Low-mass stars, approximately 1 to 2 solar masses, near the Main Sequence are efficient at producing the helium isotope 3He, which they mix into the convective envelope on the giant branch and should distribute into the Galaxy by way of envelope loss. This process is so efficient that it is difficult to reconcile the low observed cosmic abundance of 3He with the predictions of both stellar and Big Bang nucleosynthesis. Here we find, by modeling a red giant with a fully three-dimensional hydrodynamic code and a full nucleosynthetic network, that mixing arises in the supposedly stable and radiative zone between the hydrogen-burning shell and the base of the convective envelope. This mixing is due to Rayleigh-Taylor instability within a zone just above the hydrogen-burning shell, where a nuclear reaction lowers the mean molecular weight slightly. Thus, we are able to remove the threat that 3He production in low-mass stars poses to the Big Bang nucleosynthesis of 3He.  相似文献

The ultrasmoothness of diamond-like carbon coatings is explained by an atomistic/continuum multiscale model. At the atomic scale, carbon ion impacts induce downhill currents in the top layer of a growing film. At the continuum scale, these currents cause a rapid smoothing of initially rough substrates by erosion of hills into neighboring hollows. The predicted surface evolution is in excellent agreement with atomic force microscopy measurements. This mechanism is general, as shown by similar simulations for amorphous silicon. It explains the recently reported smoothing of multilayers and amorphous transition metal oxide films and underlines the general importance of impact-induced downhill currents for ion deposition, polishing, and nanopattering.  相似文献

A procedure was developed for marker-assisted selection of complex traits for common bean (Phaseolus vulgarisL.) using an index based on QTL-linked markers and ultrametric genetic distances between lines and a target parent. A comparison of the mean seed yields of the top five lines selected by different schemes demonstrated that the highest yielding group was selected on the basis of a combination of phenotypic performance and a high QTL-based index,followed by groups identified by a high QTL-based-index, conventional selection,and a low QTL-based-index. This study demonstrated a simple way to use information obtained from QTL studies to make selection decisions. The study also showed that the use of the QTL-based-index in conjunction with the ultrametric genetic distance to the target parent would enablea plant breeder to select lines that retain important QTL in a desirable genetic background. Therefore, this type of MAS would be expected to be superior to the phenotypic selection. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Although spate irrigation systems are risk-prone, they can be an important component for livelihood security in semi-arid areas. Spate uses water (flood water), which upstream users often do not require, as rainfall during these periods is more than sufficient. The use of this flood water for spate irrigation is therefore a good opportunity to convert water with a low opportunity cost to high value water. As more rivers are closing, due to socio-economic and climate changes, spate irrigation may become increasingly relevant in semi-arid areas. Spate irrigation systems pose institutional and technical challenges: collective action is challenged by complex upstream-downstream interactions between users within the system, and the high labour demands for regular reconstruction of temporary diversion weirs and intake structures. This paper describes a spate irrigation system in Makanya village, Tanzania that emerged in response to increased upstream water use. We use three of the four dimensions (hydrological, hydraulic and sociological) of spate irrigation proposed by Van Steenbergen (1997) to assess the Makanya spate irrigation system. The Makanya spate irrigation system has an organisational structure that is similar to the canal irrigation (furrow) committees located upstream, and effectively deals with the institutional demands of managing water in spate irrigation systems. Water allocation is reminiscent to the water sharing arrangements existing in the full irrigation system, which previously was in place at the site and in the high- and midlands of the Makanya catchment and therefore set this system apart from the traditional spate irrigation practice elsewhere. Technically, a major challenge is the reconstruction of the head works after each flood. Another aspect is the changes in the river bed. Flash floods carry sediments that deposit on the fields, raising the elevation of the irrigated land every year and making it increasingly difficult for the river water to enter the plots. Improving system efficiency through modernisation of the diversion and distribution structures in this case is not feasible due to the huge amounts of sediments delivered to the system each year. Instead investments in conjunctive use of groundwater could be the solution because it involves a relatively small intervention, minimises the physical disturbance of the system, and therefore is likely to respect the existing locally developed water management arrangements.  相似文献

Differences in water activity within multicomponent food systems inevitably lead to moisture (re)distribution phenomena, hence deteriorating textural quality during shelf life. Noninvasive assessment of moisture transport in such systems would promote mechanistic understanding and enable rational development of strategies to control migration. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an ideal candidate for such a measurement technique, but its use in systems with low-moisture components (e.g., cereal materials) is seriously hampered because of reduced transverse relaxation times. In this work, we report two MRI protocols for the noninvasive and quantitative assessment of moisture transport in multicomponent food products. The first protocol is suitable to study relatively slow (days/weeks) processes, whereas the second one is designed to study fast (hours) moisture transport. We have successfully applied this methodology to quantify moisture transport within multicomponent food systems, with adequate temporal and spatial resolution.  相似文献

The use of a column containing 60 g of silica gel for cleanup and the use of isobutane as a reactant reagent for chemical ionization-mass spectrometric analysis of the saturated and monounsaturated alkyl side-chain 2-alkylcyclobutanones (2-ACBs; specifically induced by irradiation from fat in foods until the proof of contrary) has improved both the sensibility and the selectivity of the method when applied for the detection of irradiated foods. The quality of the chromatograms obtained was improved, allowing the detection of food samples (avocados) irradiated at low doses (0.1 kGy) or irradiated ingredients included in low proportions (less than 5%, wt/wt) in nonirradiated culinary foods. These analytical modifications for the detection of 2-ACBs on the official EN 1785 method enable an extension of its current field of application using common equipment of food quality control laboratories.  相似文献

On the basis of the recent findings that "biogenic amines" can also be formed during thermal food processing from their parent amino acids in a Strecker-type reaction, the formation of 3-aminopropionamide, the biogenic amine of asparagine, was investigated in model systems as well as in thermally processed Gouda cheese. The results of model studies revealed that, besides acrylamide, 3-aminopropionamide was also formed in amounts of 0.1-0.4 mol % when asparagine was reacted in the presence of either glucose or 2-oxopropionic acid. Results of a second series of model experiments in which [(13)C(4)(15)N(2)]-asparagine ([(13)C(4)(15)N(2)]-Asn) and unlabeled 3-aminopropionamide were reacted together in the presence of glucose revealed a >12-fold higher efficacy of 3-aminopropionamide in acrylamide generation as compared to asparagine. Both [(13)C(3)(15)N(2)]-3-aminopropionamide and [(13)C(3)(15)N(1)]-acrylamide were formed during [(13)C(4)(15)N(2)]-Asn degradation in a ratio of about 1:4, supporting the idea that 3-aminopropionamide is a transient intermediate in acrylamide formation. In this study, 3-aminopropionamide was identified and quantified for the first time in foods, namely, in Gouda cheese. Although the fresh cheese contained low amounts of 3-aminopropionamide, its concentrations were much increased to approximately 1300 mug/kg after thermal processing. In isotope labeling studies, performed by administering to the cheese [(13)C(4)(15)N(2)]-Asn in a ratio of 1:2 as compared to the "natural" concentrations of asparagine, similar ratios of unlabeled/labeled 3-aminopropionamide and unlabeled/labeled acrylamide were determined. Thus, 3-aminopropionamide could be verified as a transient intermediate of acrylamide formation during food processing.  相似文献
