The benefits of adding composted organic materials to soils to enhance carbon storage could be countered by the mobilisation of some harmful pollutants commonly found in frequently degraded urban soils. Therefore non-composted materials could be a safer option. In the present study, carbon and trace element fluxes in soil pore water were studied in response to the surface mulch addition and the incorporation into an urban soil of greenwaste compost versus two non-composted amendments; a woody oversize material and biochar following inoculation with the vertical burrowing earthworm Lumbricus terrestris. The aim was to establish (i) to what extent the non-composted amendments impacted on mobility of soluble trace elements in the soil, compared to the composted amendment, and (ii) if/how this was regulated by earthworm activity.Both composted and non-composted amendments enhanced dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in soil pore water to ∼100-300 mg l−1 in the upper depth of the soil profile above which they were applied as a mulch and similarly within the mesocosms in which they were mixed. Dissolved organic carbon, dissolved nitrogen (DTN) and trace metals, especially Cu and Pb, where enhanced to the greatest extent by greenwaste compost, because of strong co-mobilisation of metals by DOC. Biochar enhanced As and Cu mobility in the field profile and, additionally Pb in the mesocosms, with no effect on Cd. The woody, oversize amendment neither greatly increased DOC nor As, Cu, Pb or Zn mobility although, unlike the other amendments, earthworms increased DOC and Cd mobility when soils were amended with this material.This study concludes that non-composted amendments had a lower impact on DOC and thus trace element co-mobility than the composted greenwaste in this urban soil, whilst the general influence of earthworms was to reduce DOC and hence associated trace element mobility. In wider environmental terms the addition of non-composted materials to some urban soils, versus composted greenwaste could reduce the risk of mobilising potentially harmful elements, whilst usefully improving soil quality. 相似文献

During a 5 year period from 1982 to 1986, the FDA Los Angeles District Laboratory analyzed 19,851 samples of domestic and imported food and feed commodities for pesticide residues. A single, rapid, multiresidue method was used. The resultant data have been compiled showing the commodities sampled and the identity and range of levels of pesticide residues detected, including an indication of those residue findings that did not comply with U.S. federal tolerance levels. The residue data presented should not be viewed as being representative of the U.S. food supply; rather, the results are indicative of a surveillance- and compliance-oriented sampling of various food shipments collected by the Los Angeles District. 相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are key components of ecosystems through their influence on plant communities and ecosystem processes. A major source of information regarding the importance of AMF species richness on process rates are mesocosm experiments using different levels of diversity of AMF as provided by single-species cultures of AMF. Since AMF inocula are generally made available in the form of non-sterile pot culture material, it is possible that AMF symbiosis-associated microbiota are at least partially responsible for some effects hitherto directly attributed to the AMF mycelium. Here, we provide evidence that microbiota associated with single-species cultures of AMF (after long-term pot culture enrichment of 7–8 years) can strongly affect the ecosystem process of soil aggregation. This effect occurred in an AMF isolate specific manner, but in the absence of live and active AMF mycelium. We additionally documented large differences in microbiota communities associated with the different AMF inocula (using PLFA analyses), suggesting that these differences were at least partly responsible for the observed changes in soil aggregation. This result points to AMF–microbiota interactions as a largely unexplored mechanism underlying soil aggregation (and potentially other ecosystem processes). We suggest that a reinterpretation of previous experiments using greenhouse-derived AMF cultures may be necessary, and the need to consider AMF symbiosis-associated microbiota in mechanistic studies of AMF and mycorrhizae in general is emphasized. 相似文献

Twenty male Holstein calves averaging 105 kg in weight and naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes and small numbers of lungworm and hookworm, were given experimental infections with the two latter species to provide adult and larval stages for anthelmintic evaluation. Following random allotment, one group of 10 calves was injected subcutaneously with moxidectin at a dosage of 0.2 mg kg-1 of body weight. A second group of 10 was injected subcutaneously with unmedicated blank vehicle at a dosage of 1 ml per 50 kg of body weight. Fecal samples were examined before treatment and at 7 and 13 days after treatment. The 20 calves were necropsied for worm recovery at 13 and 14 days after treatment. All calves were positive for lungworm and hookworm on the treatment date. Treatment was 100% effective in elimination of hookworm eggs and lungworm larvae and 99.9% in reducing total egg counts at both 7 and 13 days after treatment. Moxidectin was 100% effective (P less than 0.01) in eliminating the following 11 species of nematodes. Dictyocaulus viviparus mature and immature adults (E5), Bunostomum phlebotomum adults and L4, Ostertagia ostertagi adults and early L4, Ostertagia lyrata adult males, Haemonchus placei adults. Trichostrongylus axei adults, Cooperia spp., including Cooperia punctata, Cooperia spatulata, and Cooperia pectinata adults, Oesophagostomum radiatum adults and Trichuris discolor adults. Variability among and within seed sources of naturalized Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle in seed and height growth characteristics indicated that significant differences exist both at the seed source and between individual trees. Genetic variance was distributed in an approx. 1 : 2 ratio among seed sources and individual mother trees respectively. The survival times of 148 dogs treated for pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism were studied using clinical records from 3 UK veterinary centers between 1998 and 2003. Of these animals, 123 (83.1%) were treated with trilostane, while 25 (16.9%) were treated with mitotane. Treatment groups were compared using t-tests and analysis of variance (or their nonparametric equivalents) and chi-square tests. Survival data were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier survival plots and Cox proportional hazard methods. There was no significant difference between the population attributes from each center or between treatment groups. The median survival time for animals treated with trilostane was 662 days (range 8-1,971) and for mitotane it was 708 days (range 33-1,399). There were no significant differences between the survival times for animals treated with trilostane and those treated with mitotane. In the multivariable model (including drug, center, breed group, weight, diagnostic group, and age at diagnosis), only age at diagnosis and weight were significantly negatively associated with survival.
