This study aimed to evaluate the effect of lutein supplementation on growth, survival and skin pigmentation for goldfish juveniles. Four diets enriched with different carotenoid sources (lutein, astaxanthin, canthaxanthin and a combination of lutein and canthaxanthin) were compared to a control diet without carotenoid supplementation. The carotenoid inclusion level was standardized at 50 mg kg‐1 in all treatments. 240 goldfish juveniles (1.07?0.57 g) were cultivated in 30 aquariums (30L) during 84 days. The experimental design was completely randomized with five treatments and six replicates. The dietary inclusion of carotenoid pigments did not affect the growth and feeding efficiency of goldfish juveniles. Supplementation with lutein presented higher survival values when compared to the other treatments. Astaxanthin and canthaxanthin supplementation increased the concentration of carotenoids on the skin of goldfish juveniles in relation to the control treatment. For the fish fed with the diet containing lutein, the skin pigmentation was as efficient as astaxanthin and canthaxanthin, but did not differ from the control and combined treatment (canthaxanthin + lutein). The lutein supplementation (50 mg kg‐1) improved survival and promoted efficient carotenoid pigmentation on the skin of goldfish juveniles.  相似文献

Purpose

Prescribed burning is a forest management practice which can lead to nitrogen (N)-limited conditions. This study aimed to explore whether biological N2 fixation (BNF) remained the main source of N acquisition for two understorey Acacia species in a Eucalyptus-dominated suburban forest of subtropical Australia, 3 to 6 years after prescribed burning. Root-nodule bacteria associated with these acacias were also characterised to unravel the differences in rhizobial communities between sites and species.

Material and methods

Two sites, burned 3 and 6 years before sample collection, were selected within a dry subtropical forest of south-east Queensland, Australia. Leaves were collected from individuals of Acacia disparrima and A. leiocalyx at each site to determine leaf total carbon (C) and N content, C and N isotope composition (δ13C and δ15N) and the percentage of N derived from atmospheric N2. Nodules were harvested from both acacia species at each site to isolate root nodule bacteria. Bacterial isolates were processed for 16S rDNA gene sequencing.

Results and discussion

Generally, no differences were found in plant physiological variables between the two acacia species. Six years after the fire, both species still depended upon BNF for their N supply, with a higher dependence in winter than in summer. Fire, although of low intensity, was likely to have created a N-limited environment which induced the reliance of legumes on BNF. Root nodule bacteria were dominated by non-rhizobial endophytes, mainly from the Firmicutes phylum. No difference in nodule bacterial diversity was found between sites. The relative abundance of rhizobial genera varied amongst plant species and sites, with a shift in dominance from Bradyrhizobium to Rhizobium species between sites 1 and 2.

Conclusions

Our results show that even 6 years after burning, ecosystem remained under N stress and BNF was still the main mechanism for N acquisition by the understorey legumes.

Responses of terrestrial ecosystems to a world undergoing a change in atmospheric CO2 concentration presents a formidable challenge to terrestrial ecosystem scientists. Strong relationships among climate, atmosphere, soils and biota at many different temporal and spatial scales make the understanding and prediction of changes in net ecosystem production (NEP) at a global scale difficult. Global C cycle models have implicitly attempted to account for some of this complexity by adapting lower pool sizes and smaller flux rates representing large regions and long temporal averages than values appropriate for a small area. However, it is becoming increasingly evident that terrestrial ecosystems may be experiencing a strong transient forcing as a result of increasing levels of atmospheric CO2 that will require a finer temporal and spatial representation of terrestrial systems than the parameters for current global C cycle models allow. To adequately represent terrestrial systems in the global C cycle it is necessary to explicitly model the response of terrestrial systems to primary environmental factors. While considerable progress has been made experimentally and conceptually in aspects of photosynthetic responses, and gross and net primary production, the application of this understanding to NEP at individual sites is not well developed. This is an essential step in determining effects of plant physiological responses on the global C cycle. We use a forest stand succession model to explore the effects of several possible plant responses to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration. These simulations show that ecosystem C storage can be increased by increases in individual tree growth rate, reduced transpiration, or increases in fine root production commensurate with experimental observations.  相似文献

Water samples from twelve wells on the coastal aquifer of Israel were analyzed for γ-BHC (lindane), α-BHC, aldrin, o.p1.DDD, p.p1.DDT, dieldrin, heptachlor and heptachlor-epoxide. Lindane was found in five wells with concentrations ranging from traces to 15 ppt. α-BHC was detected in one well (4 ppt). None of the other pesticides could be detected. The wells where lindane was detected were between 13 m and 26 m deep and the soil above the water table was sandy. Lindane occurrence is attributed to heavy localized applications and downward movement of water in considerable quantities. Analysis of the potential mobility of lindane indicates that it can be rather mobile in sandy soils.  相似文献

A histological grading system of oesophageal sarcomas has not been established. Thirty-two cases of oesophageal sarcomas have been reviewed for tumour characteristics and clinical outcome. Nineteen dogs underwent surgical intervention to remove oesophageal tumours; ten of them survived (median 278 days). Primary tumour types included osteosarcoma (47%), osteosarcoma with tumour giant cells (7%), fibroblastic osteosarcoma (13%), chondroblastic osteosarcoma (7%) fibrosarcoma (23%) and undifferentiated sarcoma (3%). Histological grade evaluation revealed 33% grade 1 sarcoma, 50% grade 2 and 17% grade 3. No correlation could be found between survival and signalment, duration of clinical signs, tumour type, tumour grade and chemotherapy. Chemotherapy was found to reduce lung metastases' histological scores in three cases (P=0.0007). Surgery seems to be the treatment of choice but the effect of chemotherapy warrants further investigation. Additional research of cases should be performed in order to further define prognostic factors of oesophageal sarcomas.  相似文献

Estimating yields (leaf dry weights) of Erythroxylum coca var. coca Lam. (coca) in regions where there is no access requires a method that can be used remotely. A simulation model that characterizes coca growth under varying weather conditions offers such a method. To develop this model, crop response to its environment must be quantified. The current experiment examined how a range in nitrogen (N) availability affected N status of various parts of the coca plant and components of yield. Minimal and maximal values for N concentration in leaves, stems, and roots were determined and N status calculated. Young leaves (a small yield component) had the highest N concentration, the greatest demand for N, and snowed the greatest N stress. Old leaves had the next highest N concentration and a high demand for N, but showed the lowest N stress. Nitrogen status in old leaves was most affected by N availability. Dry weights of each leaf type increased with increased N availability, but leaf cocaine concentration was not affected. Stems and taproots had the lowest N concentrations and these were not affected by N availability. Lateral roots, closer to the source of N, had N concentrations that reflected N availability, however lateral root dry weights were not affected by N supply. Increased N availability increased (a) the number of growing points on the plant, (b) the number of leaves per growing point, and (c) the size of old leaves. Increases in these components translate into increased yields. Leaf yields correlated with the N status of leaves (r=0.58, p≤0.001), but variability in leaf yields for a given N status was too high to have strong predictive power.  相似文献

This study evaluated the rate of sedimentation from water under various salinities, over a time period of 72 h. The particles come from soils that are commonly found in shrimp growing areas of Alabama: Black Belt Prairie, Piedmont Plateau, and Upper Coastal Plain. Different salinity treatments and settling times resulted in significant differences (P≤ 0.05) in the reduction of turbidity and TSS for each soil type. Solutions containing 2 ppt salinity had a similar rate of turbidity reduction as the solutions with 5, 10, or greater ppt treatments. Concentrations of turbidity and TSS decreased rapidly between 1 and 12 h of sedimentation; very little decline was observed during the time intervals 12–72 h. Higher salinity treatments yielded settling patterns similar to the 2 ppt salinity treatment. After 1 h, turbidity was removed by 65% in the control compared with 85% salinity treated samples. Variations in turbidity and TSS among the three sediments suggest that finer particles, the Piedmont Plateau soils, settled at a slower rate than larger particles. This difference occurs because the percentage of turbidity and TSS removed was significantly higher in mineralized waters compared to freshwater. Therefore, a small amount of salt, 2 ppt, can be used in pond aquaculture treatments to reduce the turbidity and TSS concentrations in shrimp ponds.  相似文献

The vast majority of global freshwater ecosystems are small lakes with less than 100 m2 surface area. These lakes are often unconnected to other water bodies but frequently host fish populations. Existing explanations for how fish colonize such remote habitats often involve birds as vectors transporting fish eggs as propagules. In this study, we aim to quantify the prevalence of these explanations among relevant societal groups as well as their scientific knowledge basis. We analyzed entries in online blogs and forums and surveyed the opinions of local stakeholders and decision makers using a questionnaire. To collect published scientific knowledge, we conducted a structured literature review. Our results reveal a discrepancy between commonly found beliefs and the empirical knowledge supporting those beliefs: Dispersal of fish eggs by water birds was overall the most frequent explanation online and in the questionnaire. In the scientific literature, however, we found hardly any empirical research on passive fish egg dispersal. We propose research directions for how to close this gap of knowledge and suggest that future empirical studies on passive fish egg dispersal may be inspired by existing work on passive dispersal in aquatic invertebrates. Mitigating the belief‐evidence discrepancy on fish dispersal will be essential to better understand the patterns of fish biodiversity across landscapes, to counteract its losses, and inform management strategies for invasive fish species.  相似文献

Wireless sensor networks have found multiple applications in precision viticulture. Despite the steady progress in sensing devices and wireless technologies, some of the crucial items needed to improve the usability and scalability of the networks, such as gateway infrastructures and in-field processing, have been comparatively neglected. This paper describes the hardware, communication capabilities and software architecture of an intelligent autonomous gateway, designed to provide the necessary middleware between locally deployed sensor networks and a remote location within the whole-farm concept. This solar-powered infrastructure, denoted by iPAGAT (Intelligent Precision Agriculture Gateway), runs an aggregation engine that fills a local database with environmental data gathered by a locally deployed ZigBee wireless sensor network. Aggregated data are then retrieved by external queries over the built-in data integration system. In addition, embedded communication capabilities, including Bluetooth, IEEE 802.11 and GPRS, allow local and remote users to access both gateway and remote data, as well as the Internet, and run site-specific management tools using authenticated smartphones. Field experiments provide convincing evidence that iPAGAT represents an important step forward in the development of distributed service-oriented information systems for precision viticulture applications.  相似文献

Removal of heavy metals (HM) from industrial wastewater is of primary environmental importance. The seeded ambient temperature ferrite process, in which heavy metals are removed from solution by their incorporation into a magnetite structure, is an attractive alternative for both complete metals separation and generation of stable magnetic sludge. Despite its potential, the effects of various operational parameters on the composition and stability of the final product are not fully understood to-date. The current paper addresses the combined effect of selected operational parameters on Co2+ incorporation efficiency. Co2+, which is used in many industries (e.g., plating, alloys manufacturing, catalytic converters, and paint pigments) and hence may pose a significant environment risk, was shown previously to be incorporated successfully into ferrite structures. Co2+-bearing ferrites were synthesized from Fe(II) solutions at ambient temperature (20 and 30°C), applying slow oxidation, pH 10.5, 20 g (as Fe) l?1 ferrite seed, and different Fe2+ to Co2+ influent ratios. Pure magnetite was used as an initial seed, which was gradually exchanged, as the reaction proceeded, by the Co2+-bearing ferrite generated within the reactor (until full exchange at steady state). Under all conditions investigated >99% of the Co2+ was removed from solution (yielding Co2+ levels below 20 μg/l in the effluent) while the generated precipitates were composed predominately of magnetite/ferrite (based on XRD analysis). Favorable results in terms of Co2+ incorporation efficiency and sludge stability were obtained when the following operational conditions were applied: 1:10 Co2+:Fe2+ molar influent ratio, 30°C, 1,500 mgFe2+ l?1 metal intermediate concentration, and 16 h aging period (pH 10.5).  相似文献
