A field trial was carried out with Nobi-Vac AR vaccine in 11 swine breeding herds. One herd suffered from severe B. bronchiseptica (BB+) rhinitis in piglets, while no clinical Atrophic Rhinitis (AR) was observed. Ten herds were described as AR problem herds, because clinical AR was observed for at least 1 year in spite of the fact that medication of sows and piglets was carried out and adequate housing and management systems were available in most herds. BB+ was isolated in 9 of these 10 farms and the AR pathogenic P. multocida (PM+) in all these farms. The trial started when piglets were born of sows which had been vaccinated 3 times. All piglets between 7 and 10 weeks old were examined clinically for AR. Nasal swabs from 20 pigs on each farm were screened bacteriologically for BB+ and PM+ every other month. A severe reoccurrence of AR was found in 2 of the 10 AR problem farms. In these 2 herds the 'all in-all out' system was not applied in farrowing and weaning houses. In the 8 other AR problem herds the percentage of pigs with AR decreased significantly below the average level of 1% per year. The percentage of pigs infected with BB+ and PM+ also decreased significantly. PM+ was significantly related to the percentage of clinical AR piglets. Seasonal effects contributed to a minor extent to the percentage of AR piglets. After 2.5 years of this trial PM+ could not be isolated during the last 12 months in six of the remaining AR problems herds. The conclusion is that Nobi-Vac AR vaccination of the sow gave protection against clinical AR in piglets on those farms (80%) which provided adequate housing and management systems. 相似文献

In contrast with the recommended dose of 2,000 ppm sulphadimidine sodium in the drinking water for treatment of broilers against colibacillosis, it appeared that under experimental conditions, treatment at 500 ppm (60 mg/kg body weight) gave the best therapeutic effects. This paper describes a methodology to quantify the transmission of Actinobacillus (A.) pleuropneumoniae from subclinically infected carrier pigs to susceptible contact pigs, and to test the effect of possible interventions on the transmission. The methodology includes the design of a transmission experiment, and a method with which A. pleuropneumoniae transmission can be quantified and with which the effect of an intervention on the transmission can be tested. The experimental design consists of two parts. First, subclinically infected carrier pigs are created by contact exposure of specific-pathogen-free pigs to endobronchially inoculated pigs. Second, transmission is observed from the group of carrier pigs to a second group of susceptible contact pigs after replacing the inoculated pigs by new contact pigs. The presented analytical method is a generalised linear model (GLM) with which the effect of an intervention on the susceptibility and infectivity can be tested separately, if the transmission is observed in heterogeneous populations. The concept of the experimental transmission model is illustrated by describing an A. pleuropneumoniae transmission experiment in which the effect of vaccination on the susceptibility is quantified. Although it could not be demonstrated that vaccination has an effect on the susceptibility of pigs, it was demonstrated that nasal excretion of A. pleuropneumoniae is related to the infectivity of pigs. 相似文献

Pigs with wasting syndrome were examined for macroscopic and histopathological lesions, and for porcine circovirus (PCV). Histopathological lesions were comparable to those previously documented for post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). In addition, in seven out of ten examined PMWS-affected pigs focal-to-slight mononuclear meningitis and focal cerebral mononuclear infiltrates (4 out of 10) were observed. A virus was isolated from organs and sera from pigs showing wasting syndrome. An immunoperoxidase monolayer assay and an indirect immunofluorescence assay were performed on the infected PK-15 and Dulac cell cultures, respectively, and both assays indicated the presence of PCV type 2 (PCV2). The nested-polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) technique, based on the use of PCV2 specific oligonucleotides, revealed specific amplified products of 481 bp. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the entire genome of the Dutch PCV isolate 24657 NL showed a homology with known nucleotide sequences of porcine PCV type 1 (PCV1) and PCV2 isolates of 77.1% and >96%, respectively. Pharmacokinetic studies in broilers and layers of different sulphonamides indicate a good absorption and a long elimination half-life (of sulphaquinoxaline, sulphadimidine and to a lesser degree sulphadiazine) resulting in high plasma concentrations during drinking water medication in the recommended therapeutic doses. In contrast drinking water medication with high concentrations of trimethoprim (up to 1,320 mg/liter) resulted in a maximal mean plasma concentration of 1.2 micrograms/ml. Very good therapeutic effects were demonstrated in broilers experimentally infected with a sulphonamide-susceptible E. coli strain when treated with sulphaquinoxaline (200 mg/liter), sulphadimidine sodium (2 gram/liter), sulphachloropyridazine 30 per cent (1 gram/liter) and to a lesser degree sulphadiazine sodium (250 mg/liter). Synergism was demonstrated between trimethoprim and sulphadiazine (1:5). The combination of trimethoprim with sulphaquinoxaline (1:3) did not induce better therapeutic effects than sulphaquinoxaline in proportional doses. However, significant synergism was demonstrated between trimethoprim and both sulphonamides in treatment of experimental infection with sulphonamide-resistant E. coli. Sows, especially primiparous, may show aggressive behavior at parturition against their own piglets, resulting in wounding or death of the piglets. Frequency, environmental influences and heritability of aggressive behavior were studied in two data sets. The first (923 first litters) was collected at an experimental farm and the other (925 first litters) came from a pig breeding organization. Frequency of aggressiveness ranged, depending on its definition, from 7 to 12%. Fixed effects of year, season and feeding level of the gilt during the rearing period did not affect the frequency of aggressiveness. A regression of aggression on postpartum sow weight was found, suggesting that low weight at first farrowing might predispose sows to aggressive behavior. Coefficients for backfat and litter size were positive but nonsignificant. Heritability of aggressiveness on the underlying normal scale, estimated from the paternal half-sib component of variance, averaged .12 for the first data set, and .25 for data set II. Estimates from daughter-dam regression were .49 and .87 for the two data sets, respectively. A simulation study indicated that this difference might be due to maternal effects. A simple application would be to select boars and gilts from non-aggressive sows only. Response to selection would be rather slow if the frequency of aggressive behavior is low. At frequencies that are too high from an economic point of view, estimation of breeding values, combining own performance and(or) data from relatives, is required. 相似文献

Methods are presented for a rapid identification of longevity components of cut Gerbera flowers. The curvature of the stem after dry storage is used to measure the structural stem strength. Flowers with strong stems are less likely to fold in the vase. Breeding flowers with strong stems is recommended when optimal post-harvest treatment cannot be guaranteed.Structural stem strength is not crucial if, by proper post-harvest treatments, the turgor of the stem can be maintained. In that case the breeder should select genotypes that are long-living under conditions of unrestricted water uptake. Cultivars of this type generally show a rapid recovery of turgor when placed in water after dry storage. 相似文献

The in vitro BHV1-specific lymphocyte stimulation assay was used to investigate immune reactivity of cattle after natural infection or vaccination with BHV1. Proliferative responses to live virus were shown in tests with peripheral blood lymphocytes of seropositive field virus-infected animals and of vaccinated animals. Nineteen out of 36 seropositive field virus-infected animals did not show in vitro responses. Nine out of 12 animals showed, at least transient, responsiveness after vaccination. Antibody titers were maintained throughout the observation period. T cell activity is believed to play a role in protection against BHV1 infection. The in vitro proliferative assay, however, can not discriminate between BHV1 seropositive and seronegative field virus-infected animals. After vaccination, the BHV1-specific lymphocyte responses of at least one animal disappeared. Both observations may point to the fact that T cell memory is generated, or at least systemically present, to a limited extent. 相似文献
