 1.03) than fish fed other experimental diets. Fillet flavour varied between treatments. Most notable was the lower fishy flavour and higher chicken flavour of fish fed the diet that contained canola oil rather than menhaden oil. Microscopic evaluation of the liver and five sections of the gastrointestinal tract failed to demonstrate any differences between treatment groups. The ingredient costs of several experimental diets were lower than the estimated cost of a standard commercial trout diet. The daily mortality rates of North Sea herring early‐stage larvae are found to vary over decades. Larval abundance data were used with a spatio‐temporal oceanographic model to reconstruct temperature histories of the observed larvae. The histories were used in conjunction with a temperature‐based growth model to estimate larval age. Mean daily mortality rates were then estimated for the four spawning components (Downs, Banks, Buchan and Orkney/Shetland) using the vertical life table approach, which considers instantaneous abundances across all ages rather than following distinct cohorts. All spawning components, but especially Downs (in the south), exhibited a steady rise in mortality associated with increasing population size. In addition, the three northern components shared a distinct trend in mortality that was significantly correlated with ambient water temperatures experienced by the larvae during the respective time periods after hatching. This trend was also significantly negatively correlated with the residuals of the whole stock‐recruitment relationship. These findings were generally robust to assumptions about growth and hatch length of larvae. The compensatory increase in productivity in the late 1980s and poor recruitment since 2000 coincide with changes in the mortality of larvae younger than 30 days post hatch and covary with larval density and temperature. Thus we suggest that the mortality of early‐stage larvae does impact on the population dynamics in North Sea herring in its current productivity regime, implying a critical period in the determination of year class strength. 相似文献

1. British wetlands have a long history of over-exploitation, and there is evidence of a continuing decline. A significant body of obligations exists for the protection and wise use of British wetlands. However, there is an apparent failure of existing legislation and agreements adequately to protect the remaining resource. 2. Better coordination of wetland policy is required to avert a continuing piecemeal loss of the nation's wetland resource. A consultation exercise has revealed support, and opportunities, for closer collaboration between a wide range of organizations with responsibility for, or which otherwise affect, wetlands. There are many potential advantages to the development and acceptance of a single consistent definition and classification scheme, agreeable to all organizations with interests in wetlands. 3. To provide adequate protection for wetlands, it is essential that the wide-ranging socio-economic and ecological benefits they provide are accounted for in decision-making on all relevant development and land management issues, and are built into cost–benefit assessments and environmental statements prepared to support these decisions. 4. The development of a clear national wetland strategy, in fulfilment of the Ramsar Convention as ratified by the UK in 1976, is a key step towards the goal of protecting the nation's wetland resource. 5. The establishment of a National Wetland Forum, constituted by representatives from all wetland-related organizations and with support from Government, is of the highest priority if obligations to the wise and sustainable use of wetlands are to be met. Despite management practices to achieve sustainability, commercial landings for Florida spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) have experienced a drastic decline (57%) since 2000. This is cause for concern not only for economic reasons, but for issues of sustainability. An annual index of P. argus post‐larval (puerulus) abundance, estimated with a generalized linear model with significant mean sea‐level effects, shows a 36% decrease in annual puerulus supply since 1988. In addition, local Florida spawning stock biomass estimated from an age‐structured sequential population analysis decreased 57% since 1988. Puerulus abundance follows a highly correlated (R = 0.76) trend with a 12‐month delayed spawning stock abundance, which supports the contention that the Florida spawning population is a significant contributing factor to post‐larval recruitment in Florida. Residuals about the puerulus on spawning stock abundance function follow closely an interannual North Atlantic Oscillation Index signal. This residual effect is thought of as a secondary regional population effect on Florida puerulus recruitment. The Florida spiny lobster stock is exploited with no fishing mortality controls due to the Pan Caribbean recruitment concept adopted in Florida spiny lobster management. Therefore, the potential of recruitment overfishing exists if fishing mortality controls to protect local spawning stock abundance, such as catch quotas, are not introduced. 相似文献
