ABSTRACT

Gold kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis Planch. var. chinensis ‘HORT16A’, marketed as ZESPRI?' ‘HORT16A’) is an important export crop for New Zealand. Nutrient management, including the application of nitrogen (N), for ‘HORT16A’ kiwifruit has mimicked strategies for the green (A. deliciosa ‘Hayward’) cultivar, however, physiological differences between Actinidia species necessitate the development of specific nutrient regimes for ‘HORT16A’ vines. In this trial, all nutrients, except N, were applied at levels comparable to commercial practice. The Control treatment received approximately 145 kg N ha/y, and was based on estimates of total N removed each year in the harvested fruit. The Zero-N treatment vines received all nutrients except N, and the High-N treatment received double the Control, approximately 295 kg N ha/y, for two consecutive seasons. The High-N treatment represents the upper limit of N application practices in commercial ‘HORT16A’ kiwifruit production. Zero-N fruit had higher calcium (Ca) and lower N concentration than High-N fruit in both seasons. Fruit potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) concentrations were equivalent between these treatments in both seasons. Fruit phosphorus (P) concentration throughout the season was increased in the High-N treatment in both years. Fruit sizes were not different between treatments at final harvest in Year 1, being 130.5 ± 4.13 g, 125 ± 1.49 g, and 125 ± 3.29 g for the High, Control, and Zero-N vines, respectively. Larger fruit were harvested from the High-N vines (125 ± 4.69 g) in Year 2, than from either Control (113 ± 2.03 g) or Zero-N (118 ± 1.03 g) vines. Percent fruit dry matter (DM) content was higher in the Zero-N fruit (17.2 ± 0.06, 17.2 ± 0.06, and 16.8 ± 0.14 for Zero, Control, and High-N vines) at final harvest in Year 1. But values of fruit DM for all treatments were similar in Year 2 in spite of fruit size differences between treatments. Fruit DM for all treatments was slightly higher in Year 2 than in Year 1. Differences in fruit mineral concentration and fruit maturity at harvest may have contributed to increased incidence of low temperature breakdown (LTB) in the High-N fruit in Year 1. In Year 2, when fruit DM was higher in all treatments, yellow coloration was more developed. Total fruit N concentration was lower in Year 2 for all treatments than in Year 1, and LTB was minimal and not different between treatments.

Leaves from Zero-N vines had reduced N in both years compared with Control and High-N vines. In contrast, leaf Ca and Mg concentrations were reduced in High N-vines, compared with values recorded in Zero-N vines in both seasons. Leaf K concentrations were comparable between treatments in both seasons. Leaf sulfur (S) concentration was reduced under the High-N treatment, and leaf P levels were increased under the High-N treatment in both years.

These data demonstrate that N application influences the uptake and accumulation of other mineral elements in ‘HORT16A’ kiwifruit. In order to encourage desirable nutrient concentrations in both the fruit and leaves of ‘HORT16A’ kiwifruit, a reduction in N applied is suggested, and this would have little or no detrimental effect on vine performance over two seasons. Reduced N application will also reduce nitrate leaching which is estimated at 39 kg N ha/y under the Control treatment.  相似文献

The major by-product from the production of pea protein concentrate is pea starch, and this starch can be an alternative source of starch compared to for instance starch from wheat in diets for pigs. However, differences in energy utilization between pea starch and cereal starch could affect the animals' production performance. In this study data from 100 Norwegian Landrace x Yorkshire sows was collected to investigate if inclusion of 20% pea starch meal (Pisum sativum L) in diets for lactating sows affected sow and litter performance. Two cereal grain based diets were formulated, but in one of the diets part of the wheat inclusion was replaced with pea starch meal. Data collection included registrations of sow daily feed consumption, individual weight and backfat measures, litter weights, measurement of blood glucose level after feeding and reproductive performance. Sows offered the pea diet had a higher average daily (P<0.0001), weekly (P<0.01) and total feed consumption (P<0.0001) during lactation. They also had a lower weight loss during the first three weeks of lactation (P<0.001). During the last two weeks of lactation sows in both groups were on average gaining weight, but the sows offered the control diet had the highest gain in this period (P<0.05). There was a tendency for a higher backfat loss in the pea group during the first three weeks of lactation (P=0.10), but no difference was found in overall backfat loss between treatments (P>0.05). Dietary treatment did not affect litter performance during lactation (P>0.05). The weaning-to-service interval was higher among the first parity sows offered the pea diet compared to the first parity sows offered the control diet (P<0.05). Blood glucose was not affected by dietary treatment within the chosen timeframe of this study (P>0.05). This study shows that pea starch meal can be used as an alternative source of starch in diets for lactating sows. The sows offered the pea diet had the highest feed consumption during lactation, and although this was not reflected in higher weaning weights, it was reflected in an improved body condition at weaning.  相似文献

A rare congenital dermatosis, characterized by progressive hypotrichosis with variable scaling and crusting, occurred in 10 short-haired kittens in North America and Europe. Lesions appeared at between 4 and 12 weeks of age, commencing on the head and becoming generalized. The tail was spared in two kittens. Generalized scaling was mild to moderate, often with prominent follicular casts. Periocular, perioral, pinnal and ear canal crusting was occasionally severe. The skin was thick and wrinkled in two kittens. Histologically, the main lesion was abnormal sebaceous gland morphology. Instead of regular differentiation from basal cells to mature sebocytes, the glands were composed of a haphazard collection of undifferentiated basaloid cells, some partly vacuolated and a few containing eosinophilic globules. Mitotic figures and apoptotic cells were present in an irregularly thickened follicular isthmus. Lymphocytic mural folliculitis and mild sebaceous adenitis were rare. Orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis and follicular casts were present. Hair follicles were of normal density and were mostly in anagen, but some contained malacic hair shafts. Perforating folliculitis, leading to dermal trichogranuloma formation, occurred occasionally. Further biopsy samples taken at 2 years and at 3 and 4 years, respectively, from two kittens revealed similar but often more severe sebaceous gland lesions. Hair follicles were smaller, with many in telogen. The young age of onset suggests a genetic defect interfering with sebaceous and, possibly, follicular development. These lesions are discussed with reference to studies of mouse mutants in which genetic defects in sebaceous differentiation cause a similar phenotype of hyperkeratosis and progressive alopecia.  相似文献

The present study examined the effect of acute lipoprivation on pulsatile luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion in both normal-fat diet, ad libitum-fed and fasted female rats. To produce an acute lipoprivic condition, mercaptoacetate (MA), an inhibitor of fatty acid oxidation, was administered intraperitoneally to ad libitum-fed or 24-h fasted ovariectomized (OVX) rats with or without an estradiol (E2) implant, that produces a negative feedback effect on LH pulses. The steroid treatment was performed to determine the effect of estrogen on lipoprivic changes in LH release, because estrogen enhances fasting- or glucoprivation-induced suppression of LH pulses. Pulsatile LH secretion was suppressed by MA administration in a dose-dependent manner in the ad libitum-fed OVX and OVX+E2 rats. LH pulses were more severely suppressed in the 24-h-fasted OVX and OVX+E2 rats compared to the ad libitum-fed rats. Estrogen slightly enhanced lipoprivic suppression but the effect was not significant. In the present study, increased plasma glucose and free-fatty acid concentrations may indicate a blockade of fatty acid metabolism by the MA treatment, but food intake was not affected by any of the MA doses. Acute vagotomy did not block lipoprivic suppression of LH pulses. Thus, the present study indicates that lipid metabolism is important for maintenance of normal reproductive function even in rats fed a normal-fat diet and lipoprivation may be more critical in fasted animals that probably rely more heavily on fatty acid oxidation to maintain appropriate metabolic fuel levels. In addition, failure of blockade of lipoprivic LH inhibition by vagotomy suggests that lipoprivic information resulting in LH suppression is not transmitted to the brain via the vagus nerve.  相似文献

Salt gland function and osmoregulation in aquatic birds drinking hyperosmotic water has been suggested to be impaired by organophosphorus insecticides. To test this hypothesis, adult black ducks (Anas rubripes) were provided various regimens of fresh or salt (1.5% NaCl) water before, during, and after ingestion of mash containing 21 ppm fenthion. Ducks were bled by jugular venipuncture after 1, 7, and 12 days of treatment, and were then killed. Brain and salt gland acetylcholinesterase activities were substantially inhibited (44–61% and 14–36%) by fenthion. However, salt gland weight and Na+-K+-ATPase activity, and plasma Na+, Cl?, and osmolality, were uniformly elevated in all groups receiving salt water including those ingesting fenthion. In a second study, salt gland Na+-K+-ATPase activity in mallards (A. platyrhynchos) was not affected after in vitro incubation with either fenthion oxon at concentrations ranging from 0.04 to 400 μM, but was reduced in the presence of 40 and 400 μM DDE (positive control). These findings suggest than environmentally realistic concentrations of organophosphorus insecticides do not markedly affect osmoregulatory function in adult black ducks.  相似文献

Much interest has developed in the use of sticky yellow boards to control the greenhouse whitefly. Such yellow boards are now produced for sale by several commercial companies. This paper summarizes experiments that assess the importance of various factors affecting trap efficacy, such as colour, position and quality of adhesive. Because the experiments were conducted under natural greenhouse conditions, growers will find the recommendations directly applicable. The most important variable is colour. Bright yellow was most attractive, having a reflectance spectrum with little or no reflectance in the blue-violet, a sharp rise beginning at 500 nm, reaching 30% at 540 nm and 90% at 570 nm, and continuing this level of reflectance into the far red. Boards should be positioned so that they hang down into the foliage, with their tops roughly even with the canopy. The adhesive should be chosen with care, since powdery wings of whiteflies allow them to escape from many adhesives. Several polybutene-type adhesives were suitable.  相似文献
