AIM: To identify the contributions of stationary periods and external climatic environments to thermal stress conditions for sheep on livestock transport vehicles during journeys in summer. METHODS: Two livestock transport vehicles carrying sheep, operating under commercial conditions in New Zealand, were monitored during February and March 2002. Temperature and humidity were logged in five pens inside each vehicle, as well as externally. From these data, the temperature-humidity index (THI) was calculated. Global positioning equipment was used to log the location of the vehicle and whether it was moving or stationary. Regression analysis was used to identify factors that made a significant contribution to the THI within the vehicle. Regression models included the effects of vehicle, journey, initial ambient temperature or THI, pen position and duration of each stationary period. RESULTS: The THI in the livestock pens generally increased when vehicles were stationary. The highest THI value (95) was recorded in a vehicle on an enclosed deck of a Cook Strait ferry. Ambient conditions, the initial THI of a pen, and duration of the stationary period were all significant contributors to increases in the THI. Some increases in the THI occurred in stationary vehicles despite ambient conditions being mild, suggesting that lack of airflow was a critical factor. During stationary periods, 34% of THI readings exceeded 75, and, on average, the THI increased by 0.16 for every minute of a stationary period. CONCLUSIONS: Increases in the THI that could be detrimental to the welfare of sheep could occur on stationary sheep transport vehicles at most daytime ambient temperatures during summer. For a given stocking density and vehicle design, the THI of a pen increased in proportion to the duration of the stationary period. Mild ambient conditions (<25 degrees C) provided some protection against excessive THI increases if the duration of the stop was limited, but drivers are best advised to park their vehicles where there is airflow, and to minimise the duration of stops where possible. Livestock transport vehicles during summer should not be placed on enclosed ferry decks where airflow is absent or minimal.  相似文献

Recognizing the importance of antimicrobial resistance and the need for veterinarians to aid in efforts for maintaining the usefulness of antimicrobial drugs in animals and humans, the Board of Regents of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine charged a special committee with responsibility for drafting this position statement regarding antimicrobial drug use in veterinary medicine. The Committee believes that veterinarians are obligated to balance the well-being of animals under their care with the protection of other animals and public health. Therefore, if an animal's medical condition can be reasonably expected to improve as a result of treatment with antimicrobial drugs, and the animal is under a veterinarian's care with an appropriate veterinarian-client-patient relationship, veterinarians have an obligation to offer antimicrobial treatment as a therapeutic option. Veterinarians also have an obligation to actively promote disease prevention efforts, to treat as conservatively as possible, and to explain the potential consequences associated with antimicrobial treatment to animal owners and managers, including the possibility of promoting selection of resistant bacteria. However, the consequences of losing usefulness of an antimicrobial drug that is used as a last resort in humans or animals with resistant bacterial infections might be unacceptable from a public or population health perspective. Veterinarians could therefore face the difficult choice of treating animals with a drug that is less likely to be successful, possibly resulting in prolonged or exacerbated morbidity, to protect the good of society. The Committee recommends that voluntary actions be taken by the veterinary profession to promote conservative use of antimicrobial drugs to minimize the potential adverse effects on animal or human health. The veterinary profession must work to educate all veterinarians about issues related to conservative antimicrobial drug use and antimicrobial resistance so that each individual is better able to balance ethical obligations regarding the perceived benefit to their patients versus the perceived risk to public health. Specific means by which the veterinary profession can promote stewardship of this valuable resource are presented and discussed in this document.  相似文献

During the hog cholera (HC) eradication program in the United States, 135 field isolates were characterized by inoculation into specific-pathogen-free pigs. This gave origin to the classification of 61 (45%) as high virulent, 37 (27%) as low virulent, 29 (22%) as avirulent or immunizing, and 8 (6%) as capable of causing persistent infection. The persistent infections caused by the eight isolates were of long durtion, lasting in one instance to 152 days. The persistently infected pigs remained relatively free of clinical signs of HC but had high concentrations of HC virus (HCV) in their blood. When 6 of these pigs were given a second inoculation (with the virulent Ames strain of HCV), 2 died while the health status of 4 remained unchanged.  相似文献

Mature Charolais x Angus cows (n = 128) were adjusted to a body condition score (BCS) of 3 (1 = very thin, 3 = moderate, 5 = very fat) between 130 and 190 d of gestation. When cows averaged 190 d of gestation, they were assigned randomly to a maintenance energy diet (ME) or to a diet very low in energy (LE). Cows were allotted within these prepartum (PRP) diets to a high-energy (HE) or LE diet at parturition. At 30 d postpartum (PP), cows were allotted to four treatments: a) slaughter at 0 (n = 32) or b) 48 h after calf removal (n = 32), c) cows whose calves were early weaned at 30 d PP (n = 32) or d) normally weaned at 205 d PP (n = 32). Low energy PRP intake reduced (P less than .01) BCS, cow weight, total empty body lipid (TEBL), body energy (BE) and daily predicted maintenance energy (PME)/W.75 by parturition. Pre- and postpartum energy intake combined to affect (P less than .10) these same factors in a similar manner at 30 d PP. From 30 to 60 d PP, early weaning reduced (P less than .05) PME/W.75. Cow BCS at 190 d of gestation had little effect (P greater than .10) on PME/W.75 or PME/Mcal of BE. Body condition score at parturition, however, affected (P less than .05) delta BCS, delta BE and PME/Mcal of BE by 30 and 60 d PP, with thinner cows losing less condition and requiring more PME/Mcal of BE. Cow BCS had a similar effect from 30 to 60 d PP. Total daily PME was greater for the fat cows during both the PRP and PP periods. Body composition, PRP and PP energy intake and early weaning affect energy requirements and energetic efficiency of beef cows.  相似文献

Prenatal infection of pigs with Strongyloides ransomi occurred in 12% of 104 pigs and in 14% of 21 litters farrowed by 13 sows experimentally exposed to infective larvae as weanlings. Transmammary passage was observed in 38 of 39 litters studied. Milk samples obtained from 14 sows showed that larvae were usually shed in the colostrum within 24 hours after farrowing; however, larvae were recovered from samples of milk of sows up to 20 days after parturition. Larvae were recovered from milk samples obtained after each parturition up to the fourth. Prenatal infection in pigs was not detected after the 1st litter.  相似文献

Abstract. A model has been developed based on multiple regression which explains 95% of the variation in nitrate loading of the major rivers in the 4453 km2 Lough Neagh catchment for the years 1971–1987. The model relates loading of nitrate in the hydrological year to fertilizer usage, previous summer rainfall, summer temperature of the current year and December-May flow. It indicates that there is an increase in nitrate loading associated with fertilizer usage, and that the equivalent of 13% of nitrogen fertilizer that is lost as leachate comprises 50% of the river loadings.  相似文献

Attempts (some successful) were made to eliminate Theileria buffeli infections from 23 naturally or experimentally infected, splenectomised calves. The anti-theilerial hydroxynaphthoquinone derivative buparvaquone was used either alone or in combination with primaquine phosphate. After treatment the calves were monitored for infection for up to 26 weeks. Blood films were examined for piroplasms and serum antibody levels were measured using an immunofluorescence technique. Buparvaquone alone failed to eliminate infections. Infections were eliminated from 11 of 16 calves treated twice with buparvaquone and three or six times with primaquine phosphate. Theilerial parasites were not subsequently seen in these 11 calves nor were antibodies detected beyond the eighth week after treatment.  相似文献

Benodanil, triadimefon or triadimenol, prepared as solutions (30 g litre?1) in a mixture of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and xylene(1+ 9 by volume), or benodanil, prepared by diluting an emulsified concentrate with water, were applied to the surface of stumps produced by removing branches from apple trees. The active ingredients penetrated in fungitoxic amounts at least 6 cm below the wound surface, except when diluted benodanil e. c. was used. No such penetration occurred when the stumps were treated with acrylic paints containing the same ingredients. Triadimefon and triadimenol persisted within the wood for at least 273 days. No treatment inhibited callus formation but none appeared to enhance it. There were more saprophytic fungi in samples taken from treated than from untreated stumps, and the number of microorganisms present in the wood decreased with distance from the wound surface. Only one basidiomycete fungus was present in wood samples taken 273 days after treatments were carried out.  相似文献
