In the Andean region, the Preduza project and its partners combined breeding for durable disease resistance using locally adapted cultivars and farmer participatory methods. The approach taken resembles participatory variety selection (PVS). Farmers participated in the selection of advanced materials, rather than finished cultivars. This paper describes this approach and reports experiences with farmers–breeders collaboration. As breeders involved farmers as participants, they learned more about the most important criteria of male and female farmers for preferred cultivars in the marginal environments of Andean cropping systems. This approach encouraged the use of locally adapted cultivars (often landraces), made the breeders less dependent on foreign materials, and has resulted in selection and development of new wheat, barley, common bean, quinoa, potato and maize cultivars. Breeding programmes based on crossing locally adapted cultivars followed by selection by the breeders in the early phases of the breeding programmes and by participatory selection with the farmers in the more advanced stages of the breeding programmes appeared successful. It became clear that breeders must be well acquainted with the farmer preferences such as the requirements for specific agronomic, storage, processing and marketing traits. Over a period of five years the centralized formal breeding approach predominantly based on material produced by the international institutes was replaced by decentralized breeding approaches based largely on local germplasm with extensive farmer participation.  相似文献

Summary In small plots, adjacent to one another, a representational error can be expected when screening for quantitative forms of resistance to airborne pathogens. The representational error or interplot interference may occur as an underestimation of the level of resistance and/or as an error in the ranking of the entries tested.Four experiments were carried out with wheat (Triticum aestivum) exposed to yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis), three in Kenya, one in Mexico (exp. III).In experiment I 57 entries were compared in an unreplicated trial with three adjacent and one isolated plot situation. The range in the standard deviation of and the ranking order for disease severity (DS) between the 57 entries were the same for all plot situations at all observation dates.In experiment II nine entries from experiment I, representing a wide range of quantitative resistance and having a similar heading date, were compared in adjacent plots consisting of two rows of 10 m in eight replicates and isolated plots of one, six and ten rows of 4 m in three replicates. The range in the standard deviation of and the ranking order for DS between the entries were very similar for the four plot situations.The 10 entries in experiment III differed from those in experiment II, but represented a similar wide range of resistance. Three adjacent plot situations of 0.9×0.5 m, 0.9×2.0 m and 2.7×2.0 m, respectively, were compared with one isolated one with plots of 2.7×2.0 m. The ranking order was not affected, the range in and the standard deviation of the DS in the isolated plots were slightly larger than in the adjacent plots.In experiment IV two mixtures of two entries each were made. Per mixture one entry was fairly resistant (R) the other rather susceptible (S). Within each mixture the entries had a similar heading date. The ratios of the R:S mixtures were 0:100, 50:50, 67:33, 75:25, 82:18 and 100:0. The DS of each entry was the same as its DS in monoculture irrespective of the mixture ratio. There was no mixture effect on DS.The three experiments in Kenya gave no indication of any interplot interference occurring. In Mexico there was a very slight underestimation of the resistance in adjacent plots. The ranking order was always the same irrespective of the test plot situation. The screening of wheat for yellow rust resistance in small adjacent plots is representative for the farmers fields. This is contrary to what has been found in other windborne pathosystems such as barley-barley leaf rust (strong under estimation of resistance), barley-powdery mildew (some under estimation of resistance and different ranking order) and durum wheat-stem rust (fair under estimation of resistance).  相似文献

This experiment was carried out to investigate whether and how much field resistance to late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans, is present in the local cultivated potato germplasm. In total 36 entries were compared in a field experiment in an area highly conducive to late blight development. Of the 36 cultivars 32 were local cultivars belonging to five Solanum species, S. tuberosum (1 accession), S. andigena (18), S. juzepczukii (2), S. stenotomum (9) and S. ajanhuiri (2). The other four cultivars were derived from breeding programmes, one being the Dutch cultivar Alpha used as a highly susceptible control. The 36 cultivars were planted according to a simple 6 × 6 lattice design with three replicates. Each replicate was divided in six incomplete blocks each with six cultivars. The disease severity was assessed weekly during 9 weeks starting 48 days after planting. The area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) was used as a measure of the field resistance. Nine isolates from surrounding potato fields were tested for their virulence to the resistance genes R1–R11 using 22 differential cultivars. The components of the field resistance of 19 of these cultivars were compared in the greenhouse using a local isolate with virulence to all known R-genes, except to R9. The nine isolates represented seven races with a race complexity varying from 7 to 10 virulence factors. All isolates carried virulence against R1, R2, R3, R7, R10 and R11, while virulence against R9 was absent. The AUDPC among the 32 local cultivars ranged from very large, significantly larger than that of ‘Alpha’ to very small. The AUDPC from S. stenotomum accessions ranged from very large to intermediate, those from S. andigena accessions from large to very small. Especially among the S. andigena accessions interesting levels of field resistance were found. Four components of field resistance were assessed, latency period (LP), lesion size (LS), lesion growth rate (LGR) and relative sporulation area (RSA). All four showed a considerable variation among the cultivars. The LP ranged from 3½ to 6 days. The LS ranged from 225 mm2 to 20 mm2. The LGR varied about six-fold, the RSA more than 10-fold. The components tended to vary in association with one another. LP and LGR were well associated with each other and had a significant correlation with the AUDPC.  相似文献

Up to 100 single plant derived lines of 18 barley landraces, collected from 18 localities of six barley growing regions of Ethiopia were studied for two years at Holetta, Ethiopia for variation in five quantitative traits; scald severity, earliness, plant height, 1000 grain weight, and leafiness. The relative latent period in the adult plant stage to barley leaf rust, a good measure for partial resistance, was assessed on the landrace lines at Wageningen, The Netherlands. The observed variation between and within landraces was very large for all traits. The magnitude of variation was so large that most, if not all, plants within a landrace had a different genotype. The landraces also varied in the degree of variation. Some landraces, 1726 and 3288 for instance, were more variable for most or all traits than other landraces such as 208925 and 212938. Days to heading and scald severity were significantly (P = 0.01) correlated with altitude, r being 0.66 and - 0.65, respectively. Resistance to scald and leafiness also increased with altitude. On average landraces became later, more resistant to scald and more leafy the higher the altitude of collection. This associated complex of traits could be an adaptation to the wetter and cooler conditions at higher altitudes. Summary Lesion length, leaf length, and leaf width were measured on infected leaves two weeks after clip inoculation of 64 rice cultivars with two virulent isolates of Xanthomonas campestris pv. oryzae (X.c. pv. oryzae). No significant correlation was found between the lesion length and the leaf dimensions, indicating that physical leaf size does not affect the spread of the bacteria once these have entered the leaf. Lesion length is therefore an acceptable parameter for assessing resistance to (X.c. pv. oryzae), and is to be preferred above the parameter percentage diseased leaf area (% DLA), especially when small differences between genotypes are to be assessed. The confounding influence of differences in leaf length can cause large changes in the ranking order of cultivars when assessed by the % DLA. For this reason lesion length is a better assessor of the value of a quantitative resistance for breeding and research purposes than % DLA.  相似文献

Summary Two spring barley composites, one based on eight West-European two-rowed cultivars (A) and one, the predominantly six-rowed composite XXI, based on several thousands of barley cultivars (B), formed the starting point of a recurrent selection procedure. The aim was to study whether recurrent selection in early generations is an effective procedure to improve barley populations for agronomic characteristics, especially grain yield.After two cycles of recurrent selection in the two populations A and B separately, and consisting of single plant selection followed by line selection, one cycle of recurrent selection was applied to the population produced by intercrossing the selected A and selected B lines.The selection for grain yield in the F2 single plant stages and the F3 line stages was carried out by selecting the plants or lines with the largest mean head weight provided that they did not tiller too poorly. Also some selection was applied against extremes in heading date and against tall plants.After two cycles of recurrent selection the grain yield, tested over two years and two locations, had increased with 16.5% in population A and with 27.0% in population B. Both the single plant selection and the line selection had contributed significantly to this response.The population created by crossing the selected A with the selected B lines showed a significant reduction in yield compared to the mean yield of the A and B lines constituting this population. Single plant selection, followed by line selection did raise the yield level 5.7% above that of the mean of these A and B lines. Several lines produced from this intercross combined an excellent grain yield with outstanding resistance to barley leaf rust and powdery mildew. However, these lines like the entire intercross population suffered from susceptibility to lodging, a characteristic derived from population B.In five experimental situations mixtures of genotypes were compared with the mean of the monocultures of the constituting genotypes. The corpus luteum (CL) of the pig lacks luteolytic sensitivity (LS) to prostaglandin (PG) F‐2α until after day 12 of the oestrous cycle, but the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are poorly understood. As luteolysis involves apoptosis, we hypothesized that critical apoptotic proteins may be deficient in CLs that lack LS. The specific aim of these studies was to examine mRNA expression and protein levels of apoptosis genes/proteins (BAX/Bax, BCLX/Bcl‐x, CASP3/Caspase‐3, CASP8/Caspase‐8, NFΚB1/NFκB, TP53/p53) in porcine CLs collected at different stages of the oestrous cycle. CLs were collected surgically, mRNA and protein extracted, and expression/levels analyzed by semi‐quantitative (SQ) PCR and Western blots, respectively. At the mRNA expression level, only BAX (maximal on day 4) and TP53 (maximal on day 7) showed significant variations during the oestrous cycle. At the protein level, only Bcl‐x and Caspase‐3 showed significant changes during the cycle; Bcl‐x decreased on day 13 and Caspase‐3 increased on day 13. It is concluded that apoptosis‐associated proteins (i.e. Bcl‐x and Caspase 3) may play a critical role in luteolytic sensitivity in the pig.  相似文献

The overwintering and the epidemic development in spring of leaf rust was studied in 11 winter barley cultivars at two different sites near Wageningen in 1976/1977. The amount of leaf rust decreased through the winter at both sites. Cultivars differed considerably in the amount of leaf rust in late winter. Both the moment and the rate of increase of leaf rust after the winter varied with cultivars. The ultimate amount of leaf rust in a cultivar was therefore determined by three factors: The amount of overwintering leaf rust, the onset of leaf rust increase and the rate of increase. The latter was determined by the partial resistance of the cultivar. Why the epidemics did not start at the same moment is yet unknown. The differential overwintering could be explained from the amounts of leaf rust and powdery mildew at the start of the winter, the effect of powdery mildew being a negative one. The correlation coefficient between the values observed in March and those predicted from the December leaf rust and powdery mildew readings was 0.93. In a second experiment carried out in 1979/1980 with six winter barley cultivars chosen from the first experiment the powdery mildew was succesfully excluded by treatment with fungicides. There was no decrease in the leaf rust over the winter nor a differential cultivar effect on overwintering.  相似文献
