A technique for catheterizing male small ruminants is described. The barrier formed by the presence of the urethral diverticulum is avoided by the use of a pre-curved catheter. The technique enables application of contrast studies of bladder and urethra in animals suspected of urolithiasis. Differentiation between cystitis and obstructive urolithiasis is possible and the indications for urethrostomy can be reduced. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Seventeen isolates of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum from the Ivory Coast were characterized using vegetative compatibility group (VCG), restriction fragment length polymorphism of the ribosomal inter-genic spacer region (IGS), and mating type (MAT) idiomorph, and compared with a worldwide collection of the pathogen containing all available reference strains. Some of the isolates were identical to known reference strains for all three traits, whereas others had previously unknown varieties of IGS and (possibly) VCG. One or the other MAT idiomorph was present in each of the new isolates and the reference strains. The new isolates and reference strains were grouped based upon the three traits. Strains from the Ivory Coast were found in 7 of 11 groups detected, suggesting multiple sources for Fusarium wilt in the country. White rhinoceros anaesthetised with etorphine and azaperone combination develop adverse physiological changes including hypoxia, hypercapnia, acidosis, tachycardia and hypertension. These changes are more marked in field-anaesthetised rhinoceros. This study was designed to develop a technique to improve safety for field-anaesthetised white rhinoceros by tracheal intubation and oxygen insufflation. Twenty-five free-ranging white rhinoceros were anaesthetised with an etorphine and azaperone combination for translocation or placing microchips in their horns. Once anaesthetised the rhinoceros were monitored prior to crating for transportation or during microchip placement. Physiological measurements included heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure and arterial blood gas samples. Eighteen rhinoceros were intubated using an equine nasogastric tube passed nasally into the trachea and monitored before and after tracheal insufflation with oxygen. Seven rhinoceros were not intubated or insufflated with oxygen and served as controls. All anaesthetised rhinoceros were initially hypoxaemic (percentage arterial haemoglobin oxygen saturation (%O2Sa) = 49% +/- 16 (mean +/- SD) and PaO2 = 4.666 +/- 1.200 kPa (35 +/- 9 mm Hg)), hypercapnic (PaCO2 = 8.265 +/- 1.600 kPa (62 +/- 12 mm Hg)) and acidaemic (pHa = 7.171 +/- 0.073 ). Base excess was -6.7 +/- 3.9 mmol/l, indicating a mild to moderate metabolic acidosis. The rhinoceros were also hypertensive (systolic blood pressure = 21.861 +/- 5.465 kPa (164 +/- 41 mm Hg)) and tachycardic (HR = 107 +/- 31/min). Following nasal tracheal intubation and insufflation, the %O2Sa and PaO2 increased while blood pHa and PaCO2 remained unchanged. Tracheal intubation via the nose is not difficult, and when oxygen is insufflated, the PaO2 and the %O2Sa increases, markedly improving the safety of anaesthesia, but this technique does not correct the hypercapnoea or acidosis. OBJECTIVE: To describe the pool-raft recovery system protocol and to evaluate the clinical outcome in horses that underwent recovery from general anesthesia using this system. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 393 horses that underwent recovery from general anesthesia in the pool-raft system. PROCEDURE: Anesthetic records were examined from horses recovered from anesthesia in the pool-raft system between January 1984 and December 2000. Complete medical records of horses were examined when available. Information regarding the anesthetic and recovery period was recorded. Horses first recovered from general anesthesia in the pool-raft and, once awake, were transported to a recovery stall and lowered to the floor in a standing position. RESULTS: 351 horses underwent 1 pool-raft recovery, and 42 horses underwent multiple pool-raft recoveries. Most horses were recovered from general anesthesia within the pool-raft system to safeguard repair of a major orthopedic injury. During 471 pool-raft recoveries, 34 (7%) horses had complications within the recovery pool and 62 (13%) had complications within the recovery stall. Deaths resulted from complete failure of internal fixation, pulmonary dysfunction, or a combination of pulmonary dysfunction and fixation failure in 2% (10/471) of horses that underwent pool-raft recoveries. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The pool-raft system is a good option for recovery from general anesthesia. Although not a fail-safe system, it appears to decrease the complications of recovering horses in a high-risk category. Equine acute abdominal disease is often associated with shock. Important aspects in the onset of this complication include hypovolaemia, the translocation of endotoxins from the gut and the subsequent activation of the cytokine network. The clinical efficacy of high volume continuous venovenous haemofiltration (HV-CVVH) and the clearance of cytokines were therefore investigated in an equine endotoxaemic model. Ten male Shetland ponies received a slow infusion of LPS (2 microg/kg bwt) under general anaesthesia. The treatment group (n = 5) received HV-CVVH (2 ml/kg bwt/min) using a 75 kD polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA filter). Haemodynamic, blood variable and cytokine (TNF, IL-1 and IL-6) measurements were performed every 30 min for a 6 h period. The ponies showed a typical reaction in mean pulmonary arterial pressure, blood chemical and haematological markers after LPS challenge. No significant differences were found between the treatment group and the control group. Only a slight increase in cardiac index and no marked decrease in mean arterial pressure were seen. A clear cytokine response was found in all ponies, though substantially different in magnitude between individuals. The clearance of cytokines from the blood increased in time, but did not lead to significant decrease in serum levels. In this study, HV-CVVH with a PMMA filter did not prove to have a significant beneficial effect on the course of experimental endotoxaemia in horses. However, in a more severe model, better efficacy might be obtained. Testing additional filters might lead to a more suitable therapy for horses. 相似文献

Energy balances of cocks and chickens were measured using the nitrogen-carbon-balance method. In Experiment 1 twelve adult White Leghorn cocks were fed alternately on a basal ration or on a supplemental ration composed of 75% basal diet and 25% carbohydrate source as a supplement. In Experiment 2 six groups of 12 male broiler chickens were fed successively on two diets each with different carbohydrate sources (40% of DM) and on two energy levels. The investigated carbohydrate sources were glucose, fructose, sucrose, maize starch, raw and steamed potato starch, dried sugar beet pulp, tapioca, wheat, maize, rye and barley. In both experiments the energy digestibility of the diets with raw potato starch, beet pulp and barley was significantly lower compared to the other diets. Digestibility of those ranged from 88 to 81%. By simple linear regression no significant differences in efficiency of utilisation of ME of the diets between the carbohydrate sources sugars, starches and cereal grains could be proved.
