To examine the efficacy of juvenile salmon research as a tool for forecasting adult returns, the results from a study on the
early marine life stage of juvenile chum salmon, conducted in the Nemuro Strait during 1999–2002 (i.e., 1998–2001 brood years),
were compared with the return rates of adult salmon. Among the four brood years, the 2000 brood year (i.e., salmon migrating
to the sea in 2001) was previously reported as showing higher abundance, higher growth rate and better somatic condition during
the coastal residency period. Consequently, we expected it to have the highest return rate, under a hypothesis that juvenile
survival in coastal residency regulates brood-year strength. Contrary to this expectation, the 2000 brood year had almost
the lowest return rate. Alternatively, a statistical model in which sea surface temperature during the first year of marine
life and size at release were utilized as explanatory variables reconstructed the actual variability in return rates more
accurately than that based on the early marine life stage. Possible reasons for the discrepancy between the results of the
juvenile salmon research and adult returns are discussed, and we suggest improvements for future research on juvenile salmon. 相似文献

In order to accurately assess the carcinogenicity of chemicals with regard to rare
tumors such as rat CNS tumors, sufficient information about spontaneous tumors are very
important. This paper presents the data on the type, incidence and detected age of CNS
tumors in F344/DuCrlCrlj (a total of 1363 males and 1363 females) and Crl:CD(SD) rats (a
total of 1650 males and 1705 females) collected from in-house background data-collection
studies and control groups of carcinogenicity studies at our laboratory, together with
those previously reported in F344 and SD rats. The present data on F344/DuCrlCrlj rats
(F344 rats) and Crl:CD(SD) rats (SD rats) clarified the following. (1) The incidences of
all CNS tumors observed in F344 rats were less than 1%. (2) The incidences of malignant
astrocytoma and granular cell tumor were higher in male SD rats than in female SD rats.
(3) The incidences of astrocytoma and granular cell tumor were higher in SD rats than in
F344 rats. (4) Among astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma and granular cell tumor,
oligodendroglioma was detected at the youngest age, followed by astrocytoma, and
ultimately, granular cell tumor developed in both strains. The incidences observed in our
study were almost consistent with those previously reported in F344 and SD rats. 相似文献

To investigate the population dynamics of naturally recruited wild Japanese eels, fisheries data of wild individuals in Okayama Prefecture were investigated as a case study. Wild and stocked eels were discriminated using a recently developed method based on otolith stable isotopes. Of the 161 eels captured in freshwater areas where eels had been stocked, 98.1% were discriminated as stocked. In contrast, 82.8% of 128 eels captured in coastal areas where eels are not stocked were discriminated as wild. There was a significant decrease in longline and set-net catch per unit effort between 2003 and 2016 in the coastal areas where most eels were discriminated as wild, indicating ongoing depletion of wild Japanese eels in these waters. 相似文献

An 8-year-old, spayed, female Shiba dog was presented to a referring veterinarian with a
complaint of chronic diarrhea and anorexia. Ultrasound and radiographs revealed an
irregular mass in the pelvic cavity. The mass and the affected section of colon were
surgically removed. Histopathological examination revealed multifocal coalescing
granulomas and effaced intestinal structures. Central necrotic debris surrounded by
multinucleated giant cells, lymphocytes, plasma cells and neutrophils was observed.
Numerous, irregularly branched hyphae with pale basophilic, thin walls and occasional
bulbous enlargements at the tips were present. Polymerase chain reaction identified
Basidiobolus ranarum, successfully confirming a definitive diagnosis of
basidiobolomycosis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of intestinal

Bergeyella zoohelcum causes rare but severe human clinical diseases, which mostly arise from animal bites. Notably, Bergeyella infections can also occur in older people after prolonged exposure to dogs or cats without biting. We detected B. zoohelcum in oral cavities of therapy dogs in close contact with older people residing in nursing homes. Twenty‐two bacterial isolates were identified as B. zoohelcum by using matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF MS) and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Our results showed that MALDI‐TOF MS is an effective tool for rapid identification of rarely isolated, difficult‐to‐identify microorganisms, such as B. zoohelcum, derived from not only human clinical samples but also animal samples. To our knowledge, this is the first report on detection of B. zoohelcum from therapy dogs. We have provided information on dog‐assisted therapy to improve the relationship between humans and animals in ageing societies, particularly for preventive healthcare of older people living in nursing care facilities. 相似文献

Greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) is an important fishery resource with a circumglobal distribution from tropical to temperate waters. Here, we investigated the spawning migration and habitat utilization of S. dumerili in the East China Sea (ECS). Archival tags were attached to 22 adult fish to examine their horizontal and vertical movements and estimate the spawning ground. S. dumerili were captured and released in the coastal waters of eastern Taiwan on November of 2016 and 2017. Information from seven pop-up satellite archival tags and seven depth–temperature recorders was recovered. Almost all of the fish stayed in the Taiwanese exclusive economic zone. Most individuals moved from released site to the southern edge of the ECS and showed behavior associated with the topographic features in winter (November to December). These phenomena may be related to foraging and be driven by oceanographic features such as the seasonal monsoon and the Kuroshio. The fish then migrated to the south offshore area of Taiwan in January and February. During their southward migration, the fish experienced a slowly elevated water temperature regime (SETR), which is one of the environmental factors that induce final oocyte maturation. In the spawning season (February to April), tagged females exhibited continuous diel vertical movements (DVMs) after experiencing the SETR. These continuous DVMs were observed over a wide geographic range from north to south in the Kuroshio off eastern Taiwan. Many bony fish type I collagens have a characteristic third chain designated as α3(I). However, much less is known about the primary structure and distinction of the proα(I) chains. Their cDNAs were cloned by RT-PCR from the muscle tissue of Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica. Three cDNAs coding for the triple-helical domain of fibrillar collagen were identified as proα1(I), proα2(I) and proα3(I) chains by sequencing selected tryptic peptides isolated from eel type I collagen subunit chains, α1(I), α2(I) and α3(I). Eel proα3(I) had high amino acid sequence identity (81 %) to its proα1(I). The distribution of seven Cys residues in the C-propeptide of proα3(I) was identical to that of proα1(I). There was a third Cys residue at the 1,268th position from the N-terminus in proα1(I), though a supposed Cys residue at the 1,264th position in proα3(I) was replaced by a Ser residue. Similar replacement has been observed in the proα3(I) chains of trout and zebrafish. These combined results suggest that replacement of the Cys residue allows for the identification of fish collagen proα(I) previously not identified as proα3(I). 相似文献

Recent studies have emphasized the crucial role of gut microbiota in triggering and modulating immune response. We aimed to determine whether the modification of gut microbiota by oral co‐administration of two antibiotics, ampicillin and neomycin, would lead to changes in the antibody response to antigens in chickens. Neonatal chickens were given or not given ampicillin and neomycin (0.25 and 0.5 g/L, respectively) in drinking water. At 2 weeks of age, the chicks were muscularly or orally immunized with antigenic keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH), and then serum anti‐KLH antibody levels were examined by ELISA. In orally immunized chicks, oral antibiotics treatment enhanced antibody responses (IgM, IgA, IgY) by 2–3‐fold compared with the antibiotics‐free control, while the antibiotics did not enhance antibody responses in the muscularly immunized chicks. Concomitant with their enhancement of antibody responses, the oral antibiotics also lowered the Lactobacillus species in feces. Low doses of antibiotics (10‐fold and 100‐fold lower than the initial trial), which failed to change the fecal Lactobacillus population, did not modify any antibody responses when chicks were orally immunized with KLH. In conclusion, oral antibiotics treatment enhanced the antibody response to orally exposed antigens in chickens. This enhancement of antibody response was associated with a modification of the fecal Lactobacillus content, suggesting a possible link between gut microbiota and antibody response in chickens. 相似文献
