A retrospective study was conducted to investigate the cause of rectal prolapse in working donkeys in Ethiopia. Analysis of
data on rectal prolapse cases obtained from the Donkey Health and Welfare Project clinic at the School of Veterinary Medicine,
Addis Ababa University, from 1995 to 2004 revealed that 83.6% (n = 177) of the cases were associated with Gasterophilus nasalis. The rest 10.7% and 5.7% were associated with work-related (overloading) cause and diarrhoea, respectively. The mean and
median numbers of G. nasalis recovered from the rectum of infected donkeys were 66 and 64, respectively, with a range of 2–195. Over 100 G. nasalis larvae were recovered from the rectum of 22% of the donkeys. Circular demarcated ulcer-like and deep circumferential pits
or ring-like mucosal lesions were found at the larval attachment sites. G. nasalis infection and the associated rectal prolapse were observed year round. However, the intensity of rectal larval infection
and incidence of rectal prolapse were significantly higher during the rainy season (P < 0.01). Age and sex of the donkeys had no significant effect on the intensity of rectal larval infection and incidence of

Complete removal of roots from soil samples is a prerequisite for most of the chemical and biological analyses. A simple electrostatic method of separating roots from sieved, largely mineral soil substrates was optimized and examined by the addition of 14C labeled fine roots to sandy, silt loamy and clay loamy samples. Depending on soil texture, between 40% and 50% of fine roots can be removed from 100 g of sieved soil in less than 10 minutes. The root‐free soil substrate and the extracted roots can be used for analyzes or experiments immediately after the separation. The proportion of the mineral particles remaining in the root fraction depends on duration of separation, distance between the charged plate and the sample, and soil texture. The proportion of separated mineral particles is about 90%—95% (w/w) in sandy and 70%—85% in silt loamy and clay loamy substrates. The electrostatic method of root separation may take place before the analysis of Ct and Nt contents, and is suitable for soil samples preparation for incubation experiments. 相似文献

Tomàtiga de Ramellet (Ramellet) is a traditional long-storage tomato from the Mediterranean Islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa (Ibiza), and Formentera (Balearic Islands). To investigate the observed phenotypic and shelf life variability within local varieties, we studied 142 accessions characterized as Ramellet varieties, and 29 accessions representing other local varieties. The 171 accessions constitute a new germplasm collection at the University of Balearic Islands (UIB). The evaluation of the collection demonstrated wide variability in most agronomic, morphological and quality traits of Ramellet accessions and clearly differentiates them from other local varieties with respect to fruit shape, size, fruit composition, and fruit storage. All accessions of Ramellet evaluated have the ripening mutation alcobaça (alc), suggesting an important role for this variant in controlling shelf life. Results of evaluation also showed wide variability between the Ramellet accessions for storage time, suggesting that other traits like fruit size and composition may play a role in fruit conservation. Observed variation within the Ramellet accessions is consistent with a genetically variable population or landrace group. The establishment of this collection will help prevent genetic erosion of this local landrace group and constitute a resource for future investigation and breeding. 相似文献

The potential utility of micrometer-sized particles as controlled-release devices for the volatilization of insect pheromones for mating disruption applications is evaluated in this study for two pheromone/model compound systems (codlemone/1-dodecanol and disparlure/1,2-epoxyoctadecane). To expedite the measurement of release rates from these particle devices, two techniques based on thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) have been exploited: isothermal TGA (I-TGA) at elevated temperatures (40-80 degrees C) with N(2) convection and volatilization temperature (VT) by dynamic TGA. A correlation between these two methods has been established. Samples that exhibit a higher VT provide a lower release rate from a particle substrate. Using these techniques, it has been demonstrated that chemical interactions between adsorbed liquids and particle surfaces may play a small role in defining release characteristics under conditions of low surface area, whereas parameters associated with total surface area and micropore structure appear to be much more significant in retarding evaporation for uncoated particles containing an adsorbed liquid. Additional regulation of release rates was achieved by coating the particle systems with water-soluble or water-dispersible polymers. By careful selection of particle porosity and coating composition, it is envisioned that the evaporation rate of pheromones can be tailored to specific insect control applications. 相似文献
